Julian Blossom is a recurring character on The CW's Riverdale. He is portrayed by Nicholas Barasch.

Julian is allegedly Cheryl's and Jason's triplet brother, who was initially believed to have been consumed by Cheryl in the womb, according to Nana Rose at least. However, through a chimerism test, Cheryl learns that she didn't actually absorb her brother. Whether or not Julian ever existed or if he was simply a delusion as a result of Nana Rose's dementia has yet to be seen.

Julian is Cheryl's twin brother instead of Jason when the gang is sent back to the 1950s. He often antagonizes Archie in high school. After graduation, Julian enlisted, served, and died in Vietnam.

Character Description[]

Your classic high school red-headed bully. He's preppy, rich, and extremely entitled. Handsome, athletic, and cocky, he always gets his way, but in the rare times he doesn’t—like with Veronica—he makes life miserable for everyone around him. He often butts heads with his twin sister, but is also an antagonist to all of our teen characters, most especially Archie.[1]

Julian the Haunted Doll[]

Julian in a wheelchair

Suspecting that Thistlehouse is being haunted by Jason's ghost after finding a doll in the chapel, Cheryl conducts a séance with help from Toni and Nana Rose. Toni accuses Cheryl of moving the planchette on the Ouija board, but Cheryl insists this isn't her doing. Nana Rose confirms that it's not Jason or Cheryl moving the board; it's Julian. Penelope held three babies in her womb. Julian was to be Cheryl and Jason's triplet, but Cheryl absorbed Julian. Penelope was so devastated that she procured a doll and reared it alongside Cheryl and Jason until they were no longer infants, at which point Julian was retired to the attic.[2]

Cheryl drowns Julian

Despite throwing him away, Julian's doll seems to mysteriously make its way back to Thistlehouse. Fearful that the doll is truly haunted by her brother's ghost, Cheryl is reluctant to leave the house, only doing so after ensuring Nana Rose and the twins' safety by circling Julian with a barrier of salt, as it's believed to prevent evil spirits from crossing over. However, when Cheryl returns from school, she finds Julian in the chapel on Jason's lap. With Cheryl's extended family having arrived, she decides to get rid of him once and for all by drowning Julian in the tub, placing him underwater and laying a brick on top to keep him from floating up.[3]

Cheryl takes the chimerism test

Through her therapy session with Mrs. Burble, Cheryl learns of the chimerism lab, a test that shows whether a person absorbed a fetus in the womb by analyzing if they have one set of DNA or two. She takes the test and later reveals to Toni that the results read negatively, meaning that Cheryl isn't haunted and that she didn't consume Julian. However, there's still the matter of the weird happenings in Thistlehouse. Mrs. Burble enlightened Cheryl that most likely someone is trying to drive her mad, that someone ultimately being their mother.[4][5]

Season 5[]

When Cheryl shows Toni the nursery she made for her baby, Toni angrily refuses to bring her baby to Thornhill and accuses Cheryl of trying to trap her here like she did at Thistlehouse "with her two dead brothers," referring to Jason and Julian.[6]

Season 6[]

RD-Caps-6x09-The-Serpent-Queens-Gambit-127-Julian

Julian is possessed by Abigail

After Abigail was banished from Cheryl's body by Archie, Betty, Jughead, Britta and Nana Rose, her spirit was trapped in the Julian doll causing Rose to drop him after feeling a twitch. Cheryl then locks Julian/Abigail in a grandfather clock surrounded by candles to keep Abigail from ever escaping.[7]

Cheryl stares at Julian the doll, which started to assume more feminine traits to resemble Abigail, while reading a book and mocks Abigail that she will never possess her again. She then starts sweating and suddenly catching on fire, only to wake up and realize it was just a nightmare. Cheryl later goes to check on Julian to see if Abigail escaped after Darius was burned to death, but Rose tells her the doll hasn't twitched.[8]

Julian appears when Penelope goes to see the locked doll, but Cheryl catches her and knocks her out with a candleholder.[9]

Cheryl and Heather summon Abigail's spirit inside Julian the doll to ask her how they can stop Bailey's Comet from crashing onto Riverdale, and Cheryl promises to free Abigail from the doll if she cooperates. Julian is later used to summon Abigail again when Cheryl asks her how to break Percival's barrier to evacuate the town.[10]

Season 7[]

Pursuing Veronica[]

Julian walks the halls of Riverdale High School with his twin sister Cheryl, both wearing Blossom signature red. In Mrs. Thornton's classroom, Principal Featherhead introduces Veronica Lodge, a Hollywood starlet as a new student. Julian is immediately attracted to her, and so is Archie.

Julian and Archie contend for Veronica's attention

In the student lounge, Julian and Archie hurry to make room for Veronica on the couch between them. Together with Cheryl, Betty and Kevin they were discussing James Dean's tragic car accident. Veronica claims they were close friends, much to everyone's interest and Cheryl's disbelief. Veronica continues her story of how they used to go skinny-dipping and how James was bisexual. Julian and Archie are incredulous, having always seen him as a "very normal guy," but Cheryl freaks out and accuses Veronica of spreading filthy lies. When Cheryl leaves, Kevin asks about Sal Mineo, which Veronica confirms.

Julian drives Veronica home

On his way out of school, Julian gives Veronica a ride to The Pembrooke in his bright red spider. Archie is disappointed standing on the school entrance because he had hoped to walk her home, while Cheryl is angered to be left stranded.

The following evening, Julian and Cheryl read on chaise lounges in Thornhill's drawing room. Their mother enters the room, making remarks about their sullen, sulking mood. It's not like they are poor. Cheryl immediately replies that Julian is offended that Veronica ditched him for a date with Archie. Julian retorts, saying Cheryl feels unseated as Riverdale High's prettiest girl by insinuating if she ever was.

The next day, Julian is in Mrs. Thornton's class when they discuss the murder of Emmett Till and its aftermath. At the end of the school day, Julian and Archie are in front of the spider, and the jalopy waiting for Veronica to make a choice. However, the girl decides to walk home alone.[11]

Julian at Veronica's soiree

Julian persists in his courtship of Veronica, intending to go to the school party with her. At the Pembrooke soiree, where Veronica is auditioning boys to be her escort at the party, Julian shows his worst by insulting Archie's lack of culture in art as well as his low-income family, mocking the jacket he's wearing and wondering if it wasn't the one his father was buried in. Archie is about to lose his temper but leavers before stirring up a fight.

Julian asks Veronica to dance

On the evening of the Sock Hop party, Julian takes advantage of the fact that Archie has not accepted Veronica's apology and her request to start over after what happened at the soiree, and invites her to dance with him which she gladly accepts.[12]

Julian is having breakfast with his mom and sister when Penelope inquires about Cheryl's paintings of nude women. Cheryl is embarrassed by her mother's insinuations. She claims it's an art project and runs off to school. Penelope doesn't believe her and assigns Julian to find Cheryl a suitable boyfriend as she suspects she is developing "unnatural proclivities."

Julian talk Archie into dating Cheryl

In the school locker room, Julian suggests Archie go out with his sister Cheryl since it hasn't worked out with Veronica. To pique Archie's interest, Julian lies that Cheryl has had sexual experiences with college boys and is more open-minded than their female classmates. With Archie out of the way, Julian asks Veronica out. After an initial rejection, Veronica agrees to go to open mic night at the Dark Room when Julian tells her Archie is going with Cheryl. Julian, however, is bored with Clay's political poetry but is so excited by Toni's dance poem to Aphrodite that that night, he dreams of making out with Veronica naked in a garden.

Julian pursues Veronica

Dr. Werthers teaches a junior year sex education class, but the students are confused by his talk about flowers and bees. In the student lounge, Veronica invites the gang to a make-out party, arguing that instead of talking about sex they should start having it. The evening at the Pembrooke opens with some kisses paired by random numbers on an envelope, and Julian has to kiss Toni, with whom he remains paired at the end of the evening. Julian suggests they continue what they started, but Toni isn't into it. Rather, she'll let him drive her home in his nice car.

The next morning, Julian briefs his mother on their plan but they are interrupted by Cheryl, sporting a hickey on her neck, who has discovered their plan and intends to date Archie on her own terms.[13]

Julian the Bully[]

RD-Caps-7x04-Love-&-Marriage-53-Julian

Julian denies Jughead's accusations

Julian argues with Archie in the locker room because he and Cheryl had sex, which Archie denies. Julian attends dinner at Thornhill, where Blossoms and Andrews decide on the impending marriage between Archie and Cheryl. A few days later, Jughead and Veronica accuse Julian of taking advantage of Ethel in a lover lane at the same time Ethel's parents were being murdered the night of the Sock Hop. Julian arrogantly denies that because it would be unseemly for a Blossom to be with someone like Ethel. When asked why he would do it in the first place, he says, "cheap thrills." This angers Jughead, who punches him. Julian agrees to testify to Sheriff Keller, who then removes Ethel as a primary suspect. [14]

Julian bullies Dilton

In Keep Your Head In The Game, Julian practices with the rest of the basketball team. Coach Kleats has the team line for free throws up, and no one can leave until everyone has made at least one basket. But Dilton can't make a shot for his life. The coach, then, has the rest of the team run laps until he makes a basket. In the locker room, Julian harasses Dilton and, as punishment, locks him in his locker despite Archie trying to stop him. The next day, Dilton snapped due to his severe claustrophobia and cut off the heads of all the boys on the team to get "his head on the game" as the coach ordered him to do, using the heads of his teammates as basketballs. In Beehive, Julian and the other boys are attracted to Betty's new hairdo. He even asks Betty if he can carry her books to class. In My Better Half, Julian and the rest of the guys are in awe of Archie's accomplishment in dating both Betty and Veronica, and they are curious to know his secret. Archie reveals that all he needs are a strong coffee cup and to tell each girl three magic words, "You're my favorite," to which Dilton replies they are actually four words.[15]

Julian taunts Archie

Julian provoked Archie by throwing the paper cup on the ground during basketball practice, forcing Archie the welter-boy to pick it up. As he finds out that Archie works at the gas station at Pop's, Julian misses no opportunity to drive there in his car and get served. In the following days, Julian continues with his taunts in the student lounge. He claims that he has to train to surpass Fred Andrews' "lame score," receiving a punch in the face from Archie. Later, Julian tries to thwart Archie from joining the team, but Archie shuts him up by making a basket on the first shot.[16]

Julian taunts Archie and Kevin

Julian and other Bulldogs cheer loudly when Archie enters the classroom while the entire class whispers when Betty enters after rumors about their peep show spread throughout school. Later, Julian makes homophobic comments about Kevin Keller to Archie when Coach Andrews tells the team Kevin is a new Bulldog. In the locker room, Julian announces a proud woof for Roger, who finally made the dirty deed with Jenny Stevens in the back of his dad's Thunderbird no less. Between Roger and Archie's X-rated peep show with Betty, Julian suggests a rebrand as Horndogs. Fangs Fogarty shushes him when Julian tries to include his fling with Midge into the mix. Julian then teases Kevin. Archie tried to divert attention from his pal, accusing Julian of being a virgin. Julian, however, claims that his dad sent him to Twyla Twyst, a sex worker for his 16th birthday. He dares Kevin to do the same, and Kevin accepts.

Julian leads the Bulldogs against Reggie

Julian lashes out against his teammates after the Bulldogs lost to the Stonewall Stallions. Julian is not happy when Reggie Mantle joins the team due to his Korean heritage and plays dirty when Coach Andrews names both of them captains of their respective teams during a practice. In the locker room, Julian accepts Archie's invitation to go to Pop's since it is tradition and tells Dilton he can join them even if he's just the water boy. Julian invites the Bulldogs to a Blossom-sponsored event, extending the invitation to Reggie as well with some reticence after the coach's prompting him. At the event, Julian's dad and other guests make racist comments about Reggie that upset Archie. Julian imitates such behavior during practice by yelling racist slurs at Reggie that cost him a punch in the face from Archie.[18]

Halloween Scare[]

Julian defies the ban on Halloween

At the end of basketball practice, Coach Andrews reminds the Bulldogs about the ban on Halloween night. Teenagers aren't allowed on the street after sunset. Despite all of them having agreed, in the locker room, Julian urges his teammates to disobey. Fangs backs out of it because he's playing at the ghost show at the Babylonium. Archie and Reggie are not interested in Julian's wilding. Moreover, Reggie promised his parents he wont's cause trouble in Riverdale. Julian tells his teammates to meet in the school parking lot at sunset on Halloween Day before setting out to bark with his friends.

Julian smashes jack-'o-lanterns

At dinner, Penelope tells Cheryl that she can have her annual Halloween party with the River Vixens in the corridor instead of her bedroom to avoid any sexual temptation. Julian is disgusted by the thought of it. On Halloween night, Julian and four other friends dressed in skeleton black hoodies scamper around Julian's car, hitting jack-o'-lanterns with a baseball bat. Later on, Julian spots Reggie going home alone and challenges him to join them to raise hell in Greendale. At some point, the car went off the bridge and into the Sweetwater River.[19]

Julian wakes up from the coma

After the car accident, Julian and the other Bulldogs are pulled out of the river by Reggie. While most of them suffer only minor bruises, Julian is in a coma. During a visit at the Riverdale General Hospital, Cheryl cries and begs Julian to wake up because she misses him even though they don't usually get along. Julian wakes up to tell her to shut up, especially when she calls his laugh horsey. Later, Julian and Cheryl listen to the Bulldogs' game against the Stallions on the radio. Riverdale is led to victory by Mantle the Magnificent, the ad-interim captain. [20]

To Be or Not to Be

Julian made a full recovery and is back to school. After Kevin and Betty's dramatic scene from Tennessee Williams's The Cat on the Hot Ton Roof for Mrs. Thornton's class, the lesson is interrupted by Principal Featherhead, Sheriff Keller and Julian and Cheryl's dad, Mayor Blossom. They accuse Mrs. Thornton of being a Communist and of indoctrinating her students. As she is relieved immediately of her duties, her class will be temporarily taken over by Penelope Blossom. Julian and Cheryl exchange a frustrated look at the thought of being taught by their Mom. In the student lounge, the gang discuss what just happened and Veronica tells them all about the Red Scare in Hollywood and how McCarthy fabricated accusations to limit freedom of speech and beliefs branding off as Communist lots of people in the showbusiness under pretense they were Russian spies indoctrinating Americans via television. The following day, the gang meets famous actor and Veronica's dad, Hiram Lodge. He will lecture the class during Julian's own dramatic scene. Mr. Lodge heavily criticizes Julian's rendition of Hamlet's soliloquy, shocking class when he mentions that it is about Hamlet contemplating suicide. Later that same week, Julian is in the classroom while Archie and Betty acts a dramatic scene from Arthur Miller's The Crucible and again for Veronica's Cordelia's soliloquy from Shakespeare's King Lear under the supervision of the new teacher, Geraldine Grundy. That evening, Riverdale Boy Scouts burn stacks of Pep Comics in from of the school under the instruction of the Mayor, Principal and School Counselor as Clay and his friends watch in horror[21]

Julian argues with Archie

Kevin and Clay have written a musical; Archie The Musical! Although they and friends are juniors, as Archie points out to them, the musical's leads are on the first day of their senior year in the song Monday, Senior Year. Unfortunately, each of them has criticisms about the lyrics with Reggie and Jughead quitting immediately. Kevin asks Archie and Julian to stay behind to rehearse for I Want, and tells them that Julian will be Archie's understudy. The song about Archie's conundrum between Betty and Veronica, basketball, or poetry makes Archie uncomfortable, and he feels even more confused because the song should be about what he wants, not about his doubts. Julian, on the other hand, is eager to get Archie out of the way to have the lead role, adding to their long-standing competition.

Julian plays Archie

At rehearsals, in which Julian actually plays Archie, Julian gives his best performance. However, Principal Featherhead refuses to approve the musical and suggests they do Oklahoma! instead. Kevin lashes out at his firends for how they have found ways to criticize every single detail instead of supporting him and Clay. As Kevin storms out of the room, Clay informs their frieneds that Kevin's parents are getting a divorce. The group of friends gathers around Kevin for a grup hug the next day in the music room after singing Finale (Our Song) together. A song about the end of an era at Riverdale High. [22]

Julian is with his friends at Pop's to watch the Miss Riverdale Teen Queen pageantry televised on RIVW. Julian complains that they took the swimsuit promenade out of the contest. Archie and Jughead tease him about wanting to see his sister in a swimsuit. Julian ponders whether Jughead doesn't have some comics to read. All the boys are glued to the screen, especially when Ethel sings and is crowned Miss Riverdale 1955 to everyone's surprise by Mrs. Cooper.[23]

Sex Talk[]

Julian's ready for the stag film

At the boys' locker room, Julian announces that he got his hands on a stag film from a buddy of his at Stonewall Prep. He asks whose game, assuming that Fangs must be horny given that Midge was admitted into the Sisters of Quiet Mercy. They can hang a blanket up in his parents' barn, but the only glitch is that they need a projector, at which point, he looks to Kevin and Clay. Given that they work at the Babylonium, he's hopeful they can get a projector. Kevin and Clay agree, so long as they're allowed to attend as well. Julian agrees to their terms but tells them not to expect it to be like the wrestling movies they like to watch. Later that night, the boys, Veronica, and Betty gather at the Babylonium to watch the stag film. However, just when the boys were getting excited, Betty discovers that her sister Polly is the half-naked leading lady, prompting Veronica to order Clay to shut off the screening.

Threatened by Archie and Reggie

The next day, Julian enters the locker room and reveals that he watched another stag film he got from his buddy at Stonewall Prep after Betty shut down their Babylonium screening. For $2, he offers to rent Archie and Reggie both the projector and movie, which they can watch in the privacy of their own home without interruptions. Archie and Reggie confront Julian the following day when they find out the "stag film" he sold them was just a gay wrestling video. Not only does Julian refund them, he reveals another stag film he watched, this time about a guy with two girls. He gives it to them for free this time.[24]

In the student lounge, Julian teases Reggie and Archie about having sex with Twyla Twyst at the same time. Reggie tells him to keep his voice down, but other students, including Betty, who leaves the room offended, hear Julian continue his teasing in disbelief that Archie wants to go for a second time.[25]

RD-Caps-7x18-For-A-Better-Tomorrow-29-Julian-Cheryl

Julian and Cheryl are threatened by their dad

Julian tells Cheryl to hurry or he will leave her to walk to school. At the front door, they see their father with General Taylor. Clifford explains he came to deliver an important item. Julian and Cheryl follow their father to his study, where Clifford shows them the statue of Moloch, a pagan deity to whom children are offered in sacrifice. Clifford warns his children not to test him if they don't want to meet that end.

At school, Dr. Darryl Doiley shows his class a film on the effect of an atomic bomb detonated on a town. Later, Julian and his friends discuss the effects of nuclear weapons and how to best avoid them and survive an atomic blast and its radiations. Julian takes the opportunity to tease Archie's concerns, and his idea to outrun an atomic bomb hopping on his hot-rod headed West.

A few days later Julian is sitting next to Nana Rose while the family is having breakfast in the grand hall and FBI agents burst in to arrest Clifford and Penelope on charges of colluding with the Russians in Project Moloch, the study for P-bombs made from palladium mined from the Blossom factories.[26]

Leaving Riverdale[]

RD-Caps-7x19-The-Golden-Age-of-Television-17-Cheryl-Julian

The future of the Blossoms

At Thornhill, Nana Rose steps up as primary parental figure for Cheryl and Julian now that Clifford and Penelope have been arrested. It's up to them to ensure that the Blossoms rise from the ashes. Cheryl concurs and already knows what her first order of business will be. Jughead and Tabitha reveal the gang the truth about Riverdale. They are from the future and are experiencing an alternate reality. Jughead and Tabitha offer to show them VHSs with their real lives. The group does not believe much in this story although Archie and then the others also decide to see the film. Julian, however, has no intention of it because in that other reality he is only a doll. Stuck in 1950s, Archie and the gang are shocked by the dark and violent life they lived and decide to resect their memory and keep only the good memories at a private screening at Babylonium. [27]

RD-Caps-7x20-Goodbye-Riverdale-184-Reggie-Julian

Julian in the Sweet Hereafter

Julian attends Cheryl and Toni's Beefcake meet Cheesecake Art Event at the Dark Room. Here Narrator Jughead and Betty from the future discuss what will happen to their friends and fellow Riverdellians in the years to come. Jughead describes Julian as "a bit of a lost soul," and tells Betty that, after graduation, he enlisted, served and died in Vietnam.

Julian and the rest of the gang gather at Thornhill for an afterparty, where Archie reads one of his poem on their shared adventures throughout the years. Years later, when Betty passes away, Julian is among the many friends she meets again in the Sweet Hereafter.[28]

Physical Appearance[]

As a doll, Julian bears a surface level resemblance to many men of the Blossom family, primarily their signature red hair. Julian the doll wears a little blue sailor suit with a red necktie and golden monogrammed "JB" on his chest. In 1955, Julian is a tall young man with short curly red hair, green eyes and fair skin. He typically wears signature Blossom red in the form of polo shirts, varsity jackets or accessories such as neckties when wearing other colors or details like red stripes on a blue cardigan, plain slacks, and (often red) sneakers.

Personality[]

Julian is a snooty and spoiled boy often competing with Archie, especially when they both start pursuing Veronica. Julian can be vindictive even with his sister Cheryl, whom he does not mind teasing if it amuses him - though he can express kindness to her on occasion. Julian likes to flaunt his wealth and culture at the expense of others - a habit that tests the patience of everyone around him Like the rest of the Blossoms, Julian is entitled and overbearing in getting what he wants on his terms and isn’t above referring to others he dislikes, particularly Reggie, via disparaging and/or patronizing terms, as he believes almost everyone to be inferior to him as a son of Riverdale’s wealthiest family. However, under his outward bully attitude, Julian hides an insecure personality, smothered by his parents and willing to be part of the rest of the group. Jughead once described him as a bit of a lost soul.
