After my mother died, I was taken in by a group of women who raised me. A powerful coven in Greendale. I'm not just Wiccan, Cheryl. I'm... a witch.
— Heather to Cheryl[src]

Heather is a recurring character on The CW's Riverdale. She is portrayed by Caroline Day.[1]

Heather is a girl from Cheryl's past who she was best friends with during her adolescence. Heather returns to Riverdale after getting an email from Cheryl and reveals that she's a witch from a powerful coven who worships the goddess Hecate.

Character Description[]

A librarian in Greendale and Cheryl's long-rumored junior-high sweetheart. After tracking down Heather on social media, Cheryl gets in touch with her, much to Nana Rose's disapproval. Then, when Heather re-enters Cheryl's life, she does so with secret knowledge that may help Cheryl understand her emerging powers better.[1]

Early Life[]

When Heather was in junior high, she befriended Cheryl Blossom. The girls grew immensely close and often had sleepovers. What started as friendship, soon grew into love. Unfortunately, one night, Cheryl's mother caught them in bed together. Penelope grew furious and banished Heather from Cheryl's life.[2] Heather moved away but wrote letters to Cheryl, which Penelope intercepted and kept from Cheryl.[3] Shortly after moving to Greendale, Heather's mom died in an accident, and she was taken in by a coven of witches.[4]

Heather worships Hecate

Heather and Cheryl become reacquainted and catch up for the time they've lost. Heather's mother tragically died in an accident not long after they moved to Greendale. Changing the subject, she asks about Cheryl's love life. As it stands, both Cheryl and Heather are single. Unfortunately, she can't stay much longer, remarking that it's almost the witching hour. But before she goes, Cheryl reveals that she's turning Thornhill into a privately owned library and asks for Heather's assistance. So, Heather sets an intention for Cheryl's new library by reciting a spell whilst burning sage. Studying Wicca and worshiping the goddess Hecate helped Heather self actualize. Later, Heather reads Cheryl's cards. Her first two cards are The Queen of Wands and The Lovers, which represents a new strength or ability discovered and Cheryl's yearning for connection, intimacy, and love. However, her final card is The Tower, which promises disaster, carnage and war.

Heather invokes ghosts

Heather and Cheryl receive a surprise visit at Thornhill from Tabitha, who is experiencing a haunting at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe. Heather has experience with communicating with spirits and offers to help Tabitha make contact with them and help them move on. And so, the three of them head down to the diner, and Heather invokes the spirits, who reveal that they're bound to the diner and that they must bear witness to the battle that approaches between good and evil. When Gilda mentions a ghost train, Heather explains that it's an engine that grants its conductor great power and dominion over the realm of the living and the dead. After helping Tabitha, Heather and Cheryl return to Thornhill, where Heather reveals that she's a witch and that she suspects Cheryl is one too. Cheryl hasn't used that word to describe herself yet but she's been dancing around the word for months, if not years. She then reveals to Heather that she's pyrokinetic and asks Heather to teach her the witch's way.[4]

Heather and Cheryl at the shop

As Cheryl searches for damning proof against the Pickens as a favor to Archie, Heather comes across a letter that references the Malleus Maleficarum, one of the most powerful arcane texts in existence, which was stolen from the Blossoms by the Pickens. Heather plans to steal it back and also believes this is the perfect opportunity for her to teach Cheryl a new spell, specifically becoming "unseeable." To turn unseeable, all Cheryl needs to be able to do is hold her breath and keep a level head as she bends the spectrum of visible light around herself while quietly reciting a spell, which she does while sneaking into the shop behind Heather, who distracts Percival long enough for Cheryl to recover the Malleus Maleficarum from the back of the shop. Afterward, Cheryl confesses to Heather that the library was merely a ruse to get her to spend more time with her, though she now offers Heather the opportunity to leave whilst she can, but Heather insists on sticking around.[6]

Heather cures Baby Anthony

Heather meets Toni for the first time when she stops by Thornhill to reveal that she and Fangs are getting married. Heather asks if Cheryl wants to talk about the bombshell that Toni just dropped on her, but Cheryl becomes defensive, insisting that she's fine and accusing Heather of creating false narratives about her feelings towards the upcoming wedding. However, Cheryl later asks for Heather's help after she accidentally curses Baby Anthony. As a registered midwife and night nurse, Heather has experience with crying babies and gives Baby Anthony a calming tonic. Once they return to Thornhill, Heather tells Cheryl to never cast a spell while in an emotionally volatile state, as it always backfired. That said, she asks if Cheryl is now willing to talk about why she's so upset. Cheryl reveals that the wedding announcement did in fact send her on a spiral, but Heather is at the center of it as well. She likes Heather, but she doesn't want to get hurt again. While Heather understands her apprehension, they're getting a second chance, which Heather wants to make the most of. And so, after attending Toni's bachelorette party, Cheryl shows Heather the painting she made of them together, which leads to the two of them hooking up.[7]

Heather knows of a necromancer named Sabrina

As a wedding gift to Toni, Heather and Cheryl devise a plan to kill Percival. According to the incantation from the Malleus Maleficarum, Cheryl should be able to project her powers across town, on to Percival, so long as she focuses on his poppet doll. And so, she and Heather recite the spell, which Percival counters with a spell of his own to redirect the attack to Nana Rose, who is burned alive in her wheelchair. Fortunately, they manage to save her. After learning from Betty that Percival is after Baby Anthony and that he intends to use the Stockade of Legarius on Betty, they instead use it on him and lock him in a vault at the Babylonium. Unfortunately, during the wedding reception, he escapes and enacts the final plague, which is the death of all firstborns, killing Archie, Toni, Fangs, and many others. Fortunately, Heather believes that she knows someone who can help them, specifically a necromancer, named Sabrina.[8]

Heather tells the ladies about the Sweet Hereafter

The gang arrange a fake funeral for the dead to deceive Percival before convening at Thornhill, where they intend to resurrect their friends with Sabrina's help, as she specializes in necromancy. Upon her arrival, Sabrina and Heather explain that they have less than a day to bring back their friends, as the resurrection ritual they're attempting must be performed within three days of a person's death, otherwise the body becomes too corrupt to animate. In order to perform the ritual, they will all first need to officially become witches, as it requires a coven of six. After completing all three steps to becoming witches, they select Jughead as the first to be resurrected, but Sabrina fails to convince him to return to his body, and instead, with Jughead's consent, her boyfriend Nick temporarily inhabits Jughead's body.

Heather asks Cheryl about the Sweet Hereafter

With Nick's help, they come up with a new plan, but they will have to cross over into the Sweet Hereafter themselves with help from the Ferryman to bring their loved ones back. When this fails as well, Sabrina comes up with another plan to simply force the gang back into their bodies, but Heather warns them that souls may return incomplete, or infected with some kind of malignancy. Those returned, may also resent them for the rest of their lives. Nevertheless, the ritual involving Cheryl's Phoenix powers works and the dead are returned. However, to Heather's surprise, Cheryl didn't just bring back her friends, she brought back Polly and Jason as well.[9]

Heather tells Cheryl about the comet

Heather has checked various texts for any and all references to Bailey's Comet and has learned that they've been making an incorrect assumption, but before Heather can elaborate, Jason interrupts, armed with a bow and arrow, asking if Cheryl wants to play. When she blows him off, he becomes upset and shoots Heather in the shoulder with an arrow, then taking aim at Cheryl, who flees until realizing that she has no other choice but to kill Jason. Cheryl then patches up Heather and admits that Sabrina was right that she shouldn't have resurrected Jason, though Heather suspects he was controlled by Percival. Cheryl then asks Heather what was she about to reveal regarding the comet before Jason attacked. Heather explains that Bailey's Comet isn't arriving at nightfall, rather the following night. Later that night, after the gang defeats Percival, Heather informs Cheryl that Percival performed a final spell to change the trajectory of the Bailey's Comet and have it hit Riverdale.[10]

Heather performs spell

Heather and Cheryl summon Abigail in hopes that she can help them stop Bailey's Comet from obliterating Riverdale. Abigail recalls Thomasina telling her how comets are made from ice and instructs Cheryl to project her phoenix fire as soon as the comet reaches earth. As for Percival's binding spell, that will require greater effort. Therefore, in exchange, Abigail would like more than just her freedom. She wants a final evening with her beloved Thomasina. After Cheryl and Toni both agree to act as vessels, Heather recites the soul transference spell, allowing Abigail to possess Cheryl's body and Thomasina to possess Toni's body. Later that evening, after Cheryl has returned to her body and Abigail has informed them how to save the town, Heather tells Cheryl that should she succeed in melting the comet, she's going to head back to Greendale and resume her life, as she realizes that Cheryl and Toni are soulmates; Heather believes that Cheryl and Toni's fate is written in the stars and transcends time.[11]
