Yeah, and Fangs is still clinging to life. And whether it was Reggie or Mrs. Klump who pulled the trigger, a Northsider put him there. You took our friend, our land. And you'll take everything if we give you the chance. So now you get to watch as we burn your school to the ground.
— Sweet Pea to Archie[src]

Sweet Pea is a recurring character on The CW's Riverdale. He is portrayed by Jordan Connor.

He was a student at Southside High until it was shut down by Mayor McCoy, who deemed it as a public health hazard, claiming toxic fumes were coming from the "methamphetamine lab" in the basement. Not long after the school was shut down, he transferred to Riverdale High along with Toni TopazJughead Jones and Fangs Fogarty. He is also a member of the Southside Serpents.

Like many Southsiders, Sweet Pea appears to hold a great amount of disdain towards the Northside and those who inhabit it. However, his hatred for them seems too run deeper than most, resulting in several violent encounters with the Riverdale Bulldogs and the Red Circle. He's had repeated encounters with both Archie Andrews and Reggie Mantle, with each being just as violent, if not more than the last. He blames the Northside for the Southside's troubles, and Fangs' shooting outside of the Sheriff Station only intensified this hate as he led the younger Serpents in trashing Riverdale High during the riots.

Early Life

Not much is known about Sweet Pea's early life. It is presumed that at some point in his young life, he completed the Serpents Initiation and became a Southside Serpent. However, it's currently unclear if he met Toni Topaz, who is also a Serpent, before or after joining the gang.

Dealing with a New Serpent Member

Sweet Pea and the Serpents in the Red and Black offices

After storming out of Mr. Phillips' class in a fit of rage the previous day, Sweet Pea and two other Serpents entered the the Red and Black offices in search of Toni and Jughead, wondering if the two of them wanted to join him at the quarry. While Toni agreed to come, Jughead denied the offer, sarcastically remarking that he didn't have his "beach body" yet. Sweet Pea took great offense to Jughead's refusal to join them, concluding that they were good enough for Jughead to ask for help from, but not good enough to hang out with. He instructed Jughead not to come crawling to them when some random Ghoulie decided to earn his stripes by taking out FP Jones' kid. While Jughead appreciated what the Serpents had done for him and his father, he had no desires in joining them, which angered Sweet Pea, enough to make him attack, though Toni was there to keep the two separate and prevent the situation from escalating. She then told Sweet Pea to take the hint as Jughead just wasn't that into him.

A couple days later in the cafeteria, he and Toni were joined at the table by Jughead, who had supposedly been attacked by the Ghoulies. They exchanged looks, nodding to one another having come to an understanding.[1]

Southsiders vs Northsiders

The Serpents watching the Red Circle's video

Sweet Pea, Toni, Fangs Fogarty and several other members of the Southside Serpents watched Archie Andrews's recorded message to the Black Hood. He described Archie as being sick in the head after watching the recording. With Fogarty's urge to earn his Serpent stripes growing, Sweet Pea thought of no better task for him to earn those stripes than for him to return with Archie's head. Jughead on the other hand wasn't convinced that this was the best way to deal with the dilemma, referring to Archie as a lame target. If they sought to prove something, Jughead suggested that they go after the Black Hood, which would be counter productive from Sweet Pea's perspective. The Black Hood was solely going after Northsiders, who do nothing but blame the south side for everything that's wrong with Riverdale. The Black Hood was doing their work for them, essentially making him a hero.

Sweet Pea pulling a knife out on Archie

The following night, Sweet Pea, Fogarty, and another Serpent caught Archie tagging their territory with the Red Circle's logo. He quickly realized that it was a message for the Black Hood. Even though Archie had no intentions on antagonizing the Serpents, he achieved just that by tagging their turf. Sweet Pea insisted that Archie return to the north side before the altercation turned violent, though Archie failed to heed his warning. On that note, Sweet Pea pulled out a pocket knife. However, that would do him little good against the gun that Archie then pulled from his bag, which sent the Serpents running in the opposite direction.

Despite the fact that he retreated the last time they met face-to-face, Sweet Pea was far from done with Archie. He and his fellow Serpents unexpectedly showed up on Archie's door step the night after their previous dispute, wondering how stupid could the northsiders be to not expect retribution after Archie came into his territory and put a gun in his face. Sweet Pea would come to learn that Archie was not alone. With him was his fellow Red Circle members/team members of the Riverdale Bulldogs. The more the merrier, Sweet Pea countered.

Riverdale Rumble; Sweet Pea vs Archie

The Southside Serpents met up with the Red Circle in a vacant lot, where a brief standoff took place between the rivals, as a storm came in. Both Sweet Pea and Archie stepped towards the middle of the lot, with Archie throwing the first punch, knocking Sweet Pea to the ground. From there, chaos ensued as the respective groups began attacking one another. More concerned with his fellow Circle members than he is the fight itself, Archie became distracted, providing Sweet Pea with the opportunity to deliver a heavy hit, leveling Archie to the ground. Although, the beating did not stop there as Sweet Pea closed in on Archie to deliver a powerful kick to his abdomen, injuring him greatly. Fortunately for Archie, before Sweet Pea could follow through on one last blow, the sound of a gun shot rang throughout the lot. The fighting ceased as they each looked to Veronica, who had fired the gun in an attempt to bring an end to the rumble, which resulted in injuries on both sides.[2]

Sweet Pea and Fogarty devising a plan to blow up the Register

Sweet Pea, Fogarty, Toni and several other Serpents gathered in the courtyard outside Southside High, where they were confronted by Jughead after he had learned of the rumble that took place in the vacant lot. Sporting a black eye, Sweet Pea explained to Jughead that they didn't jump Dilton Doiley, rather a large brawl broke out, during which time he was punched by Andrews, and sustained the aforementioned black eye, just before Veronica shot a gun into the air. And to no surprise, they were hauled in by the police while the northsiders escaped unpunished. Tired of being looked at as second-class citizens in their own town, Sweet Pea and Fogarty devised a plan to blow up the Register with a pipe bomb. Jughead objected to such action. Doing so would only worsen the divide between sides, though Sweet Pea was convinced that things couldn't get any worse than they already were. Jughead wanted them to hold off on any destructive behavior, at least until he could talk with Archie. Unfortunately, Sweet Pea was sick of Jughead always wanting to talk things out. Furthermore, he didn't even know which side Jughead was on. You can't be half a Serpent, he said.

Later that evening, Jughead entered the Whyte Wyrm, wearing the Serpents jacket given to him by Tall Boy. Sweet Pea took a break from playing pool to comment that Jughead, who he referred to as a northsider, was lost. Jughead claimed that he was right where he was supposed to be, as he was done being half a Serpent. Sweet Pea took this as a desperate play on Jughead's behalf in order to protect his friends from the north side. However, Jughead insisted that he was willing to stand with them. Although, for this to happen, he would first have to survive the initiation.

Sweet Pea and the Serpents starting Jughead's initiation

First thing the next morning, before the sun had even risen, Sweet Pea, along with multiple other Serpents, entered FP's trailer, wearing green snake masks as part of the initiation process. He stood over Jughead's bed as he woke from his sleep. Sweet Pea told him that his initiation began with assuming guardianship of the Beast, otherwise know as Hot Dog, the Serpents' personal dog.

Back at the Whyte Wyrm, Sweet Pea watched as Jughead sited all six laws of being a Serpent to Tall Boy and retrieved a knife from a rattlesnake's cage. Unbeknownst to Jughead, the snake's venom glands had previously been removed.

A couple of days later, Sweet Pea, Fogarty, and the Serpents stopped by FP's trailer to proceed with Jughead's initiation when they ran into Archie, who informed Jughead of their prior altercations. Are you joining the Serpents, Archie asked Jughead. Sweet Pea replied that he'd only be one of them if he survived the initiation, which wasn't guaranteed. Archie told them that he came to deliver a message; that message being that Jughead's girlfriend, Betty, was breaking up with him. Archie claimed that just like everyone else, Betty knew that Jughead couldn't be a northsider and a southsider.

Sweet Pea's brass knuckles

That night, the Serpents formed a path around Jughead as part of his final trial, which they referred to as the gauntlet. Jughead would have to be jumped into the gang through enduring physical punishment, though he was prohibited from fight back, as this was likely a testament to his strength and resilience. Jughead walked down the Serpent formed path, they delivered blow after blow, though Jughead continued until reaching Sweet Pea, who while wearing brass knuckles, delivered a massive punch, knocking Jughead to the ground, instantly. After regaining consciousness, Jughead returned to his feet, and shook Sweet Pea's hand, finally gaining membership to the Southside Serpents.[3]

Sweet Pea being arrested

Sweet Pea, Toni, and many other members of the Serpents are taken into police custody after Mayor McCoy and Sheriff Keller raided Southside High in search of Jingle Jangle dealers. Of the Serpents, Jughead was the only known member to have escaped.

A couple days later, after being released from custody, Sweet Pea and Toni attended the drag race over Dead Man's curve, between Jughead and a Ghoulie named Malachi. Should Jughead win, the Serpents remain autonomous and the Ghoulies refrain from selling Jingle Jangle. However, should Jughead lose, the Ghoulies gain control over Sunnyside Trailer Park and the Whyte Wyrm. Unfortunately, the race didn't go as planned, as Sheriff Keller and local law enforcement intercepted the race at Herk Harvey bridge.[4]

Sweet Pea agreeing with Jughead's plan

While at the Whyte Wyrm, Sweet Pea learned from Jughead that FP's release from prison was near. The bar erupted with applause from all those in attendance for the announcement. Jughead planned to bring his father up to speed on their plans with Mayor McCoy, which would "bring the Southside back", so to speak. Unfortunately, Tall Boy wasn't pleased with Jughead's decision to sit down with the Mayor. Hoping to resolve the conflict, Jughead suggested putting the decision to a vote. If the Serpents disagreed with Jughead's decision to negotiate and compromise with the Mayor, then he would step aside, however, if they agreed, he would follow through with the plan as scheduled. Many of the Serpents within the bar raised their hands in agreement with Jughead's peaceful resolution with the Mayor, Sweet Pea and Toni included.

Sweet Pea attending FP's retirement party

A couple nights later, Sweet Pea attended FP's retirement party at the Wyrm. It was at the party that Andrews and his girlfriend performed Michael Andrews' and Gary Jules' Mad World. However, after they abruptly exited the stage, the crowd began to "boo", which Sweet Pea had a hand in. He then joyfully watched as Jughead's girlfriend, Betty, performed the "Serpent dance" in front of the entire bar. Afterward, he and his fellow Serpents celebrated as FP took the stage to announce that he was no longer retiring, and that he would continue to reign as king over the Serpents.[5]

Taking out the Snake Charmer

Every year, the Serpents gave back to the Southside of Riverdale through Toys for Tots and Meals on Wheels. It had become a Serpent tradition to look after the young and the elderly of the Southside during the holiday season. Sweet Pea took a break from wrapping gifts at the Whyte Wyrm to assist FP and Tall Boy in making a drug-run for the Snake Charmer.

The young Serpents joining together to take down the Snake Charmer

The next day, Sweet Pea, Jughead, Toni, Fogarty, and many of the other younger Serpents gathered to discuss Penny Peabody, who had forced FP into dealing drugs. Jughead revealed that before his father was released, he was responsible for making the runs. Since then, she had roped Sweet Pea and Tall Boy into trafficking her drugs. Sweet Pea wondered if Jughead's anger truly lied with the fact that he was chosen over Jughead to assist with the deliveries. However, Jughead explained that he was upset because he didn't wish for the Serpents to end up like the Ghoulies. Furthermore, Jughead doubted that any of them became Serpents merely to be at the beck and call of a drug Queenpin like Penny. The path in which the Serpents were currently headed only ended in two ways, jail or death. Which is why in the interest of self-preservation, Jughead wanted to take out Penny. However, Sweet was hesitant in joining Jughead's cause given that the Snake Charmer had helped some of them in the past. Though this admittedly came at a price. If they didn't stop Penny while they had the chance, she was going to trap every single one of them into the business of drug trafficking. The only remaining question was whether or not they were willing to risk their lives in order to save FP's. "What is the first law", Toni asked. "No Serpent stands alone", Sweet Pea replied. Acknowledging this, he stood to his feet as he and the other Serpents agreed to join Jughead in stopping the Snake Charmer.

That night, led by Jughead, the young Serpents, hidden behind snake masks, entered Penny's warehouse, placed a black hood over her head, and carried her away. They drove her out to Greendale, her new place of residence, as she had been banned from returning to Riverdale. While they didn't care where she set up shop, it wasn't going to be on the Southside or with the Serpents. If she sought to deal drugs and extort people, that would be done elsewhere. Penny laughed at them, then pulling up the sleeve of her leather jacket to reveal her Serpents tattoo, stating that Serpent law prohibited them from hurting one of their own. With that being said, it was time that she learn that her tattoo didn't make her a Serpent considering that she hadn't been honoring their ways. Sweet Pea and Toni held Penny down as Jughead pulled out a knife, and removed Penny's tattoo, which was an excruciatingly painful process.[6]

Transferring to Riverdale High

Upon learning that Southside High was being closed down due to quarantine, Sweet Pea and Fogarty kicked open the back doors of the school to inform Jughead and Toni off the terrific news. Sweet Pea was pleased to announce, that he, Fogarty, Toni and the Serpents would be transferring to Jughead's old stomping grounds, Riverdale High.

The following day, Sweet Pea, Jughead, Toni and Fangs arrived at Riverdale High, where they were welcomed by Veronica. In an effort to ease their transition to the Northside, she had set up a registration desk in the hallway for locker assignments, class schedules, and a list of sports and extracurriculars. As she encouraged each of them to drink from the cup that is "fair Riverdale, Cheryl and Reggie interrupted. With the River Vixens and Riverdale Bulldogs in tow, Cheryl approached the registration desk to hurl insults at the Serpents, referring to them as "Southside scum" and "raggamuffins". Cheryl announced that she would not standby and allow Riverdale High's above average GPA to drop because of overcrowded classrooms with underachievers such as themselves. Cheryl instructed them to find another school to deface. In doing so, she upset Toni. Just as the two were about to face off, Archie stepped in the middle, hoping to put their differences aside so that they could start over. Unfortunately, when Reggie declined Archie's offer, Sweet Pea stepped forward to finish what they had started during the rumble, though Jughead and Fangs would not allow an altercation to ensue, holding Sweet Pea back until Mr. Weatherbee arrived to send them off to class.

The Serpents being framed by Reggie

In the student lounge, Sweet Pea, Toni and Fangs became acquainted with Veronica, of the Park Avenue Lodges, Josie, formerly of Josie and the Pussycats, and Kevin, the Sheriff's son and ex-boyfriend of Joaquin DeSantos, a fellow Serpent. They were then called out into the hallway by Weatherbee, who had discovered that a Serpent had been spray painted onto the school's seal. The Serpents pleaded their innocence as they were certain that Reggie was responsible for the vandalizing act despite the fact that he claimed that the defacement of the seal was a prime example of what Serpent do best, tag their turf. Having fallen victim to Reggie's lies, Weatherbee outlawed gang behavior of any kind, including Serpent tattoos, which were to be hidden, and jackets, effective immediately. Possession of any gang paraphernalia would lead to immediate suspension.

At the Whyte Wyrm after school, Sweet Pea played arcade games and Toni had a drink as Jughead expressed his frustration with Weatherbee, claiming that they were being profiled. He was already telling them what to wear. Jughead began to worry what might follow, possibly brain implants that can control what they think. Toni told him to calm down as he sounded like a conspiracy nut. Sweet Pea and Toni went on to explain that with the closing of Southside High, they were now attending a better school with a computer lab, text books, and fully functioning toilets. As far as Sweet Pea and Toni were concerned, getting transferred to Riverdale High was the best thing that could've happened to them. If it meant that they had to take off their Serpent jackets from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday, then so be it.

Jughead getting suspended while Reggie, Fangs, Toni and Sweet Pea are given a week of detention

While in the student lounge, the following day, Sweet Pea, Toni and Fangs were shocked to discover that Jughead had returned to school while wearing his Serpent jacket even though such attire had been banned. In the lounge, along with them, was Reggie and the Bulldogs, who weren't too pleased to see that Jughead was still wearing his jacket. When Reggie demanded that Jughead remove it, he declined, telling Reggie that he couldn't comply and that Reggie wouldn't understand why he couldn't because he had no sense of honor, history, or loyalty. This angered Reggie to the point where he became physical, forcefully trying to tear Jughead's jacket from his body. Without hesitation, Sweet Pea and Fogarty came to Jughead's aid, resulting in a rumble in the center of the lounge between the Serpents and Bulldogs. As a result, they were each given a week of detention by Weatherbee, who then looked to Jughead, who still wore his jacket proudly. Weatherbee demanded that Jughead take it off. Should he refuse, he would be suspended. With that being the case, Jughead decided that he would rather miss school than to conform to Weatherbee's rules.

Toni and Sweet Pea in uniform

The next day, Sweet Pea and Toni were issued standard uniform (navy blue collar shirts and khaki pants) by Weatherbee, who claimed to understand that not every Southside student had the means to purchase Riverdale High acceptable clothing. The uniform would supposedly help them fit in. As for Fogarty, he was suspended after refusing to wear the uniform. Essentially, their choices were conform or be cast out.

Sweet Pea, Toni, Fogarty and the other Southsiders were welcomed to the inaugural meeting of the "Swords and Serpents" club by Jughead. Officially, they are a gaming group sanctioned by Mr. Weatherbee, where like minded students can meet to concoct world building, role playing scenarios, inhabiting fantastical heroes, and dispatching mythological creatures. Unofficially, it's a safe haven-like club for them to be Serpents during school hours. Jughead refused to allow them to shed their skin, rather they would simply lying low in the tall grass.[7]

One week had passed since his transfer to Riverdale High, following the closing of Southside High. In that time, Sweet Pea was becoming adjusted to his new environment, which included playing basketball in the gym with Fogarty, Archie, Reggie and several of their classmates. With the ball in hand, he knocked Reggie to the ground on his way down the court.

Fogarty, Toni and Sweet Pea at Pickens Day

In the days following, Sweet Pea, Fogarty, Toni, Jughead and the Serpents were led by Toni's grandfather and one of the founding Southside Serpents members Thomas Topaz in crashing the Northside's annual celebration of Pickens Day. They marched into the park with duct-tape over their mouths while holding signs that demanded their land be honored. Sweet Pea and Fogarty stood at Toni's side as the three of them interrupted Veronica and the Pussycats' performance to announce that they represented the dead and the silenced. Pickens Day was a lie. General Pickens slaughtered the Uktena tribe, Toni's grandfather's family. And that land in which they were standing on, would soon give way to a new Southside, which was stolen from them. While the Serpents couldn't bring them back, they could at the very least honor them. Hoping to ease the scene, Hiram Lodge got on stage to applaud the Serpents for standing up for justice, though his actions were far from sincere.[8]

Sweet Pea, Toni, and Jughead confronting Tall Boy

Following the desecration of General Pickens' statue, Sheriff Keller head down to the Sunnyside Trailer Park to issue two week eviction notices of all its residence. He was merely the messenger as the order came down from the Mayor's office. Apparently, there was a lot of back rent owed at the trailer park though the Serpents knew that the sudden evictions had little to do with back rent. At the Whyte Wyrm, Sweet Pea, Toni, Jughead and the Serpents watched FP from the stage as he declared that none of them would be going anywhere. The heat had been on them since Pickens Day and the Mayor was using the decapitated statue of General Pickens as an excuse to turn up the heat. But if they were going to solve their dilemma, FP had to ask if anyone in the bar was responsible for cutting off the statue's head. Tall Boy suggested that FP ask Jughead what he had to say since he wrote the article that started it all. And he and his posse (Sweet Pea, Toni and Fogarty) only made it worst by firing the first shot at Pickens Day. Tall Boy suspected that maybe they went back with a ladder and hacksaw to take the head. Enraged by Tall Boy's accusations, Jughead confronted him, though FP managed to keep the tension from boiling over.

The Serpents gathered around Penny

The following day, the Snake Charmer returned to the bar after being brought back in by Tall Boy who requested her legal help with the two week eviction notices at Sunnyside. Sweet Pea, Toni and the Serpents gathered around Penny as she told them how Jughead sliced a chunk out of her arm where her Serpent tattoo used to be and how he left her bleeding in a ditch in Greendale. Nonetheless, the Snake Charmer was still willing to help the Serpents. While the eviction notices that Tall Boy had shown her were legitimate, she could think of a number of ways that would stall the process by years. Her price, however, was blood for blood; an eye for an eye. She not only wanted her membership with the Serpents reinstated, but she wanted Jughead to be kicked out in her place. Lastly, as her final demand in exchange for her services, she wanted to carve off Jughead's tattoo with a "dirty knife".

The Serpents voting for Tall Boy to be exiled

With that being said, the Serpents decided that they would put it to a vote. So a couple days later, at the Whyte Wyrm, as they were determining whether or not Jughead would remain a Serpent, Jughead, FP and Betty entered the bar with General Pickens' head in hand. FP demanded that they stop the vote in light of recent events. They sat Tall Boy down to ask him what he was doing at the dump last week. They had discovered that it was in fact Tall Boy who cut the head off the Pickens statue and dumped it at the junkyard. Tall Boy revealed that he stole the head because he was tired of seeing the Serpents go soft under FP's rule. Hiram Lodge came by, wanting to stir up trouble. He told Tall Boy that if he took the head, he'd get Mayor McCoy and the cops to swarm all over them, causing chaos in the process. Tall Boy helped Hiram Lodge start a mutiny, and Jughead wanted to know why. Tall Boy did so in an attempt to get rid of Jughead and FP, leaving the Serpents under the leadership of him and Penny. In doing this, Tall Boy betrayed his own kind and broke Serpent law. His punishment was being stripped of his jacket and exiled.[9]

Swords and Serpents meeting

During a meeting of the Swords and Serpents, the demolition of Southside High was brought to their attention and addressed by Jughead. While they had already said their goodbyes to Southside High, Jughead was convinced that this was the beginning of the end. He imagined that the school was only first to fall and that others would follow, like the Whyte Wyrm. Everything that made the Southside home for them was going to disappear if they continued to do nothing. Southside High was the soul of the Southside. The Uktena fought and died trying to protect the land. Their parents fought to keep it safe during the riots. Now, it was their turn to protect it. Jughead was ready to go to war. As was Sweet Pea, Fangs and the others. And so, later that night, the Serpents chained themselves to Southside High with no intent on leaving.

The Serpents' protest continued on for another day or so. And with the demolition just a day away, the Serpents were joined outside Southside High by a crowd of Southsiders, all demanding that the school be reopened. Unfortunately, their peaceful protest was interrupted by the wrestling team, who were led by Archie with bolt cutters. Although the Serpents had no intentions of fighting, all around them were residents of Riverdale with their phones out, recording the display. While it may have taken a couple days, people now knew what Hiram Lodge was doing. So no matter what happened, they would continue to fight. With that being said, Archie and the wrestling team cut their chains off of them one-by-one, and escorted them of the premises.[10]

At the school hall meeting, while Jughead, Betty, Archie, Veronica, Reggie and Josie squared off, Sweet Pea and Fogarty expressed their concern about the Southsiders and their treatment since being transferred to Riverdale High. Sweet Pea negating the Serpents' vote

The next day, the Serpents came together for a meeting of the Swords and Serpents. There, Sweet Pea criticized Jughead for going back on his promise of going to war with the Lodges, and instead running for student body president. Jughead explained that they needed those votes because it was the only way to affect change. Whoever was elected got a seat on the school board, giving them access to the inside which meant they couldn't be silenced. However, Sweet Pea and Fogarty were still untrusting of Betty who they predicted would bail on them just as her mother did. Her legacy was Betty's legacy as far as they were concerned, making her an enemy of the Serpent state. They had grown tired of the shots Alice had been taking at the Serpents for years from the Register. Even blaming them for crimes they did not commit. Jughead running alongside a traitor's daughter was a slap in the face. For that reason alone, he would not be getting the Serpent vote.

The Serpents coming to help Betty

Two days later, Sweet Pea, Fangs, and the young Serpents rallied around Jughead after learning from him that Betty and her mother were being blackmailed and harassed by Darla and Marcel, the manager of the hostel that Chic used to stay at in Centerville. They were demanding $10,000. So the Serpents kicked in the Coopers' front door and threatened Darla and Marcel with knives, demanding that they leave or else the situation would get much worse. Darla and Marcel headed their warning, took the money, and left.

The next day, the young Serpents were personally thanked by Alice for intervening the day before when her family was in trouble. She went on to say that she was done attacking and disavowing the Southside. It was where she was from and she should be proud of that.[11]

The town gathers for Midge's funeral to pay respect. Cheryl sings a song in Midge's honor. She and the rest of the River Vixens are dressed in all-black cheerleader uniform. At a meeting of the Swords & Serpents, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Toni and the other Serpents learn that their old adversaries, the Ghoulies, have been released from Shankshaw Prison. Jughead informs them that word on the street is that they want Serpent blood. They want war. Their meeting is interrupted by Reggie, Archie, Kevin, Moose and the rest of the Bulldogs. They've come for answers to who was hooking up with Midge. Reggie immediately points his finger at Sweet Pea, who does not take the allegation lightly. He claims that while he didn't know Midge, he completely understands why she wouldn't want flees from the mangy Bulldogs. Reggie is angered by Sweet Pea's insult and pushes him. This nearly leads to a fight. Thankfully, Archie and Jughead are there to keep their respective sides at bay.

The Serpents gather at the Sheriff Station to try to find a way to get Fangs out safely as an angry mob has formed just outside. Jughead tells Sheriff Minetta that the can't take Fangs out front and that they should take the side exit. However, a crowd has formed out there as well, meaning the station is surrounded. Jughead, Toni, Sweet Pea and Fangs are left to wonder what move they have left to make. Fangs begins to panic as he doesn't wish to die. Jughead assures him that he won't. They'll stand together so that none of them fall. Together, they recite that "In unity, there is strength". Jughead, Toni and Sweet Pea shield Fangs from the crowd as they escort him out. FP joins them, though the crowd is massive. Archie arrives at the station just as they're making their way through the crowd. As does Reggie. However, he has a gun and he's come to see to it that Fangs doesn't get away with Midge's murder. Archie spots the gun and before Reggie can use it, Archie tackles him to the ground. They fight on the ground over the gun, which unintentionally goes off, shooting Fangs in the abdomen. FP, Jughead, Sweet Pea and Toni tends to Fangs as he lays on the ground bleeding. While Jughead yells out for help, Sweet Pea looks to Archie and Reggie as his hate for them builds. A fight then erupts within the crowd.[13]

Sweet Pea and the Serpents trash the school

Sweet Pea leads the Serpents in their attack on the school, slashing up the school's poster as he comes down the steps. Archie, Kevin and Moose round the corner, demanding that they stop immediately. Sweet Pea turns his attentions towards the three of them, stating that they've found some Bulldogs to put down. As he approaches, Archie swears to him that Reggie didn't shoot Fangs. He says it was Mrs. Klump, but Sweet Pea isn't buying it considering that he saw Reggie with a gun outside the station. However, as Archie points out, Sweet Pea also saw Archie tackle Reggie before he could pull the trigger. Nonetheless, whether it was Reggie or Midge's mom who shot Fangs, a Northsider put him in the hospital, where he is hanging on for dear life. Northsiders took his friend and his land. And they'll take everything if the Souhtsiders give them the chance. So now, Archie, Moose, and Kevin get to watch as the Serpents burn the school to the ground. Sweet Pea then throws a trashcan into the display case, shattering the glass. Armed with nothing more than bats and sticks, Archie, Moose and Kevin prepare to fight off the Serpents. Fortunately for them, Mr. Weatherbee storms into the school, with backup and a baseball bat of his own, to see to the end of the confrontation.

Sweet Pea vs Jughead

At the Whyte Wyrm, Sweet Pea and Jughead disagree on how best to handle the Ghoulies. While Sweet Pea wishes to take the fight to them, Jughead would rather they stay back at the bar. He assures Sweet Pea that the Ghoulies will be dealt with, but only when FP returns. Sweet Pea questions if Jughead no longer leads the younger Serpents. He then accuses Jughead of getting Fangs shot, which he may not recover from. To make matters worse, the Ghoulies are back and out for Serpent blood because of a drag race Jughead started. Jughead asks for an hour before they make any further decisions. And so Sweet Pea stands down.

The Serpents vote to go to war with the Ghoulies

After Jughead retrieved Toni from the Snake Charmer, Malachai and the Ghoulies, the Serpents gather to discuss Penny's offer. Sweet Pea wants to end the Ghoulies along with Penny. However, Jughead would rather they avoid going to war with the Ghoulies, especially over territory that they don't even control anymore. Jughead explains that this is Hiram Lodge's problem. Toni speaks out against Jughead's notion to just give up the Southside, Sunnyside Trailer Park included. Jughead explains that they will die in a fight against the Ghoulies. While it may be a suicide run, Sweet Pea would rather that than a coward's death. FP arrives and brings an end to the back and forth. He just got a call from the sheriff's office that Fangs in dead. They will mourn his death, but first they will honor him. So, FP wants to put Penny's offer to a vote. Jughead is the only Serpent against going to war with the Ghoulies. The rest of the Serpents and Cheryl are for going to war, as they raise their hands and bend their fingers to simulate snake fangs.

Sweet Pea, Toni, Archie, Betty, and Cheryl arrive at Jughead's old hangout where he sacrificed himself to Penny and the Ghoulies in order to save everyone else. FP comes out of the woods holding a lifeless Jughead in his arms. He has been beaten bloody and senseless, and his Serpent tattoo removed. Sweet Pea, Toni, Archie, Betty, Cheryl, and FP are speechless.[14]

Sweet Pea's to blame for the Southsiders being kicked out

When Jughead calls a meeting of the Sword & Serpents, Sweet Pea and Toni are the only Serpents left to attend. He called the meeting to discuss the memo that was sent out by Mr. Weatherbee, which claims that Riverdale High is overcrowded, resulting in the transfer of all Southside High students to Seaside High, which is two hours away, meaning Weatherbee blames the Southsiders for trashing the school during riot night. To be fair, Sweet Pea and the Serpents did in fact trash the school. Realizing that it is his fault, Sweet Pea looks to Jughead for their next move. However, Jughead doesn't know if they even have a move. They can't keep fighting for a gang that no longer exists i.e. the Serpents. Toni asks what will come of her and Sweet Pea, along with all the other Serpents at the Whyte Wyrm. However, Jughead had no knowledge of any Serpents at the Wyrm.

Sweet Pea, Toni and Jughead arrive at the Wyrm. Jughead is disgusted to see what has come of the Serpents, sleeping on the old sofas and eating out of cans. They're almost unrecognizable. The Ghoulies destroyed most of Sunnyside, and a lot of Serpents couldn't afford to leave Riverdale, so they came to the Wrym. Jughead asks if his dad knows about this, which he does.

The Serpents prepare to leave the Wyrm

The next day, Archie, Jughead and Cheryl arrive at the Wyrm to coordinate with Sweet Pea, Toni and the other Serpents after learning that Sheriff Minetta is planning to raid the Wyrm. Jughead tells them to only take the necessities and what they can carry with them. They need to move quickly and quietly. Sheriff Minetta's forces are all over the Southside and they're looking for Serpent blood. If they want their skulls to remain uncracked, they have to go undetected, Jughead states. When Sweet Pea questions where they are headed as there is no place safe for them, Jughead informs them that they've been offered asylum on the Northside. Sweet Pea, Archie, Jughead, Cheryl, Toni, and the Serpents exit the Wyrm. They creep throughout the quiet streets of Riverdale, avoiding police detection.

The Northside and the Southside untie against Weatherbee

The asylum on the Northside that Jughead spoke of turns out to be the Andrews house, as Fred Andrews feeds the Serpents the following morning. Sweet Pea then joins the rest of his classmates at school, where they all come together in a show support of the Southside students who are being wrongly transferred. Sweet Pea, Toni, Jughead, Archie, Josie, Veronica, Reggie, Cheryl, Moose, Kevin and many other students put on Serpent jackets and confront principal Weatherbee. Archie explains that everyone is ready to walk out. Mr. Weatherbee threatens to expel any student that does, though Archie calls his bluff. He knows that Weatherbee is a good man who doesn't discriminate, and if he isn't, Archie tells Weatherbee to expel him as he doesn't wish to be a part of that. With that being said, Weatherbee tells everyone to get to class.

Both the mayoral election and student body election are held in the gymnasium of Riverdale High. Among the voters are Sweet Pea, Josie, Pop Tate, Weatherbee, Moose, Veronica, Reggie and many others.

Sweet Pea, Toni, Jughead, Archie, Veronica, Cheryl, Reggie, Kevin and Moose are in the student lounge when Mr. Weatherbee announces that the student council election votes are in. The new student body president of Riverdale High is Archie Andrews. The entire student body applauds his election. In unrelated news, Weatherbee also announces that for the foreseeable future, all former Southside High students will remain at Riverdale High. The entire student body applauds once more in celebration.

Fangs and Sweet Pea at Serpent meeting

Later that evening, FP calls for a meeting of the Serpents by the lake side. Sweet Pea, Jughead, Fangs, Toni and Cheryl are all in attendance. Along with all the remaining Serpents. More than 60 years ago, the very first Serpent meeting took place on the very same riverbanks in which they stand, FP explains. So it seems fitting that this is where they gather for FP's goodbye. He calls Jughead up onstage to announce that he's retiring from the Serpents, but that Jughead will take his place considering that he's never stopped fighting for the Serpents and almost died for them. Jughead tells FP that he loves him and that the Serpents won't die out while under his leadership. As his first official duty as Serpent King, Jughead is to grant Cheryl membership into the Serpents. He even gifts her with a custom red Serpent jacket. Cheryl puts on the jacket and is welcomed with open arms into the Serpents.

The following day, Sweet Pea and Fangs watch from the stands as Archie prepares to be inaugurated in the school gymnasium. However, the event goes awry when Sheriff Minetta and two deputies enter the gym to arrest Archie for the murder of Shadow Lake resident, Cassidy Bullick.[15]

Josie and Sweet Pea at Archie's trial

Three months have passed since that fateful evening in the school gymnasium where Archie was framed by Hiram Lodge and arrested for the murder of Cassidy Bullock. Archie's trial is now in session. Sweet Pea sits in court with Josie as the trial unfolds. Archie is being prosecuted by District Attorney, Ms. Wright. She attempts to paint Archie as a bad person in her closing argument as Mary, Archie's counsel, attempts to shed light on all the good deeds Archie has done, such as helping solve the murder of Jason Blossom, providing the Southside Serpents with refuge as they hid from the police, and punching through a layer of ice in order to save Cheryl from drowning. With that in mind, Mary takes the opportunity to remind the jury that there were no witnesses, murder weapon or motive to the killing of Cassidy Bullock. After hearing from both the prosecution and the defense, the jury begins to deliberate.

The Judge calls everyone back in to reveal that the jury is still deliberating, but he's also dismissed them for the evening. They're sequestered and he's instructed them not to read anything about this case, nor to discuss it with anyone. They'll reconvene all Tuesday morning after Labor Day. With that being said, the Judge advises Archie to spend the weekend with his family and loved ones.

Sweet Pea, Jughead and Fangs investigate the Hiram Lodge

While they know that Hiram Lodge has taken over the south side as he's been colluding with the Ghoulies, Sweet Pea, Fangs and Jughead set out to figure out what exactly Hiram is up to. Jughead orders Fangs to find the Ghoulies' new lair. Jughead tells him not to engage if he sees them as this is just a recon mission, and they can't risk another gang war. They only need a confirmation of whatever Hiram's up to, that it has nothing to do with the Serpents or Riverdale High.

He's excited for school to start back up, mostly because he'll get to see Josie in the hall every day. However, Josie has other plans in mind. She told him when they started this that their summer fling was going be just that. A fling. With a three-month expiration date. Sweet Pea is very much aware, but he doesn't want the good times to end, caressing Josie's upper thigh as he hopes that she'll reconsider. Josie admits that she has enjoyed their time spent together. Nevertheless, not even he is going to distract her from her music. They then proceed to kiss.

The young Serpents plot to rescue Hot Dog

Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, Cheryl, Toni and Betty rally together and plot to invade Ghoulies territory after learning that they have Hot Dog. Fangs suspects that the Ghoulies snatched him on riot night. He looked very skinny. Fangs doubts they're feeding him enough. Fangs doubts they're feeding him enough. Given the savage nature of Ghoulies, Sweet Pea believes that they're lucky the Ghoulies aren't eating Hot Dog. So they look to Jughead for their next move. They'd be going behind enemy lines, outnumbered, open to attack from all directions and risking another gang-war. However, no Serpent left behind. That includes their spirit animal. They're going to deploy after dark. It's going to be a quick stealth mission. Betty reminds Jughead that the last time he went into Ghoulie territory, he was beaten to within an inch of his life. However, he'll have backup this time. With that being said, Betty wants to come along. The Serpent Queen is a warrior queen. So if Jughead's on the frontlines, then so is she.

The young Serpents steak out the Ghoulies' lair, where they are holding Hot Dog. Jughead instructs everyone to be lookouts as he goes to retrieve Hot Dog. Armed with a set of bolt cutters, Jughead cuts Hot Dog's chain. Immediately after doing so, he is surrounded by Penny, Malachai and the Ghoulies. As it turns out, taking Hot Dog was merely a ploy to get Jughead to come to her. Penny wants to talk about him trying to get into their business. Penny warns him to back off unless he wants to replay riot night, where they almost killed him. Penny also wants his jacket as it says "South Side Serpents" despite the fact that the south side no longer belongs to the Serpents. Penny had heard about Betty joining the Serpents and contemplates going after her next. With that in mind, Jughead agrees to give up the jacket so long as the Ghoulies stay out of the north side. As Malachai approaches Jughead, he is shot in the shoulder with an arrow by Cheryl, much to Jughead's dismay. When Penny orders the others to just kill the young Serpents, Jughead orders Cheryl to aim her next arrow at Penny, forcing Penny to call off her men. She lets Jughead go, but not before telling him that he just made the north side fair game.

Labor Day weekend is over and Archie's trial is now in session. Sweet Pea, as well as the rest of Archie's friends and family are in attendance. However, the jury could not reach a verdict. They're deadlocked. Six-to-six. With that, the jury is dismissed. In lieu of another trial, the State is prepared to offer a deal for a lesser sentence. Instead of prison, time served plus two years in juvenile detention, if Archie will plead guilty to the crime of manslaughter. Archie takes the deal and in arrested.[16]

Sweet Pea attends the grand opening of Veronica's speakeasy, La Bonne Nuit, along with Fangs. They cheer Josie on as she performs on stage.[17]

Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, Toni and Cheryl begin playing Gryphons and Gargoyles in Dilton's bunker. They are eventually joined by Betty, who questions what Jughead is doing but he is clearly too far gone, rambling on about having it all figured out and beating the Gargoyle King.[18]

Sweet Pea and Fangs want to take the game off board

Toni and Cheryl barge into the trailer as Jughead struggles to come up with their latest quest. They inform him that Sweet Pea and Fangs are off the deep-end and managed to get into the arsenal, from where they took Cheryl’s bow and arrows. Fangs launches a projectile into the air and Sweet Pea shoots it down. They are then confronted by Toni, Cheryl and Jughead. Toni and Cheryl were having a rendezvous in the tent when an arrow shot by Sweet Pea and Fangs went right through it. Sweet Pea and Fangs explain that they were practicing their aim for the next quest as they now want to go off board and take G&G into the real world. While other groups may be doing it, Jughead has no desire to and what he says goes as he is the Game Master. Jughead is already the Serpent King, Sweet Pea asks if that isn’t already enough. He and Fangs are foot soldiers in life and now they have to be the same in the game. Jughead has no desire to go back and forth with Sweet Pea, so he instructs Cheryl to grab her bow and notch an arrow. Jughead then proceeds to place an empty can on his head and tells her to fire, which she does, hitting the can dead center. Jughead then tells Sweet Pea that if he has something to prove, he can get against the tree and let Cheryl shoot a can off his head. However, Sweet Pea opts not to. Jughead explains one last time that he’s Game Master, meaning it’s his game and his rules.

Jughead exits his trailer to find Sweet Pea, Fangs, Toni and Cheryl sitting around a fire. He tells them that they will return to Eldervair tomorrow.

Everyone makes a pact to keep Archie's whereabouts a secret

After Betty, Veronica, Josie, Kevin and Reggie arrive at Dilton’s bunker to regroup with the others, Toni patches Archie up and tells him not to make any sudden movements. Archie reveals that it was Joaquin who stabbed him though Archie thinks the Warden made him do it. He then asks where are they, to which Betty explains Dilton’s bunker. The only people who know about it are in the room and it is the safest place in Riverdale. Veronica then notices the branding on Archie’s side, courtesy of Warden Norton. Sweet Pea, Fangs, Toni, Cheryl, Jughead and Betty seem particularly intrigued by the brand. Veronica then calls for everyone’s attention to announce someone needs to stay with Archie at all times. Betty and Jughead volunteer to take the first shift. Equally important, Veronica announces that everyone in the room, herself, Betty, Jughead, Cheryl, Toni, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Josie, Reggie and Kevin, are all part of a pact. From this moment on, no one is to know where the bunker is. No one was involved with the breakout and no one knows where Archie is. They are all expected to take this to the grave.[19]

Fangs and Sweet Pea tasked with finding Joaquin

At Sunnyside Trailer Park, Sweet Pea and Fangs inform Jughead that Sheriff Minetta is trashing tent city in search of Archie. Much like the manhunt for Archie, Jughead orders every Serpent to be on the lookout for Joaquin. Serpents just don’t shiv other Serpents, Sweet Pea remarks. However, according to Archie, Joaquin did it because of Warden Norton, and when the Warden confronted Betty, he called Archie the Red Paladin. Plus, the Warden poisoned himself with cyanide and blueberry fresh-aid. Not to mention he worked at Riverdale High before the detention center. The question they must now ask is if he was playing G&G with someone or for someone. And since he’s dead, Joaquin is the only one who can know the answer. Jughead warns Sweet Pea and Fangs that Joaquin may not be alone, as he suspect that Joaquin’s one of the Gargoyle King’s disciples.

Fangs and Sweet Pea catch Joaquin

Sweet Pea and Fangs have captured Joaquin. They’ve tied him up and in the process of doing so discovered a gargoyle mask on his person, meaning he is one of the Gargoyle King’s disciples. Jughead has a lot of questions, but he starts with why Joaquin shivved Archie instead of protecting him. The Warden said Joaquin had no other choice. Joaquin explains that in juvie, you’ll do anything to survive, even if that means being the Warden’s pawn. However, in some ways, the Warden was a pawn too. Joaquin saw him with game cards that told him what to do. Whoever sent the cards wanted Archie dead. From the moment he was locked up, he was marked. Jughead asks if by marked, Joaquin is referring to the symbol that Warden Norton branded on Archie’s hip. However, Joaquin is not. He reveals the brand in which Jughead is referring to means sacrifice. It means that Archie had to die. Joaquin is seemingly under the impression that Archie died. Jughead informs him this is not the case. When Jughead asks who was giving the Warden his orders, Joaquin refuses to answer. Jughead pulls out his knife as Sweet Pea and Fangs hold Joaquin up. They threaten him. With no other choice, Joaquin tells Jughead that he saw Warden Norton meet with him once. Joaquin says that Jughead knows him. The man in the black suit, he says.

Fangs, Sweet Pea, Cheryl, and Toni at the Serpent meeting

Jughead calls a meeting of the Serpents at Sunnyside Trailer Park after it came to his attention that at least one of them has been selling Fizzle Rocks, which is not what Serpents do. Sweet Pea, Fangs, Cheryl, and Toni are in attendance, among others. Starting that moment, there will be no selling or doing of drugs. And no crime of any kind will be tolerated. Anyone that breaks the Serpent code will be exiled permanently. Cheryl, for one, is outraged. She calls into question Jughead's latest decision. He vanished for a month, only to return to lecture them about responsibilities. Also unreleased by Jughead’s decree is Fangs. With no money coming in, he wonders what they’re supposed to do to survive. FP replies that they’ll figure it out, but in the mean time, he recites Serpent law #6 — "In unity there is strength."

The Serpents cheer in excitement. However, Jughead’s also gathered them for less celebratory reasons. Jughead calls Cheryl and Toni up as they burglarized the Pembrooke. More than that, Cheryl left her calling card, attaching herself and by extension all the Serpents to her crime. However, Cheryl isn’t afraid of Hiram. Nevertheless, she broke the code, and so Jughead demands that both Cheryl and Toni turn in their jackets. Toni can’t believe this is happening, reminding Jughead that she is a Serpent by blood and that this isn’t something he can take from her.

Cheryl then calls Jughead out on being a hypocrite, having learned that Fangs was selling Fizzle Rocks and that Jughead gave him a pass. They know because Fangs told Sweet Pea, who told Toni, who told Cheryl. She adds that since Jughead is asking for her and Toni jackets, he should be asking for Fangs’ as well. In fairness, Jughead does just that, which Sweet Pea does no respond well to, grabbing Jughead. Fangs tells Sweet Pea to relax and angrily hands over his jacket. Sweet Pea attempts to follow Fangs but FP stops him. Jughead then turns his attention towards Cheryl and Toni, who agree to leave but refuse to give up their jackets, which is fine by Jughead, but he also asks that Cheryl give him the egg back or else Veronica won’t agree to the protection contract. Jughead explains that he believes that Cheryl still has honor, and it's getting cold out. And unlike Cheryl, the rest of them don’t get to go back to Thistlehouse.

As they head towards the back of the truck to trash the cargo, the Serpents attack, jumping out he back of the truck with weapons in hand. One Gargoyle is knocked to the ground as the others flee. Sweet Pea and FP hold him up as Jughead uses him to send a message to Hiram. He informs the Gargoyle that Veronica is now under the protection of the Serpents and that Riverdale has not fallen. The Serpents then proceed to let the Gargoyle go to deliver the message.

Sweet Pea, Jughead, and FP meet with Fangs in the woods. They’d talked it over and want to give him a shot at redemption. Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, and FP take Tall Boy to the bunker, where they tie him to a chair and torture him for answers as they were all under the impression that he was dead. FP asks where he’s been hiding. Tall Boy replies that he’s been held up in a small town called Athens. When Tall Boy reveals that it was him who broke into Betty’s house, Jughead punches him in the face. They know that he’s been working for Hiram, parading around in the Gargoyle King costume. Simply to gain a reaction, Tall Boy goes onto reveal that he took great pleasure in carving that symbol into Joaquin’s head after killing him, which deeply angers Fangs and Sweet Pea, though Jughead and FP hold them at bay. However, Jughead isn’t willing to do so much longer, threatening to turn Sweet Pea and Fangs loose should Tall Boy refuse to help them get to Hiram. Tall Boy explains that Hiram would never agree to meet with him, not unless he had something that he really wanted.

Fangs and Sweet Pea force Tall Boy to call Hiram

Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, Archie, and FP hold Tall Boy at gun point and force him to make contact with Hiram. During which time, Tall Boy claims to have captured Archie. They schedule for Hiram to pick Archie up at the usual meeting place at 9 PM.

Jughead returns to the bunker to find Tall Boy dead and Sweet Pea and Fangs in a panicked state. Fangs explains that Tall Boy tried to escape and he accidentally shot him. And now they don’t know what to do. Jughead tells them both to shut up long enough for him to think. He comes up with an idea to throw a party.

Jughead eases Sweet Pea and Fangs' worry

As planned, Jughead, Sweet Pea, and Fangs throw a party at Sunnyside Trailer Park for the Serpents. Jughead instructs them to remain composed. As far as anyone knows, Tall Boy was exiled. Jughead then makes an announcement as they have a lot to celebrate. They finally unmasked the Gargoyle King and Hiram Lodge is down for the count. Lastly, they’re welcoming back one of their own, Fangs. Their celebratory partying is interrupted by the sound of police sirens sounding. Again, Sweet Pea and Fangs become concerned. However, much to their surprise the law enforcer is actually FP, who has been appointed the new sheriff of Riverdale.[22]

Fangs, Jughead, and Sweet Pa lie to FP

Sweet Pea, Fangs, and Jughead are hiding Tall Boy’s death from FP. Unbeknownst to him, Tall Boy’s body lays under the bed as Sweet Pea, Fangs, and Jughead fabricate a story, claiming that they drove Tall Boy to a bus station at gunpoint and forced him out of town. However, FP isn’t buying it considering Tall Boy murdered Joaquin. However, the boys stick to their stories. And with FP’s hands already full in search of Hiram’s would-be assassin, he lets it go, at least for the time being.

Sweet Pea and Fangs calls Jughead back into the bunker to inform him that the Gargoyle Gang is riled up and looking for Tall Boy. And as long as his body is in the bunker, they’re all in danger. Unfortunately, it’s too risky to move him at the moment. Jughead orders Fangs to stay back with Tall Boy and lock the bunker down as he’ll need Sweet Pea to tail Hermione Lodge.

Sweet Pea and Jughead discover that Minetta is alive

Sweet Pea calls Jughead after following Hermione Lodge as asked of him. Jughead meets Sweet Pea in the woods, just outside an old cabin. Just inside is Hermione, who is having an affair with Minetta, who was previously thought to be dead. From what Sweet Pea’s gathered, he and Hermione have been together for months. Just inside, Hermione informs Minetta that too many people are asking questions, which means that their problem, that being Hiram, needs to be taken out. She wants Minetta to use his old Sheriff’s gun. Then all signs will point to FP. Back outside the cabin, Jughead runs off to warn his dad as Sweet Pea stays behind to gather more intel.[23]

Sweet Pea blows Josie off

Sweet Pea receives a surprise visit from Josie. She enters his trailer to invite him to her mother’s wedding, though he mistakes her unexpected arrival as a booty call as it wouldn’t be the first one they’ve had since their summer fling ended. However, this is not the case. Josie was hoping that Sweet Pea would be her date to the wedding. He hopes this means that they’re officially together, but Josie would rather it not be so official. Admittedly, Sweet Pea likes her and would be all in with her without a second thought, but he’s not built for her to just slide back into his life whenever she doesn’t want to be alone.[24]

The Swords and Serpents calls for a meeting only to find that their numbers have greatly depleted. Sweet Pea and Fangs inform Jughead that they’re down another eight members. All girls. They’ve all deceived to join Toni and Cheryl’s gang, the Pretty Poisons. Jughead orders everyone to fallback as it is his duty to make things right considering that this is only happening because he exiled Cheryl and Toni. Jughead believes that if he can talk to Toni and get her back into the Serpent fold, then the others will follow.

Eventually, the Serpents' cut will become minuscule. They need numbers and Gladys knows for a fact that the Ghoulies are up for grab. They’ve been leaderless ever since she took care of Penny. Gladys tells Jughead to recruit them, though he is reluctant given their past. But if Jughead wishes to see the Serpents continue on, then he’ll have to do as told by hid mother and tame the Ghoulies.[25]

Sweet pea, Jughead, and Fangs recite Serpent laws

Jughead calls a Serpent meeting to ask about the break-in of the Chemistry lab. Kurtz admits that he did it though as a quest, stating that looting the alchemist lair was one of their more rewarding quests. But it is because of this that they’re now on Weatherbee‘s radar. Kurtz reminds Jughead that he promised them immunity, though this doesn’t apply when they fragrantly break the law. Jughead demands that he return the equipment, but Kurtz refuses. Fangs interjects, calling him a Fizzle Rocks junkie. This nearly leads to a brawl between him and Kurtz, who hasn’t forgotten about Fangs infiltrating the Gargoyle gang to spy on them. Kurtz makes a remark that he should’ve beaten Fangs over the head with the branding iron when he had the chance, angering Fangs, who grabs Kurtz by his jacket, though Jughead breaks the dispute up before it can go any further. Whatever bad blood existed between the Serpents and the Gargoyles is over as they’re all Serpents now. And it’s high time their newer members learned the Serpent laws. Jughead, Sweet Pea, and Fangs begin reciting the sixth Serpent law; "In unity, there is strength." However, the new recruits don’t fall in line. Kurtz tells Jughead that he plays by a different set of rules, to which Jughead tells him that he’s out of the gang. Though, it seems he has no plans on leaving. Kurtz reminds Jughead that both he and his mother came to him for help, leaving Kurtz to conclude that the Serpents need them more than they need the Serpents. So, if they’re rescinding what they promised, then Kurtz tells Jughead that he better come up with something better to offer before he decides to throw the original Serpents out of his gang, as the Gargoyle recruits have the numbers.

Serpent meeting to find Ricky

Jughead calls a Serpent meeting at the bunker. Sweet Pea, Fangs, and Kurtz are among those in attendance. Jughead and Archie share a sketch of Ricky, asking if anyone recognizes him, though no one does. Jughead orders a manhunt. They’re going to break the town into sections, though Kurtz isn’t up to the task, causing Archie to suspect that maybe it was him and his crew who scared Ricky off at Pop’s, though Kurtz claims to have had no involvement as they’re more interested in making drugs. However, he does reveal that there are others out there. Outliers who broke away when they joined the Serpents. Assuming that what Kurtz is saying is the truth, that’s only one more reason that they need to find Ricky, though Kurtz has no intentions on joining the search.

Sweet Pea and Jughead break Fangs' fall

Another meeting is called to inform the others that while they found the kid, he still in danger. So is Archie for that matter. Sweet Pea asks about their next course of action. Their next play is a classic gambit. The hunters become the hunted. Kurtz had said that there are some rogue Gargoyles, so Jughead wants the name of those outliers. And he wants sentries posted at the Gargoyle lair. Their meeting is interrupted by Toni, who tells Jughead that Kurtz is about to kill Fangs. Jughead and Sweet Pea enter the hallway to find Kurtz dangling Fangs over the staircase balcony. They’re getting back at him for infiltrating the Gargoyles. Kurtz calls Fangs a dirty Serpent spy before dropping him so that he too can ascend. However, Sweet Pea and Jughead manage to get to Fangs just in time to break his fall.

Sweet Pea votes in favor of being deputized

Jughead calls for another meeting of the Serpents. This time around he invited his father. Both Kurtz and Sweet Pea questions why. Jughead recalls that Kurtz boasted that the Serpents need him more than he needs them, but Jughead disagrees. One thing is true though, and that's the Serpents are rudderless. They lack identity and focus. And they’re better and stronger when task-focused. That’s why with the help of his father, Serpent Emeritus, they’ve come up with a plan to deputize the Serpents. To become partners with the Riverdale Sheriff’s Department. They’ll work for FP. Help him with investigations. Be his eyes and ears in the community. In return, they’ll get paid and receive school credit to apply for colleges. This is about being in order and ensuring their survival. This is going to be a brand new chapter for the Serpents and they can’t be divided about it. So Jughead decides to put it to a vote. If it’s not unanimous, anyone can leave. Jughead, FP, Sweet Pea, Fangs, and the rest of the Serpents raise their hands in favor, with the exception of Kurtz, who leaves. Sweet Pea then asks if they get to carry guns, which they don’t.[26]

They’re all now officially law keepers, which is why he pulled Tom in to help as he’s the best Sheriff Riverdale’s ever had. Sweet Pea and Fangs receive orders from Jughead

Jughead devises a plan to add onto the "Kill the Red Paladin" quest. After finishing up the quest, Jughead calls the Serpents to the bunker. He tells Sweet Pea and Fangs to go to the old comic shop while Old Deuteronomy and Weasel are going to hit Innuendo, and Termite and Jinx cover All About the Glaze. On top of that, they need to canvas all of Hiram’s hot spots if they’re going to get the word out fast enough. Sweet Pea asks about the Gargoyle masks that Jughead passed out. They’re expected to wear them to convince the players that this quest came directly from the Gargoyle King. There’s one more thing. They aren’t just gaming hot spots. They were hubs for Hiram’s Fizzle Rocks trade, and Jughead’s heard rumor that a new player is moving to restart it. He wants them to discreetly suss any information they can. And if they find anything, he wants them to only come to him.

Sweet Pea and Fangs return to the bunker, where Jughead inquires about their night. Sweet Pea reveals that they have some bad news in regards to his mom, who is taking over the drug trade.[27]

Afterward, Kevin announces that there’s been a slight change to their creative team. While Evelyn has been helping him produce the musical, he’s recently asked her to step up and be his co-director, much to Betty’s disdain, as she points out that Kevin has always directed the musical alone. Which Kevin reveals has always been incredibly stressful, especially after last year’s incident, with Midge being killed by the Black Hood. Kevin then asks for a rundown of everybody’s role. Sweet Pea plays JD, Veronica Sawyer’s bad boy love interest.

Sweet Pea, Archie, Betty, Veronica, Cheryl, Toni, Josie, Fangs, Reggie, and Peaches lay on their backs in the student lounge as Evelyn tells them that everything in their lives matter. There are universal truths within each of their experiences. In rehearsal, they’re going to explore their own personal traumas and experiences and exercise them through their art. Sweet Pea, Fangs, Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Cheryl, Toni, Josie, Reggie, Peaches, Evelyn, and Kevin meet back up in the auditorium the following day. They’re each going to share something they’ve never told anyone before. Sweet Pea reveals that it hurt him to see Archie and Josie getting cozy last night.

Unbeknownst to Toni, Cheryl sits off by the window. She decides to join in on the song. Toni caves at the last moment and tells both Sweet Pea and Peaches who are nearly naked that she’s sorry as she can’t go through with it.

They’ve now reached the emotional climax of the musical. "Seventeen" captures the longing all the characters feel for what they’ve lost, their teen innocence, Kevin tells Sweet Pea and Josie.

The Serpents training session

Led by FP and Tom, the Serpents participate in a late night training simulation at the school. Armed with batons, the Serpents clear the perimeter and move in on Jughead’s command. Sweet Pea takes lead with Jughead and Fangs just behind him. They make their way through the student lounge and out into the hallway, where both Sweet Pea and Jughead forget to check their backs, leaving them open to attack as Tom points a red laser at the back of Sweet Pea’s head. They’ve failed the simulation, convincing FP that they aren’t ready for the streets. In order to stop the rogue Gargoyles, they must work as a team.

Jughead calls a Serpent meeting at their new headquarters. Sweet Pea and Fangs are among them. The drug trade has reared its head again in Riverdale. And though his dad doesn’t think they’re ready, they’re going to be Riverdale’s unofficial DEA. That means they’re going to make life miserable for the Gargoyles and run them out of town, starting with the hotspots to make sure that Gladys isn’t using any of Hiram’s old infrastructure.

Sweet Pea plays the store clerk

Sweet Pea enters the local comic book shop, MLJ Comics. He approaches the counter and asks for a "game enhancement". The clerk hands him a comic book. Hidden inside the pages are Fizzle Rocks. With proof of corruption, Sweet Pea slams the clerk on the table. Then enters Jughead and Fangs. Jughead remembers the clerk from last time when he came with Archie, better known as the Red Paladin. That day, Jughead explains, he was in a good mood. Today, not so much, as he pulls out a knife and demands to know where the drugs are coming from. The clerk reveals that the Gargoyles are dealing again, but Jughead needs to know where specifically they’re selling from. Apparently the Gargoyles have resorted to selling from street corners. They’ll be able to tell by the Gargoyles on wires. Jughead explains that in some cities when you see a pair of sneakers on telephone wires, it means that there’s a drug den nearby. But in this case, they need to look for Gargoyles instead of shoes. Before leavening, Jughead tells Sweet Pea and Fangs to search the shop and confiscate any contraband or drugs or gaming equipment.

The Serpents begin their mission in taking down the Gargoyle. Sweet Pea radios in that they have one last corner to hit, which Jughead wants in on. Sweet Pea, Jughead, and Fangs intercept a drug transaction. Sweet Pea and Fangs hold the Gargoyle against a wall while Jughead talks with the buyer, who he learns in an undercover cop. It turns out that they just ruined FP bust.

The Serpents infiltrate the Gargoyles' den

Sweet Pea, Fangs, Archie, Jughead, Mad Dog, Baby Teeth and the Serpents rally in the gym as they prepare to infiltrate the Gargoyle Gang's apartment building. Thanks to Mad Dog’s recon, they have a pretty decent idea of the layout. Sweet Pea and Archie take out the first two guards at the door. Then the group proceed into the building with Baby Teeth waiting outside as lookout. Armed with weapons such as crowbars and baseball bats, they make their way further into the apartments. The Serpents take 2nd floor while Archie and his guys take the 1st floor. Jughead’s off on his own on another floor. He encounters a Gargoyle, who immediately opens fire, forcing Jughead to take cover. As the gunfire goes off, the Gargoyles run out on both floors and immediately multiple fights break out in the halls and chaos ensues. Sweet Pea, Fangs, the Serpents, Mad Dog, Archie, are all forced to fight.[29]

Physical Appearance

Sweet Pea appears to be slim, but also very tall. He has long jet black hair brushed to the side and dark brown eyes, with the gang's symbol of a double-headed serpent tattooed on the left side of his neck. He is usually seen wearing his Southside Serpent jacket.

Personality

Sweet Pea is protective of his own and has a firm stance on loyalty. Due to Jughead's biological relation to Southside Serpents leader, FP Jones, Sweet Pea was fast to accept Jughead as one of their own. However, Jughead did not accept his hand in friendship initially, which Sweet Pea took as a sign of disrespect, thus triggering his already short temper.

After Jughead went through the Serpents Initiation, Sweet Pea has looked at Jughead now with a sign of respect for him, as Jughead was more than willing to take a beating that was bestowed upon him, and passing all of the tests that were given to him in the process in order to become one of them. Even though Sweet Pea and Jughead had their differences in the beginning, they've since put it aside of them, and moved passed it, showing that Sweet Pea is more than capable of forgiveness.

Relationships

Archie Andrews

RD-Caps-2x04-The-Town-That-Dreaded-Sundown-123-Rumble-Sweet-Pea-Archie

Standoff; Sweet Pea vs Archie

Sweet Pea has a very negative and hostile relationship with Archie. When Archie spread his symbol to draw out the Black Hood by paining his symbol around the Southside, Sweat Pea pulled a knife on him and Archie later drew a gun on him. This then lead to the Riverdale Rumble. Since then, they've become enemies, and due to Sweet Pea's hate towards the Northsiders, for looking down upon Southsiders and treating them like trash, he despises Archie.

However, Sweet Pea and Archie have become allies ever since Archie assisted the Serpents in escaping the police, who raided the Whyte Wyrm, and when Archie led a protest, uniting Northsiders and Southsiders, as they wore Serpent jackets in support of the Southside students staying at Riverdale High.

Toni Topaz

Toni and Sweet Pea at the drag race

Sweet Pea and Toni are good friends, who are often seen together, both in and out of school, though it remains to unclear how they met or how long the two have known each other since meeting. Due to their mutual ties to the Southside Serpents, Sweet Pea and Toni are expected to be willing to die for one another, as the gang present a fairly strong bond of loyalty and family bond. Of the two, Sweet Pea is without a doubt more reckless and impulsive, often acting off of anger, unlike Toni, who on the other hand is more composed and relaxed. On occasion, Toni has been known to calm Sweet Pea, proven when she defused the altercation that nearly unfolded between him and Jughead in the Red and Black offices after the latter refused to join them. This ended with Toni escorting Sweet Pea.

Jughead Jones

RD-Caps-2x05-When-a-Stranger-Calls-25-Jughead-Sweet-Pea

Jughead and Sweet Pea at the Whyte Wyrm

The relationship between Sweet Pea and Jughead didn't get off to a great start, mostly due to Jughead's hesitance in joining the Southside Serpents. With Jughead being the son of the Serpent leader, FP Jones, Sweet Pea was quick on accepting Jughead into his crowd, as one of their own, since the Serpents considered Jughead a Serpent by blood. They viewed him as family and even treated him as such by extending a hand in friendship and helping out when they were asked. However, Jughead didn't share this sentiment of a family bond between himself and the gang. He more so saw himself as a conscientious objector, who would step in when required. It was this attitude towards the Serpents that angered Sweet Pea. He took this as a sign of disrespect. However, Sweet Pea made a point to warn Jughead that as son of the Serpent leader, he had a target on his back, and denying the Serpents hand in friendship would only increase his chances of being attacked. Just as Sweet Pea predicted, Jughead finally decided to join them after an attack on him from the Ghoulies. Jughead has since under gone the initiation into becoming a full-fledged member of the Serpents, resulting in new found respect between the two.

Fogarty and Sweet Pea

Both in and out of school, Sweet Pea and Fangs appear to be close friends, who are often seen together, though it remains unclear how long the two have known each other or whether this friendship extends beyond the Serpents. Due to their mutual ties to the Southside gang, Sweet Pea and Fangs are expected to be willing to die for one another, as the gang present a fairly strong bond of loyalty and family. Sweet Pea and Fogarty are similar in many ways, such as their equally reckless and impulsive behavior, for example their willingness to blow up the Register following Alice Cooper's article on the rumble with the Riverdale Bulldogs, which depicted them as town menaces.
