Lourdes Luna

Lourdes Luna is a recurring character on The CW's Riverdale. She is portrayed by Ana Mercedes.

Lourdes is Hiram's mother and Veronica's grandmother.

Early Life[]

Lourdes moved to Riverdale from New York City in 1988, when her husband Javier pursued the possibility of getting rich by mining palladium. It didn't work out, so Lourdes worked as a waitress at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe while Javier and their son, Jaime polished shoes outside the diner. After her husband was murdered, Jaime, who changed his name to Hiram Lodge, took care of her.^[1]

Veronica's Confirmation Ceremony[]

Abuelita Lodge visits Riverdale for Veronica's Confirmation Ceremony. Her granddaughter Veronica asked her to be a sponsor during the ceremony, a role that Lourdes happily accepted. She arrives at the Pembrooke where she's welcomed by her daughter-in-law, Hermione, and other relatives. Once Veronica comes home, where all the women get together for girl-talk, she tells her family that her confession with Monsignor didn't offer much peace of mind. Hoping to help, they share their "things" which helped them get through the day and they advise Veronica to find her own. Tia then asks about Archie Andrews after seeing him a couple days before. Veronica tells them that he's her boyfriend and that he will be attending the ceremony. Archie is a local boy and he is as Hermione put it, "inocente", which is Spanish for innocent.

On the day of Veronica's confirmation, all her friends and family are in attendance for the event. She walks down the aisle in her white dress, singing "Bitter Sweet Symphony" alongside her friend Josie McCoy. Upon reaching the altar, Veronica is given a blessed wafer to eat and anointed by Monsignor Murphy as her abuelita is standing next to her. "Do you, Veronica Cecilia Lodge, renounce Satan and all evil works? And do you walk in the light of the Lord?" Before replying that she does, Veronica glances over to her parents with a look of uncertainty. Just behind the two of them is Archie, and in seeing him smiling back at her, Veronica gains all the reassurance she needs to go through with the ceremony.

Afterwards, during the party, Veronica takes Archie to meet her Abuelita who couldn't help but pinch Archie's cheeks given his handsomeness.^[2]

Veronica invites her grandmother to La Bonne Nuit, the speakeasy she runs, to discuss expanding her business in the production of rum. Veronica asks who is it that her father learned from. Hiram learned from his mother, as it is her Rum recipe that he’s using. Veronica asks for the recipe, which her abuelita is more than willing to share, though she asks about college, questioning if Veronica heard back from Harvard. On that note, Veronica reveals to her abuelita all the trouble her father has been causing her.

Veronica and her abuelita confront Hiram at his office. Abuelita Lodge slaps him for his shameful actions in picking fights with Veronica, who then reveals that abuelita shared the Rum recipe with her.^[3]

Raising Hiram[]

1988, Lourdes was married to Javier Luna and the two moved with their son Jaime from New York City to Riverdale after Javier learned of the existence of unmined assets of palladium, a precious metal. When the mine collapsed and the miners were sent home, Javier returned to shoeshine outside Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe, where Lourdes had started working as a waitress. Their grueling jobs, however, weren't enough by Riverdale's standards, and Jaime began to become embarrassed by their poverty to the point of blaming his parents for it. He even changed his name to Hiram Lodge, and started to work for a notorious local gangster, Vittorio Alto.

This involvement with criminal activities led on the one hand Hiram to enrich himself, but also to a total destruction of their family, which culminated in the murder of Javier. The man was shot in front of Pop's while he was starting his work day.

At the funeral, Lourdes and Hiram received condolences from Apollonia Gomez, the mother of Hiram's girlfriend, Hermione. Hiram, however, was not pleased to see her there as Apollonia had always expressed disdain towards Javier, that she deemed just a poor shoe shine. Apollonia apologized for her misjudgment. They also received condolences from Vito Alto, and Hiram realized by his way of talking him back into the business that Vito was behind his father's murder.

Some time later, Lourdes covered up the fact that Hiram had killed the hitmen sent to kill his dad when her son retired him with blood all over his face and shirt. Lourdes and Hiram celebrated with two milkshakes.^[1]

Hiram memorial service[]

Lourdes arrives in Riverdale to attend her son's memorial service following his brutal death. She is deviated but not surprised. She always knew his life would always end in bloodshed on a dark night. She then introduces Veronica to Heraldo, her godson, who takes good care of her. Heraldo hands over a guest list and reveals that Lourdes would like for Veronica to give the eulogy at her Hiram's service. Veronica is initially reluctant, but Lourdes can think of no one more fitting. And so, Veronica gives the eulogy, which brings tears to Lourdes' eyes, as she says goodbye to her son.^[4]

Mind controlled by Percival[]

Lourdes is mind controlled by Percival, who instructs her to kill Veronica. And so, she grabs a shotgun and heads over to the Pembrooke, where she takes aim and blows a hole through Veronica's front door, accusing her of having killed Hiram. Lourdes effortlessly makes her way inside and begins firing at Veronica, who flees into the back room. Veronica hides in the bathroom, locking the doors behind her and leaving behind a paralytic toxic on the door knob that leaves Abuelita paralyzed temporarily. Some time later, Veronica's toxins have worn off, as has Percival's spell. Abuelita apologizes for attacking her. She recalls hearing a voice in her head telling her to punish Veronica for killing Hiram and Heraldo, but she doesn't remember what happened after that.^[5]

Physical Appearance[]

Lourdes is an older Hispanic woman with olive skin, short, straight brown hair, and brown eyes. During her youth, she'd wear her hair in a curlier fashion.

Personality[]

Lourdes is a loving mother and grandmother. In her youth, she worked at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe to help support her family, as Javier's shoe-shinning business wasn't profitable. Now much older, she has a close relationship with Veronica. So much so that when she learned Veronica was being tormented by Hiram, she slapped him, as nothing is more important than family to her.

Trivia[]

Lourdes Luna is not a character from the Archie Comics. She was created specifically for the TV series.
It is unclear at what point Lourdes changed her last name from Luna to Lodge as she was referred to and credited as "Abuelita Lodge", and if she actually did it legally or not.
