Murderer! We are the guests in this place. It is the snake that lives here. It was its right to protect its territory.
Nagaina to Nick[src]

Nagaina was a recurring character of Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. She was portrayed by Vanessa Rubio.

She was a gorgon and a member of the Pagan Tribe that came to Greendale with a carnival to resurrect their old god. She turned Rosalind and Dorcas into stone but their friends managed to reverse the transformation, and in retaliation, Roz beheads Nagaina with a sword.

Nagaina, Pan, and Circe pray to the old gods

Just outside the carnival, Professor Carcosa, better known as Pan, digs a hole as Nagaina, Circe and the remaining carnies gather around him. Nagaina reveals that she can smell the innocence on Harvey. Circe adds that she got the same feeling from Mary Wardwell. Before long, they are joined by Robin, who adds that like the two mentioned before him, Theo Putnam is also a virgin. Pan reveals that Roz is a seer and could pose a threat to them. Nagaina offers to tend to the matter of Rosalind. Pan then says that the earth is ready. Nagaina plants a flower, and Pan calls for the blood sacrifice. The carnies bring over an unknown man, and Circe slits his throat, causing him to bleed on the flower. The carnies then proceed to chant as Pan prays to the old gods.[1]

Nagaina teases Harvey

Nagaina joins Harvey and Mr. Kinkle at the breakfast table as they discuss his band and the loud levels of noise they make during practice. Harvey recognizes her as the exotic dancer from the carnival. She explains that’s where she met Harvey’s dad and later proceeded to spend the night, much to Harvey’s dismay. Mr. Kinkle kisses Nagaina and leaves for work. Harvey notices that she’s wearing his mother’s robe. She offers to take it off in front of Harvey, but he gets up and leaves. As he does, Nagaina questions if Harvey’s dad knows what he’s been up to and threatens to tell him.

Nagaina confronts Rosalind

Harvey, Roz, and Theo sneak into the carnival, which almost appears deserted. Roz plans to sneak into the snake charmer’s tent to touch something that belongs to her so that her cunning may reveal who Nagaina is and what she wants. Harvey and Theo play lookout. Inside her tent, Roz uncovers dead snakeskin all around. She is then confronted by Nagaina herself, who refers to Roz as the "sex-obsessed seer." Outside the tent, Harvey and Theo are confronted by Pan, who informs them that the carnival is closed for the day. Roz screams and runs from out the tent. As Harvey, Roz, and Theo leave, Pan, Nagaina, and Robin gather and prepare to celebrate Ostra.

The Phantasmagoria meets the Church of Night

In celebration of Ostara, the pagans go into the Greendale Wood to celebrate. Gathered in a clearing and wearing mysterious masks, they cross path with Sabrina. Then, they encounter the Church of Night. Zelda and Hilda invite Pan, Circe, Nagaina and the rest of their community to join them. Elspeth asks if they should say a prayer of thanks to Lilith, much to Pan’s surprise, who questions why they wouldn’t pray to their Dark Lord. Zelda tells Elspeth that no prayer is necessary. Pan explains that his coven prays to others.

Nagaina teases Sabrina and Nicholas

Sabrina and Nick ask Nagaina about Ostra. She replies their ways are little known to the outside world. She then asks Sabrina about their rites and if it's customary to fornicate on holidays. She can sense that Nick shares his carnal embraces with others rather than Sabrina and that his soul is shrouded in darkness and he reeks of sex.

Nagaina, Circe, and Pan discuss their findings. Circe refers to them as heathens who enslave animals as pets. Pan corrects her in saying that the animals are kept as familiars. He explains that they’ve stumbled upon a group of Satanic witches, but something is wrong with them. Nagaina explains that they’re weak. She can smell it.

Nagaina sucks Venom from Dorcas’s leg

After Dorcas is bitten by a snake, Nagaina takes her leg and sucks the venom out. Nick returns with the snake after cutting it in half. Nagaina is enraged, referring to Nick as a murderer and explaining that it was the snake’s home they invaded. With that, Nagaina, Circe, and Pan decide to take their people and leave. Zelda agrees, stating that they were there first. Pan retorts that the pagans were there first, before the false god. Before the Dark Lord, the old gods reigned, and the pagans worshiped them. Now, something has happened and their time has come around again.

Nagaina attacks Dorcas

Shortly after, Zelda sends Dorcas to give the pagans an offering as a form of apology. As Dorcas searches for the pagans, she is attacked by Nagaina. Afterward, Nagaina, Circe, Pan and the pagans plot to take away the witches' Hare Moon. Pan cuts into the cake, and Circe prays to Selene, goddess of the moon, as the coven eats the moon pie, simultaneously consuming the moon.

Nagaina, Pan and Circe give the witches an ultimatum

The pagans track the Church of Night to the Academy of Unseen Arts, where they perform a spell to infest the academy with snakes. Pan warns them that their time is over and that the old gods are returning, as well as the old ways. He tells them to either bow and pray to their gods or be killed. They have three days to decide. The pagans disappear, leaving behind a crazed Agatha and a petrified Dorcas.[2]

Nagaina asks if she should kill Melvin

Elspeth and Melvin forsake the Church of Night and pledge their allegiance to the pagans. Nagaina, Pan, and Circe welcome them with open arms. As his time approaches, the Green Man, the oldest of the gods, will need even more nourishment. And there’s no better sustenance than witches' blood. Pan proceeds to stab Elspeth in the neck, killing her. Melvin retreats into the woods. Pan allows him to leave so that he may warn the coven.[3]

Nagaina and Pan discuss how Sabrina infiltrated the carnival and killed four of their tribe. The great flowering of the Green Man is almost upon them. Nagaina calms him down and tells him that the blood of their lost tribe members nourishes the Green Man. Faustus Blackwood is dragged into the tent after he was found hiding in the shadows. He reveals that he cannot be killed as he bears the Mark of Cain. He’s come seeking an alliance. He wishes to see the Church of Night dead, same as them. They can kill the witches in their beds as they sleep. There are secret tunnels and a secret door that he can lead them in through. Pan agrees to lend Faustus some of his men to raid the Academy of Unseen Arts. They stole something from Faustus, and he wants to use the pagans to get it back.

Nagaina tracks down the fright club at Baxter High

Roz, Harvey, and Theo are then called into the Principal’s office. There, they are confronted by Nagaina and Pan. Harvey, Roz, and Theo hide in the library. Nagaina and Pan transform into their true forms and tell Harvey, Roz, and Theo about the return of the Green Man. However, one last thing is needed for him to rise; the innocent blood of a young virgin. Just as Nagaina is about to find Harvey, Robin arrives at super speed and whisks him, Roz, and Theo to safety. Mrs. Curtis enters the library, turns the lights back on, and asks if she can help Pan and Nagaina, who claim they were just leaving.

Nagaina and the pagans sacrifice Harvey to the Green man

They are taken to the carnival by the pagans, who kill Nick and Robin, and entrap Harvey inside the Green Man as his virgin sacrifice. Pan, Nagaina, and Circe remove the hoods from Roz and Theo so they can watch. Theo and Roz scream helplessly with their hands bound and mouths gagged. Harvey pleads out for help, but his prayers go unanswered. Harvey is killed as the vines of the Green Man stab into his chest. And with that, the pollination begins. Roz and Theo scream for Sabrina to come and save them, unaware that she is encased in stone.[4]

Death by Sword[]

Nagaina and Pan decide to sacrifice Mary Wardwell to the Green man

In this new timeline created by Sabrina, Pan starts to panic as no one in town has shown up to the carnival. Nagaina attempts to calm him, but he suspects something is afoot. Even more worrisome, they don’t have their virgin. Just then, Robin arrives with Mary Wardwell, bound and gagged. Pan welcomes Robin back with open arms as they prepare for the rising of the Green Man. Mary Wardwell is placed inside the Green Man as the pagans are seeded and offer themselves up as sacrifices after none of the townsfolk show up to the carnival. Nagaina, Pan, and Circe lead the chant for the Green Man to rise. The vines and branches tighten around Mary and consume her. However, rather than pollination, the Green Man decays, as it shrivels up and rots. As it turns out, Mary Wardwell is actually Pesta in glamour and Robin is Sabrina. Before glamouring herself as Mary Wardwell, Sabrina found the real Ms. Wardwell and erased her mind of the Spellmans being witches. Sabrina now warns Pan to take his carnival and leave Greendale. The Church of Night arrives as back up and chase the pagans out of Greendale.

Nagaina gets beheaded by Rosalind

Harvey and Roz both charge Nagaina’s tent. Roz wants to be the one to kill her. However, Harvey worries she’ll be turned into stone again. Roz insists that she can go in with her eyes closed and use her cunning to see, but Harvey takes matters into his own hands. Armed with a pickaxe, he enters Nagaina’s tent. However, without the use of his eyes, he can’t fight back. As Nagaina approaches Harvey, Roz sneaks up from behind and decapitates her with Prudence's sword. Harvey and Roz then bag up Nagaina’s head before sharing a kiss.[5]

Physical Appearance[]

Nagaina was a woman with tan skin, brown eyes, and dark brown hair, which she wore in dreadlocks. She usually wore dark clothing and had a snake tattoo on her body. Her true Gorgon appearance was more serpentine, with scaly skin, snakes in her hair, slit eyes and fangs.

Personality[]

Nagaina was a devout member of the Phantasmagoria. She was very seductive and tactless as she teased Harvey with the fact that he is still a virgin. She also teased Sabrina about Nick having sex with others but not with her. One of her most defining traits was her love for snakes. She was enraged when Nick killed one.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Limited Shapeshifiting: As a gorgon, Nagaina could partially transform her hair into living snakes which can then be used as extensions of her own person. Her skin and teeth also took on a more serpentine form.
  • Heightened Senses: Nagaina had a very keen sense of smell, being able to smell how Nicholas had recent sexual encounters, the fact the Church of Night had lost much of their power, and how Harvey was still a virgin. She even claimed that once she had a virgin’s scent, that person could not hide from her.
  • Snake Venom Immunity: Nagaina seemed unaffected by snake venom as seen when she sucked it from Dorcas' leg without side effects.
  • Petrification: As a gorgon, Nagaina had the ability to turn beings into stone with a single glance. She seemed to be able to delay this effect, causing someone to petrify at a later time after they'd met her gaze. Her petrifying gaze was also able to shatter a small mirror Harvey had tried using to avert looking at her directly.
  • Mesmerization: Nagaina seemed to be able to mesmerize people with her snake charming, as the audience of her snake charmer show was in a very trance like state.
  • Longevity: Nagaina is thousands of years old.[6]
