Bernardo Bixby^[1] is a recurring character on The CW's Katy Keene and a guest starring character on Riverdale. He is portrayed by Ryan Faucett.

Bernardo is a firefighter at Engine 141 in New York City, and Jorge's ex-boyfriend.

Bernardo visits Riverdale at the request of Katy's friend Veronica Lodge. He's there to help Sergeant Archie Andrews set up a fire department. At the Fred Andrews Community Center, Archie, Bernardo and Corporal Eric Jackson are standing in front of the volunteers, young men from Archie's RROTC team at Riverdale High School. Archie welcomes them on the first day of fire academy and introduces Bernardo from Engine 141 in New York City. Bernardo asks who has had previous firefighting experiences. Since no one raises their hand, Bernardo begins his lesson. The first rule is that they must work as a team. Nobody goes into a burning building alone. A team is only as strong as its weakest link. In his crew, there are no weak links. They then begin the training with push-ups, rope, and weight balls.

After the workouts, the guys relax sitting in the gym. Corporal Jackson tells how Archie once tried to feed a stray dog outside the outpost. According to Eric, it looked more like a wolf. Bernardo asks what size they are talking about, and Eric replies that it was big while Archie is certain it was just a dog. Eric goes on to tell how Archie put a hand through the fence and the dog almost bites his arm off. As they laugh, a homeless man with a shopping cart walks into the gym. He thought the place was shut down. It was, but Archie reopened it. Now it's going to house a new volunteer fire department. Archie asks the homeless if he lives in Sketch Alley, which he does. Name's Earl. They haven't had a fire department in a long time. A lot of building burned because of it. Archie promises that things are changing, and that they will make town better for everyone. Earl heard that talk before and say that he hopes Archie can back it up before leaving the gym.

The following day, Bernardo questions Cadet Burns on the back draft, or the phenomenon of O2 rapidly entering an oxygen-depleted environment causing explosion. Since Cadet Burns responds correctly, his reward is 30 more pushups. Before he can move on to the next question, a man walks into the center asking if they are the fire department. Trying to be, Archie replies. The man shouts that the pool hall's burning down. The team immediately rushes to help. Earl, the man they met the day before, is trapped in the burning building. Archie immediately rushes into the building to rescue him, kicking the door open.

Bernardo leaves Riverdale after his two-days visit, coming back to New York.^[2]

Physical Appearance[]

Bernardo is a man in his late twenties with a muscular built, broad shoulders and strong arms. Bernardo has a squared, clean-shaven face, short brown hair and brown eyes. When not working as a firefighter, Bernardo replaces the suit with casual clothing like neutral v-neck shirts, pants and hoodies.

Personality[]

Bernardo is a caring and selfless man who works as a firefighter in New York City. His physical appearance generally associated with the ideal of masculinity makes him an object of attention, especially in nightclubs, to the point of causing insecurities in his partner, Jorge. Bernardo, however, does not exploit his attractiveness and has shown that he is interested in relationships that go beyond superficiality.

Bernardo is a supportive boyfriend who listens to the needs of his partner. When Raj ignored Jorge and offered Bernardo a place in his film, he refused saying that the talented actor in the couple was Jorge.

The romantic relationship between Bernardo and Jorge is at an early stage. Jorge came from a secret relationship with Buzz, a closeted man, and didn't have many expectations. But Bernardo managed to win his heart when he immediately accepted to hang out publicly and showed no problems with Jorge's drag alter-ego, Ginger. When Jorge expressed that he had insecurities about his gender identity and that he didn't feel "masculine enough", Bernardo assured him that he's sexy and talented and although some gay men hit on him at nightclubs, Bernardo is not interested in them. After a threesome with Jorge's ex Buzz triggered even more insecurities in Jorge and Bernardo started to not feel enough for his boyfriend, they break up.
