Passing on the Family Business[]

Season 1 Episode 1 The River's Edge Fred 1

Fred wants Archie to join him

Fred owns a successful construction company called Andrews Construction. He hopes that one day Archie will work alongside him, eventually passing it down to him all together. Until then, he will continue to run the company himself, which involves all sorts of maintenance, such as seasonal hiring. He is surprised to learn that Hermione is back in town looking for just that. If it were up to him, Fred claims he would give her the job, however, it is not as simple as it may seem. He has clients, thus having the wife of Hiram Lodge, who is currently on trial for fraud and embezzlement, as his book-keeper isn't the best look.

Fred confronts Archie on his recent decisions

After receiving a call from Coach Clayton, Fred confronts Archie on about these claims because of Archie's previous statement that he couldn't work for the company due to the fact that he would be playing football. He wants to study and write music. Archie goes on to speak on how this past summer has changed him, however, Archie is obviously holding back. Noticing Archie's hesitance to be truthful with him, Fred grows aggravated. While he respects Archie's decision to pursue his passion in music, Fred is upset that Archie wasn't being honest about his latest change in plans, as Archie's decisions have consequences. He wants Archie to know that whatever path he takes, he should be confident enough in it that he doesn't have to lie about it.[1]

Archie claims that he couldn't sleep, so he went for a jog. Fred asks if Archie has something on his mind, as lack of sleep is often the result of a heavy conscience. Archie claims that it is simply due to the murder of Jason Blossom, to which Fred insists that he halt on the late night jogs until they catch the murderer.

Fred talking to Archie about his recent troubles

After witnessing a tension-filled disagreement between Archie and Jughead the following evening and then Archie coming home with a black eye the subsequent day, Fred is compelled to ask Archie if he had gotten into a fight with Jughead. Archie explains that he had actually gotten into a fight with Reggie and that the disagreement between him and Jughead was over a girl. Archie is vague, only saying that he wanted to do something, and it was the right thing, but the girl said it would ruin what they had. Fred first acknowledges that this is the first honest talk they've had in a while before telling Archie that he has to do the right thing no matter the cost.[2]

Season 1 Episode 3 Body Double Fred 2

Fred grounding Archie

Fred confronts Archie as he returns home that night after learning from Sheriff Keller that he was at Sweetwater River on July 4th despite Archie previously telling his father that he would be on a road trip with Jughead. They could've gone to the sheriff together, but Archie claims that he didn't want to drag his father into it, which was an error in judgment, thus the reason to as why he's being grounded for two weeks. He has to be in the house, every night, by 7:00 PM.

Despite grounding Archie, Fred catches him sneaking back into the house after a night at rehearsal with the Pussycats. Archie explains his reasoning for sneaking out, but this does little to calm Fred, which leads to a heated argument as he won't allow Archie to attend the Taste of Riverdale event. Archie is upset that his father doesn't understand his interest in music, as Fred would have pardoned him if he had a football game that night, but he won't do the same for his music. Fred doesn't respect it nor does he take it seriously.

Season 1 Episode 4 The Last Picture Show Jughead Fred

Fred confirms he won the contract

Over at Andrews Construction the next day, Fred confirms that he won the contract to tear down the Twilight Drive-In. He apologizes for having to demolish it, as he knows how much it means to Jughead, who was trying to convince Fred into at least holding off on the demolition for one week until he can track down the anonymous buyer and convince them not to destroy it. Sadly, Fred cannot afford to give him that time. The drive-in's demolition is a big contract for his company. It could also lead to more jobs. Hearing this, Jughead grows increasingly angry. He reminds Fred how he already put his father out of work, so he might as well do the same to another Jones, though Fred had to let Jughead's dad go because he was stealing from the work site.

Fred receives a visit from Hal and Alice Cooper, both of whom insists that Archie and Betty stop spending so much time together. The relationship is bad, and their respective behavior reflects that, or so Alice claims. However, Fred denies these claims. Archie's a good kid, he says, before dismissing the Coopers.

Alice wants to let law enforcement take over, but Archie pleads with his father to come up with a better solution. Fred soon realizes that for Alice, it is more about her crazy vendetta against Archie than Ms. Grundy's predatory behavior. As the tension rises, Ms. Grundy offers to quit her job, and Fred and Alice both agree that she'll have to leave town too. Afterward, Fred drives Archie home. Before going inside, he tells his son that none of it is his fault, as the two share a loving hug.[4]

Once home, Fred enters Archie's room only to discover that he is not alone. He is joined by Valerie Brown, who Fred recognized her as a member of Josie and the Pussycats. He enjoyed their performance at the Taste of Riverdale. Fred exits the room, but makes sure to keep the door cracked.

Fred only has enough money in the bank to pay his guys for two more weeks. The last time he let one of his guys go, it didn't end too well, plus, the trust they have is worth everything, and he'll never compromise that. Fred explains that he is waiting to here on a recent bid for the new development, where the Twilight Drive-In used to be. The construction could put him back in a good place. However, he doesn't know who the buyer is, but with Mayor McCoy handling all the arrangements for the buyer, the next best thing would be to present her with the bid. So, he invited Mayor McCoy over for dinner, hoping he could win her over, but he wants Hermione's assistance in doing so, to which she agrees. Fred has a polite dinner conversation with Myles about his career and the kids before moving on to his presentation. With his plans, Andrews Construction would stimulate the local economy. It's a win for the entire town. Mayor McCoy agrees with his proposal. She even would have liked to awarded Fred with the contract, but the buyer is already in the process of accepting another bid.

Fred offers FP his job back at Andrews Construction after a brief discussion with Archie and Jughead, in which Fred admits that he could have reached out sooner. After a long day at work, Fred, FP, Archie and Jughead celebrate with a night out at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe, where they reminisce about their youth, a time when he and FP spent a summer fixing up a DW bus, that later became known as "The Shaggin' Wagon." They also recall the band they had formed senior year of high school called "The Fred Heads." They were terrible, but it didn't stop the girls from flocking in. Fred reveals what really happened

Following Archie's jam session with FP, Fred explains his side of the story that led to the fall-out between the two of them. Fred explains that FP was a mess, who was stealing from the company and selling stuff on the side. Fred gave FP many chances, bailing him out multiple times. Fred claims that he did the best he could, but when someone is drowning, you can try to save them, but not if they're going to drag you down with them. Archie replies: "And who cares if Jughead ended up drowning too?"

Season 1 Episode 7 In a Lonely Place Archie Fred 1

Fred forging Jughead's work documents

With FP's whereabouts unknown, Fred, Archie, and Betty go down to the Sheriff Station, where Jughead is being held as a suspect in Jason Blossom's death. Despite knowing the legal ramifications he could suffer, Fred lies to Sheriff Keller in Jughead's defense, claiming that Jughead was working for him the week of July 11th and that he can provide documentation to support it. With no evidence against him, the police are forced to let Jughead go. FP is just arriving as they are leaving the station. He threatens to tear Sheriff Keller apart for throwing accusations at Jughead. Fred attempts to stop him, as he will only make it worse, but FP claims that he would do the same for Archie.

Fred returns to Andrews Construction that night and forges Jughead's work documents. He realized that Jughead shouldn't have to suffer for his father's mistakes.[7]

Season 1 Episode 8 The Outsiders Fred (1)

Fred tells the boys to call it a night

Fred enters Archie's room to tell him and Jughead that it is about time for them to settle down for the night. He immediately notices the ripe spell circulating within the room. He needs to get a good nights sleep as Andrews Construction will be breaking ground on the SoDale project. He apologizes to Jughead as he knows that it is a sour spot, though Jughead is fine with it so long as they built something beautiful in its place. Fred doesn't know about beautiful, but it is going to be big.

The next day, Fred's crew quits on him after they receive a better offer from Clifford Blossom, in which he promised them two years of work.

Season 1 Episode 8 The Outsiders Fred (3)

Fred tells Archie about the troubles he's facing

After losing his crew, Fred makes some calls, hoping he could borrow a few crew members from known affiliates but to no avail. Just then, Archie returns home from his date with Valerie. Fred informs him of the setback of the project due to Clifford taking his crew, to which Archie tells him that whoever would choose the Blossoms over him is crazy. However, there are more pressing matters. Fred confesses that he hasn't been as forthcoming with Archie about the severity of danger the company was facing. It's been in trouble for a long time. Big jobs are too few and far between, and it's only getting worse as the days go on with hemorrhaging cash and overdue bills. It was never supposed to get this bad. He worked his hardest to build the company, but in one false step, he could lose everything.

Season 1 Episode 8 The Outsiders Fred and Cliff

Fred confronts Cliff

Fred embarks on a mission to confront Clifford on stealing his crew in an effort to halt construction. He pulls up at Thornhill and blocks Clifford's drive-way as he attempts to leave. Clifford explains that it's not personal, just that the land of the SoDale project belonged to his family. They founded their maple empire on it, and now they're in a process of trying to reacquire it and buy it back, but the mysterious buyer stole it right from under them. So, since he can't go after the mysterious buyer, he'll go after Fred. The way Fred's boss has done his secret deals has led Clifford to believe that he has a limited amount of funds. Admittedly, this is a great plan, but Fred informs Clifford that in the process of bleeding out the buyer he is also bleeding him out as well, which has messed with his business and livelihood. No amount of money will stop Fred from coming after Clifford with everything he has.

Season 1 Episode 8 Outsiders Sheriff Keller, Fred, Jughead, and Archie

Fred reports the attack to Sheriff Keller

After confronting Cliff, Fred returns to the trailer to be met with a surprising new construction crew in the form of Archie, Jughead, Kevin, and Moose, all of whom volunteer to help keep construction on schedule until he can find a new crew. Initially hesitant, Fred agrees to allow the boys to help. As the day comes to an end, the boys return to the trailer, and Fred thanks each of them for their assistance. Just as things are headed in the right direction, Moose is attacked on the SoDale work site by two thugs, who also damaged some of the equipment. Moose is warned by the guys that as long as construction continues, they'll return to do more damage. When Sheriff Keller arrives at the scene of the crime, Fred explains that Moose caught two guys destroying his equipment with a crowbar. Fred accuses Clifford Blossom of being at the center of the attack since he made it abundantly clear that he wanted the project to collapse, though Sheriff Keller has his doubts. Archie suspects that it also could have been the work of the Southside Serpents, who are angry after being kicked off of their land, but Jughead disagrees since the Serpents never bothered him when he worked the drive-in.

Season 1 Episode 8 The Outsiders Fred FP (2)

FP and Fred outside the Whyte Wyrm

Fred receives an unexpected call from FP the following night, who alerts him that Archie was stirring up trouble in a known hang out of the Serpents. Fred arrives outside the bar and demands that Archie get in the truck as he talks with FP, who is a Serpent. Like Archie, Fred begins to believe that the Serpents were behind the attack, but FP denies any claims of involvement. He'd never do that after all Fred had done for Jughead. However, FP is sorry to hear about Fred's troubles, in which he had no crew or cash, so FP offers to ask around about the attack, though he is sure that Fred will bounce back, as he always does. Fred then heads back to the truck only to discover that Archie is gone.

He's been thinking, what if he has a kid someday that hated music and instead wanted to build houses and buildings like his grandpa. Archie expresses how cool he thinks that would be. Building things are Fred's legacy, which makes it Archie's too.

Season 1 Episode 9 La Grande Illusion Fred learns the truth

Fred learns the truth

Fred learns from Hermione that she and Hiram are the anonymous buyers and that Andrews Construction is working for Lodge Industries. Fred explodes as she attempts to explain her reasons for deceiving him. Had she told him the truth, he never would have gotten involved, which Fred agrees with as he does not do business with criminals. Hermione is attempting to turn Lodge Industries legitimate, but she can only do that by partnering with businesses like Andrews Construction. Hermione confesses that while that is the reason for Clifford Blossom stealing his crew, it is Hiram that sent the two attackers, having found out about their affair. She understands that Fred is angry, but she pleads with him to stay on the project because she is not able to start over if Fred abandons it. However, he is so frustrated that he exits the trailer before answering.

Season 1 Episode 9 La Grande Illusion Fred in his kitchen

Fred warns Archie against being bought

The following night, during dinner with Archie and Jughead, they receive a surprise visit from Cheryl, who complements Fred on his hair cut and says that he is "looking extremely dilfy." Cheryl's reasoning for being at the Andrews house is to properly thank Archie for agreeing to escort her to the banquet. She does so by gifting him with a brand-new guitar, which Fred suggests that he return to the Blossoms, as they are using Archie, and he is nothing more to them than dirt under their shoe.

After having some time to think about it, Fred decides to stay on the SoDale project under a few conditions: everything that they do from this point forward will be legit and that his stake is 20%, a percentage that he is not willing to negotiate on. Fred is tired of people like the Lodges using his family as pawns. Lastly, Fred ends their romance. They will be nothing more than business partners after that.[9]

On the front porch, Fred explains to Archie that the divorce papers and legal documents will be done, and they can then proceed to put the entire unfortunate situation behind them within the week. Archie questions if the reason for Fred's sudden urge to finalize the divorce stems from his relationship with Hermione, to which Fred replies that he had already ended that, as it was a bad idea for them to work together as well as being romantically involved. Fred tells Archie that sometimes you just got to rip the band-aid off. As he was getting ready to pick up his bag and leave, Archie mentions to him as an alternative that he can try and fix things. Fred explains to his son that they're past that point now. Archie reveals that he spoke to his mom last week and that she didn't mention any of this to him, to which Fred reminds Archie that it's been two years now since his mother moved out and that she wanted him to be the bearer of bad news instead. Archie offers to come with him, though Fred dismisses the idea, telling Archie that this is between him and his mother.

He is even more shocked to learn that Alice was the one who put them up to it. They claim that when they broke into the trailer, there wasn't a gun and that it was planted there after they left. Fred reminds just how serious the predicament is. Mary then informs Archie that he entered FP's residence illegally, meaning whatever he did or did not find would be inadmissible in a court of law. Archie doesn't care about the consequences of his actions, but Fred does . FP may have ruined Jughead's life, but he is not going to allow the same to happen to his son.

Season 1 Episode 12 Anatomy of a Murder Fred arguing

Fred and Archie get into a fight

The following night, after getting off the phone with Principal Weatherbee, Fred explains to Archie that their principal is concerned about Jughead and the altercation between him and Cheryl earlier that day. Weatherbee suggests that Jughead finish the rest of the school year from home. FP could possibly spend decades in prison, potentially the rest of his life, so Fred explains that they need to think of a long term solution, and unfortunately for Jughead, it isn't with them. Fred isn't Jughead's legal guardian, and his priority is keeping Archie safe, from whatever trouble seems to follow the Jones family where ever they go, whatever they do. He then comments that maybe Archie should move to Chicago with his mother, which Archie claims that he isn't even considering.

Fred and Archie return to the truck, where he lectures Archie over his recent involvement in Jason's Blossom case. If he keeps going down this path, he will end up dead, Fred says.

That night, Fred and Archie say goodbye to Mary as she prepares to leave for Chicago.[12]

As they all are, Fred adds.

Fred learns that Hermione fired the crew

Fred arrives at Andrews Construction to the sight of a new crew working on the SoDale project. He immediately enters the trailer to confront Hermione about this recent change in crew without first consulting him. Hermione let the Serpents go because the Mayor and Sheriff Keller are cracking down on the Serpents especially. However, this does little to ease Fred's anger. The Serpents stood by them when no one else would. But with Hiram's release and upcoming return to Riverdale, Hermione can't allow the project to be affiliated with criminals. A unilateral decision is not up to Hermione to make on her own. Fred reminds her that they are partners. Having said that, Hermione moves on to her next point: buying Fred out of the project. She regrets dragging him into a situation that he never wanted to be a part of. Before he exits the trailer, Fred tells Hermione to write him up an offer, and he'll consider it.

He had a DUI following the separation with Mary and a limited amount of funds, which isn't enough to support Jughead, so he will be staying with a foster family on the south side.

The next day, Archie returns home irate over an incident at school where someone wrote on Betty's locker in pig's blood. Betty was getting threats, and Jughead was being thrown into a snake's pit, making Archie feel helpless. Fred attempts to explain to him that all he can do sometimes is show up, which is all he's been doing, but it hasn't made any difference.
