Mortal Limbo is a realm at the edge of death where the souls of unbaptized babies go when they perish, or the souls of people who died before their time. Deep within the Greendale Wood, there exists a threshold, a portal, to mortal limbo.
Madame Satan explains that the souls trapped there are lost in ways that they can't understand. It is impossible for witches to cross over into mortal limbo, as they have their own limbo, witch limbo; however, Sabrina Spellman, being half-mortal, can enter both. The trapped souls are also hunted by a monstrosity, a Soul-Eater that devours those it catches.
