Archie could've told Weatherbee the hood was mine. But he didn't. In the Book of Reg, that makes you a top tier loyal badass. And we were talking today, and decided if you want to keep the Red Circle going, we're here for you, dude.
— Reggie to Archie and Veronica[src]

Reginald "Reggie" Mantle was initially a recurring character on The CW's Riverdale. He has since been promoted to series regular for the third season onward.[1] He was portrayed by Ross Butler in the first season, though Charles Melton replaced Butler in the second season.

Reggie is a junior at Riverdale High School and captain of the varsity football team, the Riverdale Bulldogs. He was formerly a drug dealer that sold "Jingle Jangle" to other students, specifically Midge Klump, and Moose Mason.

He worked at La Bonne Nuit as a bartender, and he got romantically involved with Veronica Lodge, his employer and classmate. After, Veronica declines Reggie’s request of promoting him as the co-owner of La Bonne Nuit, Reggie quits not only his job but his relationship with Veronica too, as he feels he is just a rebound to her post-breakup with Archie. However, after Reggie helped Veronica set up her father to be incarcerated once again, the two resumed their romance. This didn't last as Veronica ended up choosing Archie over him.

Early Life

Reggie presumably grew up in Riverdale, where he lives with his mother, Melinda, and his father, Marty, the owner of the Luxury Car Jamboree, a local car dealership who has recently expanded his business, adding a bigger dealership on the Eastern Seaboard. Reggie has spent much of his teenage years doing odd jobs at the car dealership, building his athletic physique, and joyriding with some of the cars for sale. [2] Reggie's closest friend appears to be Moose Mason; they are almost always together.

Unbeknownst to friends and their families, Reggie has been raised by an abusive father who beats him for every stupidest thing, leaving him often with black eyes and bruises.[3]

Bulldog Rivalry

Season 1 Episode 1 The River's Edge Reggie at Archie's locker

Reggie talking to Archie at his locker

The first day of school, Reggie joined Archie Andrews at his locker, hyped over Archie's new athletic build, which notably made him perfect for the football team. Archie is "ripped", said Reggie, right before asking Archie how much he benches, and if he uses performance-enhancing drugs. Archie explained that the recent change in his appearance is from working construction all summer at his father's company, Andrews Construction. This led Reggie into his next question, if Archie had sex with any older women as he was out there working on private homes, but he avoids answering.

Following the back-to-school Semi-formal, Reggie attended Cheryl Blossom's after-party in which he volunteered Archie to play "Seven Minutes in Heaven". [4]

Season 1 Episode 2 A Touch of Evil Reggie questioning Kevin

Reggie ranting and raving

Reggie ranted on to Moose and Chuck about Sheriff Keller bringing him in for questioning over the death of Jason Blossom. However, it would have been illogical for Reggie to kill Jason because now the football team is in need of a good quarterback. He went on to say that he should've sent the cops to Moose, as there's still a lingering question that has yet to be answered, why Moose was at Sweetwater River with Kevin Keller in the first place. They found the body, yet they weren't questioned, Reggie implied that being with the Sheriff's son gave Moose a free pass. He then directed his attention to Jughead Jones, who he referred to as a spooky, scrawny, pathetic, internet troll, which made him the perfect suspect. Reggie asked him what it was like to kill Jason, and if he did anything to the body afterward. Jughead reminded him that the correct term was necrophilia, he proceeded to ask Reggie if he could spell the word. This offended Reggie, he leaped out of his seat, towards Jughead, but Archie intervened, leading Reggie to believe that both of them kill Jason. Archie shoved Reggie, but he who shoved back a lot harder, knocking Archie to the ground, then finishing him off with a single punch. [5]

Reggie shared an amused look with Moose after learning that Chuck would be going on a date with Veronica Lodge. Unbeknownst at the time, the look they shared was due to the fact that Veronica would soon be added to the football team's "playbook". A book in which players of the team would list and rank each classmate they hooked up with. [6]

Season 1 Episode 5 Heart of Darkness Reggie on the field

Reggie talking to Archie during practice

Following morning practice, Reggie was asked by Coach Clayton if he'd like to be captain of the Riverdale Bulldogs, Reggie replied that he would. The coach had put him and Archie against each one another to see who would impress him the most, within a week time span, the winner would be the new captain. Reggie believed if anyone deserved to be team captain, and wear Jason's jersey, it's him. Despite Archie's best efforts, Reggie got the better of him on every play, except for one, in which Archie managed to score on him. It wasn't long before Reggie discovered that Archie injured his hand, he insisted that he sit out on practice, but Archie refused.

When the day for the coach to pick the next captain finally arrived, it was almost too close to call, unfortunately for Reggie, Coach picked Archie. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Archie turned down the position, as he couldn't put all of himself in the team, he suggested that it be given to Reggie instead. [7]

Reggie and Moose, along with multiple other players on the Riverdale Bulldogs, heckled Archie, as he got on stage to audition for the 75th annual Variety Show. Archie's stage fright was so severe that he believed that he saw the players wearing werewolf masks. [8]

Season 1 Episode 7 In a Lonely Place Reggie and Veronica at the club

Veronica and Reggie dance at the Roving Eye

Reggie volunteered to help in the search party for Polly Cooper. They began in Eversgreen Forest, and headed East, as that's the direction Polly would have gone if she was trying to leave town undetected. That night, he joined Veronica, Kevin, and Josie, as the four of them went to a local club named the Roving Eye, where they got drunk and danced the night away.

Afterward, Veronica explained the reason for their outing, and how everything was taken from her family once her father was arrested. Even the clothes on their backs were taken, but then her mom told her there was one thing that no one in the world could ever take from her. Reggie being the clueless jock that he is, assumed it was her trust fund, when in fact it was her name. Soon after, the club manager returned with Veronica's credit card, claiming it had been reported stolen, and that he was supposed to call the police because of it. However, Reggie reminded him that this wouldn't be the best idea as they are minors, which would subsequently result in legal troubles for the club. [9]

Editor's Note: The summary written directly below occurred during a deleted scene from "Chapter Thirteen: The Sweet Hereafter". It marked Ross Butler's last appearance as Reggie.

Upon the return of Polly Cooper to Riverdale High School, with Betty on one arm and Veronica on the other, Reggie commented on Polly's appearance, saying "as if I didn't already have mommy issues", which was a reference to her obvious pregnancy. He welcomed Polly back, acknowledging how good she looked. Veronica then told him to beat it, to which Reggie remarked that he would at a later time, while thinking about Polly. [10]

Season 2

Having learned that Archie's father was shot by an masked assailant at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe earlier that morning, Reggie, Moose, and the rest of the Bulldogs joined him at Riverdale General Hospital to wish Fred a speedy recovery and provide Archie with moral support. The Bulldogs are here for you, Reggie told Archie as the two of them embraced.[11]

Dealing Jingle Jangle

Reggie agreeing to supply Archie with drugs

Reggie was approached at his locker by Midge Klump, who was seeking to score some Jingle Jangle for herself as well as her boyfriend, Moose. Reggie instructed Midge to lower her voice while on school property as even the slightest mention of the drug could result in serious consequences for the two of them. He then told her that he'll see what he can do. As Midge left the area, Reggie spotted Archie across the hall, at the front door of the guidance counselor's office. Why are you seeking guidance from Ms. Burble, Reggie asked, though Archie replied that she wasn't. However, Reggie didn't think it would be such a bad idea if Archie did, in fact, seek counseling considering that he looked like Reggie's nuts after football practice. Archie was having trouble with staying awake, so Reggie offered him a number of solutions, all of which consisted of unprescribed medicating with such drugs as Amphetamines, Baclofen, Modafinil. He also offered Archie some Jingle-jangle, which would keep him up for days, in more ways that one. But Reggie couldn't help but wonder why Archie was seeking "uppers". Archie explained that he wanted to be on high alert until his father's shooter is apprehended. With that in mind, Reggie agreed to supply Archie with the drugs.

That evening during class, Reggie, amongst other students, learned that Ms. Grundy last semester's music teacher, was murdered in her Greendale home.

RD-Caps-2x02-Nighthawks-84-Reggie

Reggie pranking Archie

Later that night, Reggie planned to deliver Archie's Jingle-Jangle as planned. However, he did so in an unsuspecting and a rather cruel manner; by showing up to Archie's house in a black hood, similar to that of the shooter. However, before he could even reach the door, Archie tackled him to the ground and ripped off the hood. Reggie almost immediately explained that it was a prank, he didn't expect to be attacked on sight. He then told Archie that he was losing his mind and that the last thing he needed was drugs. Reggie wondered what would have followed had he been the actual shooter. He reminded Archie that the black hooded assailant had a gun. Only a dumbass lunatic brings a baseball bat to a gun fight, Reggie explained.

The following evening, Reggie joined Moose and Midge outside of Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe for Retro Night, where he delivered their Jingle-jangle as promised. All the while, he was unknowingly being photographed by Alice Cooper.[12]

The Red Circle

Reggie telling the team about the shooting at Lover's lane

Reggie ran onto the field later during practice to inform the team that Moose and Midge were at Riverdale General Hospital after Moose was shot several times late last night at lover's lane while kissing and taking Jingle Jangle. Fortunately, both Moose and Midge were alive. Moose even shielded Midge from the gunfire with his own body, saving her from any physical harm. Due to this tragic incident and Coach Clayton being at the hospital with the two students, practice would end early that evening

Shortly after canceling practice, Reggie and several other players intended to visit Moose at the hospital, first stopping at the student lounge to see if Archie would be joining them, which he did.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Reggie and Archie joined Moose in his room, during which time Reggie stole his dessert, then asking him if his nurse was attractive. If so, he ran the risk of getting a boner during a sponge bath. While he squeezed in next to Moose on the single hospital bed, Archie began questioning him on the shooter. By Moose's account, his attacker was wearing a black hood, similar to that of the man that shot Archie's father at Pop's shoppe. Midge then interjected, describing the shooters eyes as being blank, as if there wasn't even a person behind the hood, comparable to those of Michael Myers or the devil himself.

Tired of being under attack by the hooded shooter, Archie called for a meeting to discuss how best to handle the situation. This time it was Moose and Midge, and while they survived, everyone may not be so fortunate next time around. They agreed to start a watch group to focus on Riverdale High, to operate as an extra circle of protection. Reggie took this to mean that Archie wanted them to take action by heading into and seeking out their own version of justice. However, this was not the case. While that was Archie's first thought, he came up with a better plan that excluded the use of violence and weapons; a patrol. And extra sets of eyes and ears for the police. Should they encounter the shooter, Archie told them to call Sheriff Keller. They were watchdogs, not vigilantes. As for an official name, The Red Circle was specifically chosen by Archie. From that point forward, they would protect themselves. The Red Circle then took to the streets, passing out flyers to residents who may feel scared or need protection.

The following night, Reggie waited in his car for Archie to arrive when he noticed the wooden baseball bat in Archie's hand, reminding him of his previous statement about not being vigilantes and having no need for weapons. Archie explained that he's had the bat since he was ten. In response, Reggie told Archie to look in the backseat, where he had a pipe and a lug wrench on standby in case the time came when he would have to use them. Reggie then pulled off, and together, the two of them began their patrol of the streets. It wasn't long before they received their first call; the caller being Ethel Muggs. She claimed that she was being stalked by someone in a large van on Hastings street. He and Archie soon arrived on scene to Ethel hiding in the cornfield and the van that Ethel previously described, speeding off.[13]

Disband the Red Circle?

Reggie pleading with Archie

When the Riverdale Bulldogs were suspended due to the vigilantes' activity, the Red Circle met at the school's locker room, where Reggie tried to dissuade Archie's from his vendetta against the Black Hood, suggesting him to sign the headmaster's paper to revoke the suspension. When Archie refused, Reggie unleashed his anger against school's furniture, kicking a locker. Reggie was very much at odds with Archie's recklessness to provoke the Black Hood, since the killer could come after them, and when Archie suggested going to the Southside for an open declaration of war, Reggie called himself out of the group, taking with him the other Bulldogs from the meeting, leaving Archie and Doiley alone with their dangerous plan.

Reggie during the rumble

Next evening, Reggie went to Andrews house with the rest of the Red Circle members and pizza boxes, just in time to cool off an argument between Archie and Veronica. Since Archie hadn't betrayed him with Mr. Weatherbee and Sheriff Keller by keeping it secret that the black hood found at school was the one Reggie used to prank him, Reggie reconsidered his decision to quit their friendship, stating that Archie's was a loyal friend and that the group decided to support Archie's personal fight against the Black Hood. The reconciliation was suddenly interrupted by some Southside Serpents led by Sweet Pea, seeking revenge against Archie after he threatened them at their own turf. Reggie steadily stepped in, stating that Sweet Pea had a bad timing because "Bulldogs ate snakes for lunch". The two sides went out for a rumble, which degenerated quickly until Veronica put an end to it with a gunshot towards the sky, pushing the Serpents to flee. Reggie, then, promptly helped Dilton, who had been stabbed in the leg during the fight. Headed to the hospital, Reggie told him to lie about the reason he got injured. [14]

Reggie and Josie on Jingle Jangle

When Veronica's friend from New York, Nick St. Clair, came to Riverdale, Reggie was invited to a private party at Nick's room at the Five Seasons with Archie, Betty, Cheryl, Kevin and Josie and the Pussycats. After several drinks, Nick suggested they get high with Jingle Jangle and Reggie enthusiastically supported the idea. After taking drugs, the guys quickly lost their inhibitions, kissing and dancing with each other. Reggie and Josie made out on the sofa, until a fight between Veronica and Betty cooled off the wild party. [15]

When Alice Cooper gathered in her living room the parents of those who were at Nick St. Clair's party, Reggie was standing beside his mom who advised him not to say anything without a lawyer. Unfortunately for her, Reggie already spilled out he was the one who gave Jingle Jangle to Nick. Veronica came to his rescue, blaming Nick for asking it but Reggie was still forced to admit that his dealer was from the Southside. Grounded, Reggie and the gang were sent by Mayor McCoy to picking up garbage at Pickens Park.

When there, Reggie started hitting on Josie who wasn't helping at all. Reggie told her that although she sees herself as Beyoncé, that day she was just a commoner like any of them. The two shortly flirted until Veronica interrupted them to ask for a private chat with Reggie. Once far from prying ears, Veronica asked him the name of the dealer, saying she wouldn't take a "No" for an answer.

Some time later, Reggie enjoyed the Riverdale Drag Race sitting on the hood of a car along with Cheryl, Kevin, Veronica and Betty, cheering for Archie and Jughead competing against the Ghoulies led by Malachai. [16]

Reggie was with the rest of the group exchanging Christmas gifts in the school cafeteria, making jokes as usual. When Veronica received a gift certificate for a couple's massage from Josie, who quickly suggested going with her mom, implicitly referring to Archie and Veronica's recent breakup, Reggie volunteered for a massage with Hermione. The exchange of gifts was interrupted when Midge and Moose joined the group. Reggie immediately ran to hug Moose, who had not yet recovered from the shooting, supporting himself with the aid of a crutch. [17]

Serpents at Riverdale High

Reggie and other Riverdale Bulldogs were playing basketball at the school's gym when Principal Weatherbee informed the students that Southside High had been closed and that, as a result, Southsiders students would join Riverdale High School. Reggie was not very keen on the idea, snorting in disapproval.

Next day, when the Southsiders students assigned to Riverdale High arrived at school, Reggie walked alongside Cheryl, Bulldogs and River Vixens to spoil Lodge's welcoming committee. The tension between the two sides became increasingly untenable, with Cheryl provoking the Southsiders with biased remarks on how the school standards would increasingly drop due to their underachieving behavior. Archie stepped in, suggesting to put aside their Northside vs Southside differences and start over, to which Reggie replied that he doesn't speak for the Bulldogs. Reggie and Sweet Pea, then, nearly come to blows after Reggie promptly reminded Archie about the rumble with the Southside Serpents which happened a few months earlier. The heated discussion was interrupted before it could degenerate by Principal Weatherbee, inviting students to go to class. Before leaving, Reggie leaned toward Veronica, murmuring to her that "they traitors picked the wrong side".

Some time later, Principal Weatherbee harshly asked for Jughead Jones, Sweet Pea, Toni Topaz and Fangs Fogarty (who were spending time in the student lounge with Kevin, Veronica and Josie) to follow him in the corridor, inquiring them about a graffiti of the Southside Serpents' symbol drawn on the corridor floor. Reggie took advantage of it for sneaky remarks about the Serpents, and how they did nothing but deface everything. He then had a brief debate with Veronica, not grasping her dainty subtle irony about Reggie's inability to be properly sneaky; since he was showing off too much, it was evident that the graffiti had been made by the Bulldogs to put the blame on the Serpents. Nevertheless, Mr. Weatherbee punished the Southsiders, forcing them to remove or hide any gang paraphernalia such as the leather jackets or the tattoos during school hours.

When, on the following day, Jughead showed up at school wearing his leather jacket, Reggie triggered and demanded him to remove his gang jacket. At Jughead's denial, the two began to scuffle in the student lounge and ended up in the principal's office, where Mr. Weatherbee suspended Jughead.[18]

In the days to follow, Reggie became unwillingly accustomed to having Southside Serpents in the corridors of Riverdale High School. In particular, his well-known pride was hurt in one of his major interests: sports. Reggie, in fact, was literally thrown to the ground by Sweet Pea during a basketball game, adding more and more impatience towards the Southsiders invading his own spotlight and school. His friend Archie, then, thought well to add insult to injury, taking a break from the basketball team to join the school wrestling team. [19]

Vote Team ROSIE

Reggie's poster

Reggie decided to run for body student and was putting up his poster in the hallway when he spotted Veronica and Betty on their way back from the restroom. Recalling Ethel Muggs throwing a milkshake on Veronica's face earlier in the school cafeteria, Reggie started harassing Veronica, telling her that he "got some nuts to top off that shake." Despite Betty telling him to shut up, Reggie asked Veronica what were the odds that her father is the first inmate in the prison he was building, Veronica grew so angry that she punched Reggie in the face and dropped him on the floor.

Reggie's bruised face

The following day in the school hallway, Reggie scoffed at Veronica's campaign, which consists of bribing voters with kisses and cupcakes.

At the campaign rally, Reggie was sitting among other students as Josie gets on stage to give her endorsement to Betty and Veronica's campaign. While boringly listening to his friend siding with Veronica, Reggie was surprised and amused by the flyers that Ethel started to give students, revealing that Veronica knew all about her parents turning Southside High into a prison. It turned out that Josie had fed Ethel all of this information to get back at Veronica for all the lives her family has destroyed with the last year. [20]

However, when Archie offered him the Bulldogs' vote should he help, Reggie reluctantly agreed.

Reggie adds that he could've worn the shoes to the Pep-rally. When Archie asks him about what's going on at school, Reggie says  Coach Clayton is working the Bulldogs harder than ever. Josie accepts as she has been working nonstop to find her new sound as a solo act and is in need of a place to try it out. As for Kevin, Veronica asks him to be her emcee. They then receive a call from Pop Tate that Sheriff Minetta is upstairs, leaving them to conclude that they've been set up. Reggie is tasked with disposing of the drugs while Veronica distracts Minetta upstairs. Sheriff Minetta explains that he's there for an inspection. By the time Veronica brings him down, Reggie has sufficiently disposed of the Jingle Jangle, much to Minetta's dismay. Given the failed set up, Minetta then reveals that he's collecting donations for Riverdale's under-funded sheriff department, which Veronica deduces as being nothing more than a classic shake down. Sheriff Minetta tells her that he'll be back to collect the donation after her opening event. As Minetta exits, Veronica shares with Reggie her suspicion that the drugs were sent by Penny Peabody. She and Reggie know these encounters are a result of her father trying to bait her into a confrontation.

Veronica and Reggie head topside, where they find Hiram in the diner with a portrait of Veronica that he thought would be more fitting at the speakeasy, which he is sure will be a roaring success. While he knows that Veronica doesn't want to hear it, he is in fact proud of her. Veronica is glad he came, if only to see how a legitimate business is run. So, she invites him downstairs and tells Reggie to keep an eye on him.

Standing next to Veronica, Reggie enjoys Josie singing "Anything Goes" on stage during a performance fitting the noir style of the speakeasy. [28]

Reggie, Kevin and Josie discover the truth about the Midnight Club

Betty calls Josie, Kevin and Reggie into the Blue and Gold offices to inform them of the Midnight Club and their parents’ past involvement with Gryphons and Gargoyles. Josie is in disbelief and Kevin questions how his father and her mother were together even back then. Much like Josie, Reggie is also skeptical. He doesn’t believe that his father did live action role-play with as he put it "a group of lame ass nerds". Regardless of what they would like to believe, Betty needs them to subtly ask their parents about Gryphons and Gargoyles, as her suspicion is that whoever was running the game back then is also running it now. Josie, Reggie, and Kevin seem aggravated at the insinuation that one of their parents could be responsible for what happened to Ben and Dilton, but they agree nonetheless.

Reggie's left with a black eye by his dad

Josie, Kevin and Reggie meet again with Betty in the Blue and Gold to discuss their efforts to gain more information from their parents. Josie and Kevin came up with nothing as their parents denied any involvement, but announced their engagement. As bad as that was, Reggie’s dad’s reaction to Reggie’s questioning in regards to G&G was much worse, as Reggie was left with a black eye. Reggie wonders why their parents are acting so secretive about something that happened 25 years ago and what Betty is keeping from them. Before Betty can answer, Veronica enters. She tells them how Archie is caught up in some diabolical teen fight club and that she intends to break him out of juvie with all of their help.

Josie, Kevin and Reggie in the chemistry lab

Veronica, Betty, Kevin, Josie, and Reggie meet at La Bonne Nuit to discuss Archie's rescue plan. The slightest deviation and Archie could end up dead. They will need a distraction if they’re going to disorient the guards and save Archie. Something they can sneak into the location easily, that won’t arouse suspicion, something they’ll have to make themselves, so Josie, Kevin, and Reggie sneak into the chemistry class to make smoke grenades, masqueraded as beverages. Betty will take care of the getaway route.

Reggie and Veronica head to the fight club

Veronica and Reggie, while incognito, pull up to the fight. Their entry is blocked by security, who asks for the password. When they give the wrong password, Veronica is forced to improvise. She claims her name is "Monica Norton", suggesting a relation to Warden Norton. She and Reggie, who she states to be her fiancé, want to see blood. Whether that be of from the fighters or the guard matters little to her. So she threatens to call Warden Norton should her entry into the building be denied. The guard folds, allowing them both in.

Veronica, Reggie and Josie ready for action

Josie, disguised as a waitress, brings Reggie and Veronica over a dozen or so "beverages". She overheard the guards betting heavily against Archie. They say he’s going down. Reggie remarks that Archie’s opponent is huge and that Archie doesn’t seem to have much time left. So, Veronica orders the others to get in position and wait for her signal.

While getting into position, Hiram grabs Veronica by the arm, demanding answers and ordering Veronica to stop whatever she's planning, but Veronica disobeys, stomping on his foot and then signaling Josie and Reggie. The three of them proceed to throw the smoke grenades into the ring that quickly fills with smoke. When it does, Archie makes his escape.

Veronica and Reggie to Archie's rescue

Meanwhile, Josie and Reggie wait on the side of the road for Veronica to meet them with Archie. Before long, Veronica comes from out the woods with Archie, who can barely stand. They duck down behind the car at the sound of passing police cars, and once the coast is clear, they put Archie in the back of the car and drive off.

After they arrive at Dilton's bunker to regroup with the others, Toni patches Archie up and tells him not to make any sudden movements. Archie reveals that it was Joaquin who stabbed him though Archie thinks the Warden made him do it. He then asks where are they, to which Betty explains Dilton’s bunker. The only people who know about it are in the room and it is the safest place in Riverdale. Veronica then notices the branding on Archie’s side, courtesy of Warden Norton. Jughead, Betty, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Toni and Cheryl seem particularly intrigued by the brand. Veronica then calls for everyone’s attention. Since her father saw her, she has to do some damage control on the home front. But, someone needs to stay with Archie at all times. Betty and Jughead volunteer to take the first shift. Equally important, Veronica announces that everyone in the room is part of a pact. From this moment on, no one is to know where the bunker is. No one was involved with the breakout and no one knows where Archie is. They are all expected to take this to the grave.

Reggie ponders the idea of playing G&G

In a booth at Pop’s, Kevin tells Reggie and Josie how he searched the woods for Joaquin but couldn’t find him as he had to eventually double-back to act as the decoy. They quickly stop the discussion as Pop Tate approaches with their orders. Once he leaves, they resume talking. Joaquin is out there, is Kevin’s last words on the matter. Reggie, however, can’t believe they pulled off the escape. He then looks to Josie and Kevin, asking if they’re going to play Gryphons and Gargoyles to find out what their parents and Betty won’t tell them. Over the radio, an important news bulletin is made, announcing Archie’s escape. [29]

Reggie states his alibi

At Riverdale High School, Sheriff Minetta and Mayor Lodge heads to a classroom to question Veronica, Betty, Jughead, Cheryl, Josie, Kevin, Reggie, Sweet Pea, Fangs and Evelyn. They suspect that Archie had help escape Leopold and Loeb Juvenile Detention Center, and the kids are the main suspects. In the classroom Sheriff Minetta informs them that hiding a convict and information from the law is a felony offense. So, whoever aided and abetted Archie is just as much a criminal as he is. Reggie claims that he was busy all day, welcoming the sheriff to check his browser history. When the sheriff turns his attention to Evelyn, she explains that she never even met Archie, plus on Mondays, she attends meetings for the Farm. When the sheriff asks where Josie was during the time of the breakout, she struggles to come up with an alibi, eventually settling with her being alone in the music room. Sheriff Minetta will be looking into all their alibis. As he continues to antagonize Josie, she suddenly has a seizure. Cheryl rushes to her aid, catching Josie and telling the sheriff to back off while Reggie is scared by Josie's seizure. [30]

Reggie and Veronica discuss their incoms

Reggie is working behind the bar at La Bonne Nuit when Veronica enters the room. He asks if she’s still upset about Archie leaving town, which she is, but it’s not the only reason she’s upset. La Bonne Nuit is just barely scraping by. Reggie counters that business is steady. However, one thing Veronica learned from her father is that steady is one bad week away from broke. They’re never going to turn a profit selling five-dollar mocktails to high schoolers who sit around all day playing G&G. Reggie thinks that they need to start a side hustle. This gives Veronica an idea. After contacting Elio Grande, Veronica decides to hosts a casino night.

Veronica and Reggie at the Casino night

Later that day, they host the event as planned. Thanks to Elio, they’re going to pull in bank. However, Reggie counters that he might break it instead. He claims that Elio is going to wipe them out as he hasn’t lost a single hand all night. That means that he’s cheating, which comes as no surprise to Veronica as Elio is a criminal from a family of criminals. Reggie suggests roughing him up and throwing him out but Veronica has a better idea.

Reggie is afraid they'll lose

She approaches Elio and warns him to cash out and walk away while he still can. Elio refuses. He heard of Veronica’s estranged relationship with her father and now believes that he has nothing to worry about. Veronica takes a seat next to Elio, asking to be dealt in. She wants to raise the stakes of the game. One hand of blackjack, winner takes all. Veronica is gambling the deed to Pop’s and by extension La Bonne Nuit while Elio is gambling with all his winnings from the night. When the game seems to tilt in Elio’s favor, he remarks that Veronica will always be welcome at his speakeasy, adding that he might even rename it to "Veronica’s". Miraculously, against all odds, Veronica wins the game of blackjack, retaining her ownership of Pop’s as well as taking all of Elio’s winnings.

Veronica reveals to Reggie she played Elio

As the night comes to an end, Reggie notes that Veronica made some serious money tonight. He admits that he was worried that Veronica could’ve lost it all, but she didn’t. He swears that he thought Elio was cheating, but apparently he wasn’t considering that he lost to Veronica. She then reveals to Reggie that she had a meeting with her father earlier and learned that Elio is a compulsive gambler, like his own father, and that the best way to beat players like him is fast with no remorse. Reggie is amazed, stating that Veronica scammed the scammer. [31]

Reggie and Veronica are at Pop's discussung about the fact that her parents are up to something and even tried to ship her off to New York. It’s almost as if they don’t want her around for what’s coming next. Kevin, Moose and the rest of the RROTC come barging into the diner giggling hysterically. Veronica initially suspects they’re on Jingle Jangle, but Reggie informs her that it’s not that. Her father’s pulled that off the market and replaced it with some new candy, Fizzle Rocks, dealt not by the Ghoulies, but a new gang, the Gargoyles. Veronica is certain that it all ties into G&G. So, she requests that Reggie do sum sussing for her to find out what he can about Fizzle Rocks. Last year, Veronica helped her parents spin their criminal web and good people got hurt. This year, Veronica feels responsible for taking them down

Reggie offers his knowledge of drugs

After Principal Weatherbee informs the students of upcoming changes at school, Veronica finds haven in La Bonne Nuit with Reggie. She questions how drugs, gargoyles, mystery men in hazmat suits and secret school board meetings tie in together. While Reggie has not the slightest clue, he did do as asked, providing Veronica with suss. The Fizzle Rocks distributors, otherwise known as the Gargoyles, are giving their product up for free. Veronica’s familiar with this scheme. Hook them with the first taste and they're customers for life. Furthermore, Fizzle Rocks are coming from the Southside prison that Veronica’s dad is building. She concludes that this must be where he moved shop after she, Cheryl and Toni busted his lab at the Whyte Wyrm. Veronica then calls Cheryl to ask for the time and place of the school board meeting. Wounded Reggie comforted by Veronica

Veronica is very apologetic for her father’s actions, and admittedly, she should’ve seen this coming. What Reggie doesn’t get is how they knew he’d be there. He never takes the same road twice. Hiram made it very clear that if Veronica wishes to run La Bonne Nuit in a post-quarantine Riverdale then she has to give him 10% of her earnings, which Reggie is very much against. However, Veronica has come up with a plan to minimize that price. Pop Tate hands her a cooked book for the speakeasy, which’ll hopefully deceive Hiram into thinking that he’s getting 10% when in actuality he’s only getting 5%. Reggie is impressed, calling Veronica a bad ass.

Reggie and Veronica meets with Jughead to plan their upcoming move against the Gargoyle gang, but first they have to share the little information they have on them.

Reggie vs the Gargoyle Gang

A few days later, on his way back to town from another beer run, Reggie comes across another set of road spikes just as before, except this time he sees them and stops. Reggie exits the truck and is immediately surrounded. As they head towards the back of the truck to trash the cargo, the Serpents attack, jumping out he back of the truck with weapons in hand. One Gargoyle is knocked to the ground as the others flee. Sweet Pea and FP hold him up as Jughead uses him to send a message to Hiram. He informs the Gargoyle that Veronica is now under the protection of the Serpents and that Riverdale has not fallen. The Serpents then proceed to let the Gargoyle go to deliver the message.

Reggie understands and falls back. He wonders how Archie's doing, to which Veronica explains that he's unsettled and stressed. While she can’t do anything about the former, the latter, she can help with.

Reggie is annoyed by Varchie moment

At La Bonne Nuit, the kids organized a welcome home party for Archie. In attendance is Veronica, Jughead, Reggie, Kevin, and many others. Archie, Betty, and Jughead take a seat as Veronica sings on stage for Archie. Not far away, Reggie sits visibly annoyed, though this goes unnoticed by all. As Veronica continues to sing, Archie seems to become overwhelmed by all his grief and suffering, taking off right in the middle of Veronica's performance.

Reggie and Veronica discuss Archie's recent strange behavior, though Veronica does come to his defense, claiming that it all may be a bit too overwhelming for him, being back in Riverdale and all. However, the Archie they both saw last night is a different person. As for what this may mean for Archie and Veronica's relationship, Veronica's too afraid to say out loud.

Reggie discusses with Archie

Reggie enters the locker room and picks a fight with Archie, referring to how he "stormed out of the speakeasy like a little bitch." A statement that doesn't sit well with Archie. It is then that Reggie notices the scars on his body. Archie reveals to Reggie that he was attacked by a bear. Reggie reasons this is the reason Archie has been acting so strange since his return.

In the student lounge, Reggie is approached by Archie that wants to talk to Reggie about cheating, which Reggie takes to mean that Veronica revealed to Archie how they kissed. However, in actuality, Archie only came to Reggie to see if he knew of a way to cheat on the SATs. Realizing that he's exposed himself and Veronica, Reggie apologizes, reasoning that he and Veronica didn't think Archie was ever coming back, though Archie doesn't stick around to hear him out.

Reggie offers moral support to Veronica

Reggie and Smithers meet with Veronica after she fired their last two capos. They need to show strength during a time of weakness. Smithers recalls a moment back in the trenches, where their numbers were greatly diminished and their enemy could storm the barricade at any moment. And so Smithers collected the helmets from their dead and propped them atop of their bayonets, high enough to create the illusion that their numbers were greater than they actually were, causing their enemies to pause. From that, Veronica comes up with an idea that'll require Smithers' bus driver cap.

Reggie declines to serve Archie

As Josie sings on stage at La Bonne Nuit, Archie drinks his pain away at the bar, with Reggie serving him. Reggie then declines to serve Archie any further as he requests another drink. He does however offer to call Archie cab, explaining that Veronica's dealing with enough as it is, she doesn't need Archie making a scene. As Archie begins to become unruly, he is roughed up by security, though Josie comes to his rescue, seeing Archie out and taking him home.

Afterwards, Veronica arrives at the docks. With Smithers as the driver and Reggie in the back with his face hidden and only the hat on his head visible as he impersonates Hiram, Veronica begins collecting from all the businesses her father has a hand in. And her ruse works like a charm.

Veggie Vs Hermione

Hermione calls Reggie and Veronica down to Town Hall since the two of them decided to take it upon themselves to burn all the Fizzle Rocks that she had already sold. Since this is their fault, Hermione has decided to make them responsible for paying back the money that's owed. Hermione suggests that they start with the speakeasy's coffers. However, as Veronica explains, they don't make nearly enough to pay it off, though this is no longer Hermione's problem. She recommends Veronica come up with the money fast as the buyer has a reputation for being dangerously unhinged. Veronica asks who the buyer is, but Hermione refuses to tell her, only explaining that they're sending an intermediary. As for how much money they owe, Hermione hands Reggie and Veronica a piece of paper with the exact amount on it and it is indeed a heavy sum.

Reggie has an idea on how to make money

Time is running and Veronica and Reggie have yet to come up with a way to pay back the mysterious buyer, whose Fizzle Rocks they burned. Veronica's combined her liquid funds from Pop's and La Bonne Nuit. Even with that, they're not even close. Reggie suggests robbing a bank, which Veronica is opposed to as they tend to have round-the-clock guards with guns. Instead of robbing a bank, Reggie comes up with a robbery on a smaller scale. He wants to rob his father's dealership, where he keeps a safe. Veronica is initially against this, as she does want Reggie stealing from his own family. Reggie explains that everything is insured, so his dad will receive a nice pay out, which is more than he deserves for all the black eyes he's given Reggie over the years. His father's security is only on duty at night, after closing, so they can hit the lot during the day, while his dad is usually at Pop's with a customer, trying to close a sale. Veronica recommends that he wear a Gargoyle mask, so as not to get recognized. Veronica even offers to join Reggie as the getaway driver. They then share a kiss.

Veronica sits in the getaway car reading a book as gunshots ring throughout the neighborhood. In her rear view mirror, she sees Reggie, disguised in a Gargoyle mask, running towards the car with a bag of money. He'd been shot in the arm, though he's alright, and so the two of them make their getaway.

Reggie and Veronica meet with Gladys

Veronica and Reggie wait at the meeting point for the mysterious buyer's intermediary. It turns out to be Gladys Jones, Jughead's mom, though neither Veronica nor Reggie are aware at the moment. Gladys exits her vehicle and approaches Veronica and Reggie. They throw the bag of money at her feet. Inside is only some of her money, all of which is covered in blue dye. Gladys correctly identifies Veronica as Hermione's daughter. Gladys then introduces herself to them as Jughead's mother. Both Veronica and Reggie are shocked, though they take this opportunity to ask for more time to recover the rest of the money. Gladys admires the fact that the two of them came out there knowing they were short. It shows responsibility. Not to mention that they sort of remind Gladys of herself and FP back in the day. Gladys makes them a deal. Since she’ll be sticking around Riverdale for a while, she’ll take their dyed money, but she's going to have to charge a fee because she's going to have to get it laundered. And then they'll figure out a payment plan for the rest of the money they owe. But in exchange, Gladys wants Reggie's car. Lastly, she asks that they don't tell Jughead about their business dealings. If they do, then she's going to have to tell Hiram about Hermione going behind his back for a cut.

At the Pembrooke, as Veronica and Reggie are about to have sex, their phones ring. It's Veronica's mother and Reggie's father. Reggie worries that maybe his dad knows that it was him who robbed the dealership.

Reggie plots with Veronica

At La Bonne Nuit, Reggie and Veronica watch helplessly from the bar as Gladys Jones and her companions cause commotion. Reggie asks if Veronica would like for him to bounce someone out, but with their current standing with Gladys, that would be impossible. Hiram then approaches Veronica as he too is at the speakeasy. He's courting several important perspective clients. Veronica wonders where she should charge for the expense of the drinks, however, Hiram has no intentions on paying as he believes the drinks should be comped because of the money Veronica currently owes. Gladys and her Serpent pals then proceed to make a mess of things after knocking over a table. As the night comes to an end, and Veronica and Reggie are all that's left in La Bonne Nuit, Veronica wonders just where everything went bad. Gladys and her father are running all over the speakeasy and Veronica doesn't have any leverage because she owes them both money. So, every dollar she makes goes straight to them. Reggie states that they need a new line on a cash cow, which reminds her of Casino night with Elio. They'd be able to pay off their debts in weeks, but Reggie is rather hesitant, however, he comes to agree.

Reggie and Veronica plan the Casino upgrade

Veronica and Reggie welcome Josie along with more than half a dozen employees to the casino of La Bonne Nuit. They've got poker on the floor, blackjack at the bar, nickel and quarter slots along the wall, and a horse race-themed wheel of chance in the corner. Reggie already called dibs on spinning it. It goes without saying that discretion is of the upmost importance. But Josie is forced to ask the obvious question. What to do if they're raided? Veronica and Reggie have made upgrades to the place to account for such a threat. They have a number of compartments and close-in doors to hide all the Casino paraphernalia. At which point Veronica will bat her eyelids and say "What secret casino, Officer?"

Next day, at La bonne Nuit, Gladys reveals to Veronica and Reggie that when she was their age, she used to perform at the Whyte Wyrm. Veronica concludes that Gladys is looking to make a comeback, and should she agree to allow Gladys to perform on stage, she has to shave 5% off of the debt Veronica owes, to which Gladys agrees.

Hiram suggests that his associate give Gladys some tips, to which she responds by pulling out a knife and telling them that she has a sharp tip of her own to give to them. As things are getting a bit too heated, Veronica finally allows Reggie to bounce Larry, who is in disbelief that he’s being kicked out. Reggie and Veronica plot to deal with Gladys and Hiram

Veronica comes down the stairs of La Bonne Nuit to find Gladys serving herself at the bar. She claims that Reggie waters down her drinks. Hiram then enters the speakeasy with another one of his associates, though he tells him that he owns the speakeasy, which only further aggravates Veronica. She is near her breaking-point, telling Reggie that this must come to an end. He is in agreement, so much so that he even misses the Serpents as they could use the muscle. Veronica asks how their take has been since the casino upgrade. He replies that their profit has almost doubled. With that, Veronica devises a plan that’ll require for her to siphon some of that off.[37]

Cheryl arrives at La Bonne Nuit. She is greeted at the door by Reggie. Cheryl claims to have baked goods for Toni. A gesture of goodwill after a disagreement they had earlier. Cheryl heads down, where she finds Toni and the Pretty Poisons singing on stage with Veronica.

Reggie asks Veronica to become business partners

After closing at the speakeasy, Reggie asks Veronica to talk business. He's invested a lot of time there. Being a bartender, a bouncer, a delivery man, and Pit boss, amongst other things. He's also made sacrifices, like giving his car to Gladys. So, Reggie would like to become business partners with Veronica. While he has been helpful and dedicated, Veronica still owes a hefty debt to Gladys and her father. It wouldn't be wise for her to begin another partnership. Reggie however doesn't accept that. He knows his worth and wants Veronica to know it too. Veronica knows his worth, but to quote her abuelita, "no one walks on water in my place, except me."

Reggie reveals his insecurities to Veronica

After a night off, Veronica and Reggie meet back up at La Bonne Nuit. Veronica asks if he is self-destructing because she won't make him her business partner. Reggie admits this is part of the reason. He also has an issue with how he's being treated by Veronica. He wants to be more than just her errand boy, Pit boss, and casual hook up. Veronica assures Reggie that he matters, but lest they forget that she just went through a wrenching breakup with Archie just a few months ago. Reggie questions if they would even be dating if not for the speakeasy, which Veronica admits that they probably wouldn't be, but she's glad they are. Reggie feels as if Veronica owes him for all he's given up for her, but he's not given an ounce in return. Having heard enough, Veronica returns Reggie's car keys to him after buying it back from Gladys. Now they don't owe each other anything. With his keys in hand, Reggie leaves the speakeasy. [38]

Kevin then asks for a rundown of everybody’s role. Josie’s playing Veronica Sawyer, outcast turned Heather turned outcast again. Sweet Pea plays JD, Veronica Sawyer’s bad boy love interest. Reggie’s playing Ram Sweeney while Archie plays Kurt Kelly. Just two straight dudes doing some theater, Reggie says. Given how much dancing there is in Heathers, Kevin and Evelyn figured they should bring in a choreographer, that being Toni, which comes as an unwelcome surprise to Cheryl.

Rwggie discovers a hurtful truth

The cast meet back up in the auditorium the following day. They’re each going to share something they’ve never told anyone before. Kevin reveals that he’s being haunted by Midge’s ghost. He’s been thinking about her all the time since rehearsal started as he feels guilty. Fangs has been seeing her as well, but in his nightmares. Evelyn sees this as a beautiful experience. Through revealing their truth, they’ve found an unexpected connection. Sweet Pea reveals that it hurt him to see Archie and Josie getting cozy last night. This is the first of Betty hearing about this, and so she looks to Archie and asks if he and Josie are dating, but he doesn’t answer. Under the suspicion that he may have been nothing more than a rebound, Reggie asks Veronica if she knew of Archie and Josie’s relationship. Veronica had no idea, she claims. Evelyn then asks if Veronica has anything to share. She tells the group that her parents are separating. Admittedly, her family is unconventional, but she always thought no matter what that they’d stay together. Hearing this, Betty goes over to comfort Veronica.

Reggie and Veronica break up

Reggie now realizes that the real reason Veronica wanted to get back together is because her parents are separating. Veronica wanted to ignore it and feel better, so she kept it to herself. Reggie also makes her feel better. She knows how this may seem, which is why she would understand him not wanting to talk to her again, however, that’s not what Reggie’s saying. While what’s happening in Veronica’s home life is tragic, he doesn’t think that he and Veronica should be together at the moment.

The cast sing "Seventeen"

The musical ends with Sweet Pea, Toni, Reggie, Josie, Archie, Veronica, Cheryl, Betty, Jughead, Kevin, Evelyn, and Fangs on stage singing "Seventeen". Many are in attendance, including FP, Gladys, and Jellybean. Penelope also attends the musical, watching from the audience along with Hiram and Hermione. As the musical concludes, Edgar Evernever rises from the audience, clapping slowly and very dramatic-like. [39]

Later, at La Bonne Nuit, bets are being placed, with Peaches 'N Cream working the operation. Just over at the bar, Veronica thanks Reggie for agreeing to help. He then asks how she’s holding up, to which she responds not well, but they have to keep up appearances. Veronica then takes to the stage, where she performs.

Reggie tells Veronica about bets being placed

At La Bonne Nuit, just moments after Peaches gets a call from one of the spectators at the fight, the FBI raids the speakeasy. Veronica and Agent Ardelia have a rehearsed exchange of words. She asks if Veronica’s the owner of the establishment, to which Veronica says she is not and that her father is the actual owner, who is currently at El Royale participating in an illegal boxing match. Veronica and Agent Ardelia then part ways. Unfortunately, all is not good as Veronica had hoped it would be. She gets word from Reggie that some last-minute bets are coming in, and they all want odds that Hiram is going to kill Archie in the ring.

Archie stops by the Pembrooke to tell Veronica how he feels about her. However, upon his arrival, he discovers Reggie is there as well. Veronica explains that Reggie was helping her earlier at La Bonne Nuit and came by to tell her that he wanted to be with her, and she said she wanted to be with him too. Veronica hesitantly admits this is true, and so Archie decides to leave.[40]

Reggie is the fastest player

Summer is over and it's the first day of the senior year at Riverdale High. In the locker room, Coach Clayton is quite satisfied with Reggie, telling him that he is the fastest on the team. Reggie enjoys the moment when Archie and Mad Dog enter the locker room. Archie asks Coach Clayton if there is still a place for Munroe "Mad Dog" Moore on the team. The coach says that although the team was already lined up, Munroe can join them to practice to show them what he got.

Mr. Mantle scolds Reggie

On the field, Munroe is much stronger and faster than Reggie and this greatly irritates Mr. Mantle who is watching the game. Reggie's dad orders him to go to him and Reggie is scolded. Mr. Mantle accuses his son of being a fool for his embarrassing display.

Reggie argues with Archie

In the locker room, Reggie provokes Munroe by asking him if the story of the soap bars in the prison showers is true. Munroe is about to beat Reggie but Archie gets in the middle, asking for explanations. Reggie says he has been captain of the team since he was in sophomore year. He doesn't need some ex-con who showed up last-minute stealing his thunder. Archie replies that he saw his father give him a hard time and tells Reggie to man up.

At La Bonne Nuit, Reggie is sitting at the counter with his face hidden behind a couple of shades. Veronica is angry and asks Reggie if he is the "inside source" who has leaked about her alleged criminal activities to Rumordale and asks him if he hides behind the shades in shame. Reggie is offended by the accusation saying that he didn't say anything to the press and, when he takes off his sunglasses, he has a black eye. Before leaving, Reggie advises Veronica to ask her old man.

Archie steps between Reggie and his dad

During Bulldogs practice, Reggie is again beaten by Munroe and his father is furious about it. While Reggie is threatened by his father, Archie intervenes by provoking Mr. Mantle, who does nothing but shout from the stands while Reggie works his ass on the field. Reggie is having none of it and tells Archie to mind his own business. Archie replies that his father has no right to treat him that way, but Reggie shoves his friend and prevents his father from hitting Archie too.

At Thistlehouse, Reggie goes to the party hosted by Cheryl in protest at the cancellation of the Back to School Party. Cheryl incites students against the new principal, Mr. Honey. Drunk, Reggie goes down to the basement because the bathroom line was too long but he is stopped by Cheryl before he can enter a secret room behind a gate.

At the party, Reggie again provokes Munroe by saying he is not welcome but Cheryl disagrees. After a while, however, the party is over by Sheriff Jones because there have been complaints about the noise.

Reggie opens up with Archie

On a bench in the park, Archie tries to make amends with Reggie and asks him about his black eye. Reggie replies that his father beats him for the stupidest thing ever since he can remember. Indeed, Reggie has always envied the relationship between Archie and his dad because he couldn't imagine how it feels to have a father who supports you in everything. When Fred died, Reggie wanted his father to be dead instead. Archie asked how he could help, and Reggie replies that he has already done enough by calling him out.

Reggie smashes his dad's car

"Bros for life"

The next day, Archie asks Reggie how his father reacted and Reggie states that his dad will no longer go to see practices and that they got to talk and Reggie finally told his father what he needed to hear. Reggie asks Archie if they are still bros, to which Archie answers "Bros for life" before hugging.[3]

Brainstorming session to help Archie

Reggie is lying on the couch in the school lounge while Archie says he needs to raise $40,000 for the gym renovation. Veronica, Betty, Kevin and Munroe are also there and together they suggest a way to make easy money. Kevin suggests a charity concert. Betty a cupcake bake sale, but neither is enough. And Archie refuses Veronica's money. Ronnie then offers a car wash outside Pop's, using them four "strapping young men" as a way to raise easy money.

Reggie and Veronica at the car wash

At Pop's, all the Bulldogs joined them for a shirtless car wash. Veronica is amazed by the large turnout at the car washing saying that every suburban housewife in the county is spreading the word about their sudsy fundraiser. Reggie replies that he has a deep fan base.

However, at the end of the day, they collected only $400. Veronica admits that she overestimated the financial pull of their pecs. Kevin proposes a Magic Mike Night at La Bonne Nuit, which Veronica suggests the guys go full monty. Archie is quite downhearted, but his friends say they will find a way.[42]

Making senior year memorable

At the school lounge, Reggie asks Archie, Betty, Veronica and Kevin if they want to trash the principal's office for Halloween night. Archie and Veronica look at him with a frown and Betty says they are seniors now. Reggie replies that it's precisely because it's their last year at Riverdale High they should enjoy it. To everyone's surprise, Kevin accepts the invitation. He hates Mr. Honey since he gave him a week of detention for going to the bathroom without a hall pass.

Reggie faces a harsh truth

After scolding Kevin, it's Reggie's turn. Mr. Honey is immediately very harsh saying that this prankster person is class clown that Reggie has created for himself makes it very difficult for his peers to take him seriously. In fact, unlike what he believes, they do not laugh with him. But of him. Mr. Honey guesses that Reggie hopes that if his friends laugh at his jokes, they won't notice the bruises left by his father's beatings. Reggie is stunned by what the principal said. It' s the first time that an adult touches the topic and puts him in front of the harsh reality. Reggie's punishment will be to clean the office and take the opportunity to reflect on what has been said.

Who vandalized Bella?

The next morning, Mr. Honey escorts Reggie out of the school and into the parking lot, Reggie finds Bella, his car, trashed in much the same way as he had reduced the principal's office. Mr. Honey says it's a real shame when people disrespect your property. If he were to guess the culprit, he would say that they were hooligans having some Halloween fun. Reggie thinks that it was Mr. Honey who trashed his car, but he's too distraught to say anything. Principal Honey offers to give Reggie a ride home, but he declines.[43]

Reggie stands beside Archie

Reggie stands beside Archie when he and Munroe talk to journalists and neighbors about their project for the El Royale Fight Club. To fight crime and juvenile delinquency, they want to turn the community center into a gathering place for kids and ask for help from the neighborhood. As Captain of the Riverdale Bulldogs, Reggie supports them as Big Brother, while the River Vixens will be Big Sisters for the kids in the center.

Flash forward to Spring Semester. During a biology class, Reggie is seated next to Munroe. Sheriff Jones enters the classroom to arrest Archie, Betty, and Veronica for Jughead's murder.[44]

Reggie and the Bulldogs go to the El Royale Fight Club with Archie and find the center completely trashed. Reggie comments that Andrews asked them to be Big Brothers, not soldiers in a territory war. Archie knows who the culprit is.

Honoring the late Mr. Andrews

The day next Thanksgiving, Archie puts up a plaque in his father’s honor at the community center. Reggie, Kevin, Betty, Jughead, Veronica, Munroe, Cheryl, Toni, Mrs. Andrews, Sheriff Jones and Alice Cooper attend. Mrs. Andrews assures Archie that his father would be honored and so proud of him.[46]

Physical Appearance

Reggie is a tall, attractive, and athletically built young man, his appearance is likely due to his position on the school's football team. He has straight black hair, dark brown eyes, and olive skin. His clothing choices are typically very casual, only a T-shirt and jeans.

Personality

Reggie embodies all the usual characteristics associated with the stereotypical jock. He isn't much of an intellectual and his biggest concerns seems to be football and sex, not just for himself, but his teammates as well. Like most jocks, he's socially and physically fit; the typical "cool" teenager. However, it's shown that Reggie had enough consciousnesses to ask Archie to not keep hurting his injured arm. He also comforted Archie after his dad was shot. However, his compassion is short-lived; ironically, and a cruel sense of humor, he pranked Archie by wearing a homemade black hood, while coming to Archie's home. Reggie also has a strong hatred of the Southside Serpents, if not Southsiders in general, even going as far to frame them when they were transferred to Riverdale High.

The hyper-masculine and aggressive attitude seem to be a natural response to his upbringing with an abusive father who regularly beats him. According to Mr. Honey, Reggie uses pranking and jokes to divert the attention of his peers from his pain and bruises due to his father's abuse. Since Reggie was taken aback by the assumption, there is likely to be some truth to it.

Relationships

Marty Mantle

What do you want me to say? Huh? That my dad hits me? That he beats the crap out of me over the stupidest things? That he's been doing it for as long as I can remember?
— Reggie to Archie[src]

RD-Caps-4x02-Fast-Times-at-Riverdale-High-73-Reggie-Marty

Mr. Mantle reproaches Reggie

The relationship between Reggie and his father, Marty, is violent and problematic. In fact, since childhood, Reggie has always been beaten by his father for every stupidest thing. Although over the years Reggie has become a strong football player, he is still quite intimidated by his father to fight back until he finds the courage with Archie's help. Marty has high expectations for his son and reproaches him every time Reggie does not give his best (or whatever he considers to be the best). Reggie is understandably scarred by this abusive relationship, but never managed to talk about it before senior year.

Archie Andrews

Main article: Archie and Reggie
Archie could've told Weatherbee the hood was mine. But he didn't. In the Book of Reg, that makes you a top-tier loyal badass. And we were talking today and decided if you want to keep the Red Circle going, we're here for you, dude.
— Reggie to Archie and Veronica[src]

RD-Caps-2x20-Shadow-of-a-Doubt-138-Archie-Reggie

The relationship between Reggie and Archie is ambivalent, and they can be described as frenemies. Being both very competitive, Reggie and Archie are often on opposite sides, especially in sports or as leaders of the Riverdale Bulldogs. Their strong personalities often clash when it comes to giving voice to their opinions. However, Reggie holds Archie's friendship in high regard, even when he would not be willing to admit it. Their bond is also solidified by their strong sense of justice and loyalty. For this reason, Reggie decided to join Archie's Red Circle group after acknowledging Archie's sense of friendship.

Moose Mason

RD-Caps-2x03-The-Watcher-in-the-Woods-21-Moose-Reggie

Reggie and Moose can easily be considered best friends. They are both very fond of sport and Riverdale Bulldogs' teammates. In addition, Reggie and Moose seem to share a passion for jokes and pranks, although sometimes they go too far and end up bullying other classmates like Jughead Jones or Dilton Doiley to the point of exasperating them. Reggie and Moose' friendship, however, can be deeper, as when Moose ended up in the hospital after being assaulted by the Black Hood and Reggie cheered Moose up when he returned to school after visiting him several times in the hospital.

Jughead Jones

Isn't it always some spooky, scrawny, pathetic Internet troll, too busy writing his manifestos to get laid? Some smug, moody, serial-killer-fanboy freak. Like Jughead.
— Reggie about Jughead[src]
RD-Caps-3x04-The-Midnight-Club-08-Jughead

The relationship between Reggie Mantle and Jughead Jones can easily be defined as a rivalry, as they have both shown a great amount of disdain for one another. This rivalry likely stems from Reggie's typical jock nature, to pick on outsiders and misfits, such as Jughead, who was subject to a lot of Reggie's bullying. Jughead and Reggie had been adversaries long before the start of the series as their dislike of one another seems well ingrained.

Josie McCoy

Reggie: "I get you're pretty much Beyoncé, but today, you're just like us commoners."
Josie: "I think your biceps can handle it, Mantle."
Reggie: "You trying to get me to flex?"
―Reggie flirting with Josie[src]
RD-Caps-2x17-The-Noose-Tightens-14-Reggie-Josie

Reggie and Josie's relationship is halfway between flirting and squabbling. Their similarly strong and contrasting personalities often lead them to tease each other almost every time they are together in the same room. Despite that, or maybe because of that, they have been making out at Nick St. Clair's party after getting high on Jingle Jangle. Moreover, Reggie and Josie joined force running for becoming student body president against other two teams formed by Archie and Veronica, and Betty and Jughead. Nevertheless, the true potential of a full-fledged relationship between the two remains to be seen.

Veronica Lodge

Veronica! I heard you got a face full of dairy. I've got some nuts to top off that shake if you want. [...] One question I gotta ask, as future Student Body President. What are the odds your dad's the first inmate in that prison he's building?
— Reggie harassing Veronica[src]

RD-Caps-3x03-As-Above-So-Below-49-Reggie-Veronica

The relationship between Reggie and Veronica is often poles apart. Reggie is usually making jokes about her, especially when he knows that his provocations could trigger reactions in Veronica that could ridicule her in front of others. On the other hand, Veronica has often referred to Reggie as a misogynist and scarcely tolerates his stereotypical jock personality, that she also referred to as toxic masculinity. Noteworthy is the incident when Reggie, after harassing her a bit, asked Veronica what were the odds that her father is the first inmate in the prison he was building, and Veronica grew so angry that she punched Reggie in the face and dropped him. Despite this incident, they have since become friends, such that Veronica has hired Reggie to work as a bartender at La Bonne Nuit, her non-alcoholic speakeasy. Given Archie's departure, their relationship has changed to romantic, culminating in the two kissing. After Archie's return, however, Veronica reprised her relationship with him, leaving Reggie with the doubt that he had only been a rebound all along.

Kevin Keller

RD-Caps-4x04-Halloween-17-Kevin-Reggie

Reggie and Kevin are up to no good

The relationship between Kevin and Reggie is undeveloped but friendly. Despite the common idea that jocks and gay students are natural enemies at school, Kevin and Reggie seem to get along quite well and often spend time together, whether it's going to watch a Drag Race, defending town from thugs from the Southside as vigilantes or just having a party, usually at La Bonne Nuit. Reggie and Kevin started spending more time together after starting to play G&G together and investigating their parents' past as The Midnight Club. Their friendship, however, can cause some trouble with school authorities when they decide to do some pranks.

Notes

  • As in the Archie Comics, Reggie has an ongoing rivalry with Archie Andrews.
