Melody is a student at Riverdale High School and a former member of the band, Josie and the Pussycats; she and Valerie left after learning Josie secretly decided to become a "solo diva". She was mainly seen on the drums, during their practices and performances. Melody, along with Valerie, has since reformed their band with Veronica as the lead singer, taking up the new name "Veronica and the Pussycats".
Melody grew up in Riverdale, just like most of her classmates. Prior to her introduction into the series, she joined Josie McCoy's band, Josie and the Pussycats. The previous year, they won Rockland County's Battle of the Bands.
Melody is an attractive young woman with dark brown skin, black hair, and brown eyes. She's 5' 4" with a naturally slim figure. Beyond the overt Pussycat ears and the occasional cheetah print clothing, Melody has a very casual wardrobe, typically jeans and a shirt; nothing that would make her stand out in a crowd.
Due to a lack of on-screen presence, Melody's personality has not fully developed. However, she appears to be very loyal to the Pussycats, even in the face of adversity as a woman of color. She is also a loving and caring person, as she was there for her friend, Valerie, after her breakup with Archie. She appears to be a quiet person and doesn't seem to like confrontation, as she chose to stay out of Valerie and Josie's fight.

The relationship between Melody Brown, Josie McCoy, and Valerie Brown began before the start of the series. They were close friends, and together, the three of them made up the highly ambitious rock band, Josie and the Pussycats. They met and befriended each other while working at Power Records, where they used to practice together. One day, Josie came up with the idea of calling themselves the Pussycats after showing up to practice with cheap cat ears from the Halloween store. Valerie temporarily left the band after Josie and her had a dispute but they eventually worked it out and found their way back to each other. However, this dispute pales in comparison to the one that followed after Valerie and Melody learned that Josie was starting on her solo career and was leaving the Pussycats. Unfortunately, she and Valerie have not spoken to Josie since their breakup. Since then, Melody and Valerie reformed the Pussycats with Veronica, going by their new name "Veronica and the Pussycats".

- In Archie Comics, Melody is a Caucasian blonde often falling under the "dumb blonde" stereotype. In the comics she's occasionally named "Melody Jones", and the surname Valentine comes from the 2001 film about Josie and the Pussycats. The surname was later acknowledged by Archie Comics as canonical.
