You and Toni are forever soulmates... Your fate is written in the stars. It transcends time.

The relationship between Cheryl Blossom and Toni Topaz, commonly referred to as "Choni" among fans, began as a brief rivalry but quickly turned into a life long romance. They grew up on opposite sides of town, with different lifestyles, and while that sometimes caused conflict in their relationship, it was the much more personal history between their two families that eventually led to their break up after two years of intense dating. While they both remained in love during their seven years apart, too much had changed for both of them to be able to make it work when their paths crossed again. Though they tried to move on with different partners, they were fated to reunite, and did in the final merged timeline, where they spent their lives together in California.

Cheryl and Toni's first meeting

Toni and Cheryl meet for the first time at a drag race, when they both attempt to fill the role of flag girl. Toni says she usually does the honors, but Cheryl brushes her off, claiming that she was born for this moment. Toni lets her have it, as Cheryl takes to the center of the road, asking both drivers if they are ready before waving her flag, signaling the start of the race.[1]

Toni, Jughead, Sweet Pea, Fangs and the other transfers from Southside High arrived at Riverdale High following the closing of their school. They are greeted by Veronica and the welcoming committee. However, Cheryl and Reggie interrupt and approach the registration desk, protesting the Serpents's arrival with insults and claims they're a determent to the school's above average GPA. Toni is offended by Cheryl's choice of words and tells her to say it to her face, a challenge Cheryl is happy to accept. But before they can truly face off, Archie and Principal Weatherbee step in.[2]

Toni trying to comfort Cheryl

Toni confronts Cheryl in the girls' restroom at school after overhearing her tell Jughead about Betty and Archie's clandestine Christmas kiss outside of Thistlehouse. When she asks if Cheryl at least had a reason for suddenly deciding to expose this secret now, Cheryl replies by introducing herself as "Cherry Bombshell" and stating that she needs no reason to do what she does - she simply does it. However, Toni sees beyond her defenses, touching her arm and suggesting that Cheryl tell her what is actually bothering her. Toni's touch sets off Cheryl's internalized homophobia and gay panic, and she orders Toni to get her "sapphic Serpent hands" off of her before she storms out, leaving an amused and intrigued Toni behind.

Cheryl comes out to Toni

The following night, Toni approaches Cheryl at the Bijou after Fangs bailed on her on their plan to watch Love, Simon together. Cheryl is visibly troubled, and Toni can see that, looking past her mean girl facade and asking if she is alright. Cheryl replies that she is at the movies alone, while also trying to stay away from her mother, who has turned their house into her sexual playpen. Hoping to lift Cheryl's spirits, Toni suggests that they see the movie together, considering that neither have a date. And after the movie, they stop by Pop's for milkshakes. Cheryl says she usually never cries during movies because real life is tragic enough, but she couldn’t help but sympathize and relate with the character from the film, who struggled to come out as gay. She tells Toni that people in town viewed her as a loveless monster, but this isn't true. She loved a girl named Heather who she was best friends with in junior high. She used to sleepover at Cheryl's house every weekend until one night when her mother caught them in bed together and called her deviant. Toni assures Cheryl that she is neither loveless nor deviant, and that she is sensational and deserving of love.[3]

Toni meets Cheryl's mother

Cheryl invites Toni over as her emotional support for her father's upcoming will-reading. As they are deciding on a wardrobe for the occasion, Cheryl's mother barges in and demands to know what is going on. Toni introduces herself as a friend of Cheryl's from school, but Penelope isn't interested in her, turning her attention to Cheryl and telling her to be downstairs before the guests arrive before leaving again, not making a good impression on Toni. The will-reading begins soon thereafter, at which point, it is determined that the second half of Clifford's fortune will go to Cheryl alone. Just as she approaches the podium to speak, she is interrupted by Clifford's estranged twin brother, Claudius Blossom and faints. The following night, once Claudius is situated, Toni joins Cheryl's family for dinner, where they discuss his journeys as a sailor; he came upon an Island named "Lesbos", in reference to Cheryl and Toni's relationship. He claims it was the most beautiful and natural place on earth.[4]

Saving Cheryl from the Sisters[]

Cheryl and Toni sharing a bed

With her integration into Riverdale High going so well and a newly-formed friendship blossoming with Cheryl, Toni tries out for the River Vixens. Impressed with her routine, Cheryl immediately grants her a spot on the squad and invites the girls over for a mandatory slumber party. That night, Cheryl reveals her true intentions behind inviting them over. It wasn't to celebrate. In actuality, Cheryl is terrified of being alone at the house with her uncle Claudius and her mother, as she is convinced they are conspiring against her. Later, as Cheryl and Toni lay in bed together, Cheryl shares that she didn't want to invite the other girls to the slumber party, but she knew that her mother would never allow her to only invite Toni, which is what she craved. Just as the two of them are about to kiss, a loud thud can is heard outside Cheryl's room. The girls rush into the hallway to find Nana Rose unconscious at the bottom of the steps. Fortunately, she survives the fall.

Later in the week, Toni stops by Thistlehouse to see Cheryl. However, Penelope tells her that Cheryl is gone to an all-girls boarding school in Switzerland. She claims that Cheryl had left the night before, though Toni isn't buying it. In reality, Cheryl had been admitted into the Sisters of Quiet Mercy for conversion therapy.[5]

Realizing that something isn't quite right, Toni goes to Veronica and Josie for help in finding out what truly happened to Cheryl. The three of them begin their investigation with questioning Cheryl's mother at Thistlehouse, only to get stonewalled by her. Nana Rose, back from the hospital and at the mercy of Penelope and Claudius, manages to get to a phone and call Toni at school, informing her that Cheryl is at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy. With Kevin's help, Toni and Veronica sneak into the Sisters of Quiet Mercy through an old tunnel to rescue Cheryl. Toni eventually finds her in the room with other patients watching an anti-gay propaganda movie. She tells Cheryl that they've come to rescue her, which surprises Cheryl, who had given up hope and isn't used to others caring about her. She runs into Toni's arms and then the two of them share their first kiss before Veronica comes to warn them that they need to leave right away. The three of them are chased through the orphanage by nuns, but they eventually meet Kevin at the surface and escape. The next day at school, Toni asks Cheryl what her next move is going to be. Cheryl explains that if revenge is a dish best served cold, then her mother and uncle better brace themselves for a polar vortex.[6]

Toni gives Cheryl a pep talk

At cheerleading practice, Cheryl and Toni sing their solos for In for Carrie the Musical. At play practice, Cheryl says that there have been whispers that she's not fit to play the role of Carrie. She proves everyone wrong by singing the song, Carrie, and Toni adoringly claps for her. When it's revealed that Penelope won't let Cheryl participate in the play, Kevin tells Toni that he thinks that Cheryl's on the gym bleachers. They talk about how Cheryl can't stand up to her mother anymore, and that she's not the same person she used to be. Toni reassures her that she still is, and tells her that she's not done playing Carrie, inspiring her to confront her mother and get emancipated.[7]

Saving Toni from Penny[]

Cheryl saves Toni

When Penny Peabody kidnaps Toni during riot night, Jughead calls Cheryl for backup. Cheryl emerges from the woods in her hunting cape with her bow and arrow, demanding for her girlfriend's release. Penny and the Ghoulies give her up but they tell Jughead that they will go to war with the Serpents if they don't agree to sell drugs with them on the southside. Back at the Whyte Wyrm, Cheryl is with Toni and the Serpents when deciding what to do about the Ghoulies. They put it to vote and decide that they'll go to war with the Ghoulies. After Jughead sacrifices himself to the Ghoulies to avoid war, Cheryl and Toni, along with Betty, Archie, Veronica, and the rest of the Serpents go to Penny Peabody's hiding spot. Cheryl engulfs Toni in a hug, as FP carries an unconscious Jughead out of the woods.[8]

Toni suggests Cheryl join the Serpents

Cheryl finally gets emancipated from her mother, and now lives in Thistlehouse with Nana Rose. Just as Cheryl is heading out to visit Toni at the Wyrm, Penelope stops her and reveals that Hiram is planning on raiding the Serpent's precious bar. Cheryl calls Toni to give her the heads-up and then goes to Jughead's trailer, to get him and Archie. They all sneak out and seek shelter at the Andrews'. The following day, Archie heads a protest to ensure the Serpents can remain at Riverdale High. After it's success, Toni comments that Cheryl looks good in a Serpent jacket, and suggests they should make it permanent. After it's announced that the Serpents will indeed be staying at Riverdale High, Cheryl and Toni embrace in celebration, before they meet with the other Serpents, where Jughead gives Cheryl a red leather jacket, officially making her a Southside Serpent as Toni looks on fondly.[9]

Junior Year[]

Cheryl opens up to Toni

Cheryl and Toni return to Riverdale after riding cross-country on motorcycles with for the summer to celebrate with an epic End-of-Summer pool party at Thornhill. At the party, Cheryl confides in Toni about her suicide attempt the previous year and how much she wishes she could save Archie in return. The party is cut short when the time comes for them to devise a plan to invade Ghoulies territory after learning that they took Hot Dog, who the young Serpents manage to successfully retrieve with the help of Cheryl's archery skills.[10]

After agreeing to help spread the word about Veronica's speakeasy, Cheryl and Toni also assist her with getting leverage against her father by sneaking into the basement of the Whyte Wyrm and taking several photos of the Jingle Jangle lab as proof of Hiram's corrupt business. When they arrive on opening night, Veronica thanks them for their help because she couldn't have done it with her "favorite power couple."[11]

Gryphons and Gargoyles[]

Toni and Cheryl celebrate with a kiss

Cheryl and Toni have begun playing Gryphons and Gargoyles under Jughead's leadership. They barge into the trailer and inform him that Sweet Pea and Fangs are off the deep-end and managed to get into the arsenal, from where they retrieved Cheryl's archery equipment. Toni and Cheryl were getting intimate in their tent when an arrow shot by Sweet Pea and Fangs went right through it. Sweet Pea and Fangs explain that they were practicing their aim for the next quest as they now want to go off board and take G&G into the real world. While other groups may be doing it, Jughead has no desire to and what he says goes as he is the Game Master and even challenges Cheryl to shoot a can off his head with an arrow. They then head inside the bunker and resume the game, ultimately advancing forward.[12]

Toni and Cheryl brace for impact

Cheryl nurses Toni back to health after she and all the other River Vixens collapse and began seizing in the hallway. She's makes Toni tea and the Blossom family physician is on call should Toni feel another spell coming on. While Toni insists that she's fine, she worries that what happened to her may be contagious. However, there is nothing that will keep Cheryl away. She even invites Toni to move in with her. Toni agrees, so long as she's the big spoon. The two then proceed to kiss. Later, after Cheryl and Veronica fail to stop Hiram and Hermione's plan and the town goes into lockdown, Cheryl returns home to cuddle with Toni as they await the consequences of what's to come.[13]

Exiled from the Serpents[]

Cheryl and Toni breaking rules

The crime rate has risen since the quarantine over five weeks ago. There has been a series of daring cat burglaries, the culprits being none other than Cheryl and Toni. The two return to Thistlehouse with their stolen goods after "Stealing from the rich to give to us", as Cheryl puts it. As they celebrate their successful heist, Toni tells Cheryl she loves her, and Cheryl returns the sentiment before they collapse onto their bed full of money in laughter. While the quarantine has since been lifted from over Riverdale, the town has yet to regain its pep. As the girls walk through the halls of Riverdale High holding hands, they are instructed to separate by Moose, acting under RROTC command; the school's new rules are to keep physical contact to a minimum, though they completely ignore Moose and Kevin's order, referring to them as "crypto-fascist" before proceeding on their way.

Cheryl and Toni are kicked out of the Serpents

Returning from his trip with Archie, Jughead calls a meeting of the Serpents at Sunnyside Trailer Park after it came to his attention that at least one of them has been selling Fizzle Rocks. Starting that moment, there will be no selling or doing of drugs , with no crime of any kind being tolerated and from this point on, anyone that breaks the Serpent code will be exiled permanently. Cheryl calls out Jughead for abandoning the Serpents to run off with Archie, and Fangs wonders how they're supposed to support themselves. Later, Jughead finds out that Fangs is the one that was selling drugs because he didn't want to ask for help to pay for his mother's illness, and Jughead lets it slide so long as Fangs doesn't tell anyone about. But he apparently tells Sweet Pea, who tells Toni, who tells Cheryl, who then proceeds to breaks into the Pembrooke with Toni and steal a Glamourge egg. She leaves a calling call in the form of a lipstick mark on Hiram's paintings, leading to another meeting, during which Jughead demands that both Toni and Cheryl turn in their jackets. Toni can't believe this is happening, reminding him that she is a Serpent by blood and that this isn't something he can take from her. Furthermore, they call out his hypocrisy for letting Fangs stay despite breaking the rules, so Fangs is kicked out as well.[14]

Forming the Pretty Poisons[]

Cheryl and Toni get their SAT scores

Cheryl and Toni lay in bed, simply enjoying each other's company and the fact that they're laying in an actual bed. While Toni doesn't miss the mud or cold of Sunnyside Trailer Park, she does miss the Serpents. They both receive simultaneous alerts for their SAT scores. After finding out that her mother is trying to prevent her from attending Highsmith College, the school all Blossoms go to, due to the fact that she's a lesbian, Cheryl commiserates with Kevin, who's struggling with keeping his relationship with Moose a secret, as he's still in the closet. In a misguided attempt to help Kevin, Cheryl reads a build item over the school PA system, revealing that an RROTC member is in the closet. Toni confronts a clueless Cheryl about what she just did, telling her to get some perspective, sharing how her uncle hated the fact that she dated girls. That's why the Serpents, acting as a surrogate family, were so important to her. She understands that Cheryl's mad at her mom and even more upset that she's not going to Highsmith college, which, for the record, Toni could never get into or afford. Highsmith college was Cheryl's legacy, and the Serpents were Toni's. Now they're not. Cheryl apologizes profusely, telling Toni she's the most important person in her life and she'll do anything to make everything right.

Cheryl gives Toni her interview

With a mega plan in the works, Cheryl takes her first step by blackmailing her mother with the photos that Toni takes of the Maple Club. With this, Cheryl demands that her mother step down from the Highsmith college board and revoke her ban on Cheryl's admittance. Penelope initially refuses, but when Toni questions how her clients will feel once she and Cheryl have published their names and photos, she relents. Cheryl then returns to Highsmith college, where she gives up her interview spot with the Headmistress to Toni, introducing her as a future photojournalist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Cheryl then offers Toni a few words of encouragement and reminds her that this is only step two in her mega plan. Step three is apologizing to Moose, who ended up coming out to his dad on his own, even though his dad didn't suspect the blind item had been about him.

Toni and Cheryl form a new gang

After taking down the Gargoyle Gang, led by Marcus Mason, Moose's dad, Cheryl and Toni return to school, where Cheryl expresses that she wants to repay the favor for all that Toni has done for her. Call it step four of her mega plan. They enter a classroom to about half a dozen female students. Cheryl informs Toni that it's her new gang if she wants it to be. Cheryl knows how much Toni misses being a Serpent as they were her family. So, she found some other girls who were looking for support or community, or even fisticuffs. With this gesture, Cheryl would like to start a new family. Toni is extremely grateful, referring to Cheryl's gesture as the most badass and romantic thing she's ever done. Peaches 'N Cream inquiries about the name for their newly found family, to which Toni falls on the name "Pretty Poisons." Pretty by day, poison by night.[15]

Toni scolds Cheryl for attacking Sweet Pea and Fangs

Just outside Thistlehouse, Cheryl teaches an archery class to the Pretty Poisons. Toni returns not long after to inform Cheryl how Jughead attempted to convince her to rejoin the Serpents. He had the audacity to call them a vanity project, which still angers Toni, and so she plots on a way to put him in his place. However, Cheryl takes the matters into her own hands and attacks Sweet Pea and Fangs. Later, Toni confront Cheryl after learning that she and the other girls jumped Sweet Pea and Fangs. Cheryl was sending them a message as the Serpents needed to know that the Pretty Poisons aren't to be trifled with. Toni is furious. The purpose of their gang isn't to air out Cheryl's petty grievances or personal vendetta. It's for protection and community. So now she questions who's truly leading the gang, her or Cheryl. Cheryl says that it's Toni's gang, and in that case, Toni tells Cheryl to never deploy the Pretty Poisons that way without first consulting with her.[16]

Tensions continue to rise

Cheryl and Toni get into a small fight over the much larger fight that took place at school between the Poisons, Serpents, and Farmies, which landed Toni in trouble with Weatherbee. While Cheryl may wear many hats, when she puts on that Poison jacket, she's representing the gang. Toni warns Cheryl to proceed with caution, as she doesn't want to suspend anyone for loose cannon behavior. Least of all her own girlfriend. Cheryl agrees as that would makes hosting Pretty Poison's meetings at Thistlehouse incredibly awkward, she remarks. Cheryl knows that they don't have another headquarters for use, moreover a pool, allowing her to use this as leverage. Toni meets with Veronica, who offers the Poisons a job as security of the speakeasy. When Toni invites Cheryl to join them later that night, Cheryl elects to stay home, and the tension between them continues. [17]

The Break-Up[]

Cheryl and Toni have sex

At Thistlehouse, Cheryl surprises Toni with a trip to Quebec. She thought since Toni’s been working so hard with the Pretty Poisons, it might be good for the two of them to get away. So, Cheryl booked them a spring break ski trip. Unfortunately, Toni and the girls had already planned to road trip to Sugar Lake. Cheryl is upset, but before Toni can fully explain, she gets called into work. Cheryl bakes scones for Toni and brings them to work as a peace offering, but finds Toni is not working, but rather singing and fooling around with Veronica and the Poisons. In an effort to get Toni's attention, Cheryl shows up at casino night at the speakeasy, and makes a show of casing the joint. After closing, Cheryl sneaks into La Bonne Nuit and attempts to break into the safe, but she is caught in the act by Toni. Toni saw Cheryl casing the speakeasy earlier, but she also knows that Cheryl wanted her to know it. Toni slowly approaches Cheryl, unzips her jacket and kisses her. The two then proceed to remove their clothes and have sex. Cheryl sits in a chair blindfolded as Toni gives her a lap dance.

Cheryl and Toni break up

Afterward, they get dressed and decide to talk about the tension building in their relationship. Toni thinks that Cheryl has a problem with the Poisons because for once she's in charge of something. Cheryl denies this. She's upset because Toni seems to spend all her time with them instead of her. While Toni loves Cheryl, she can’t spend all her time cooped up in Cheryl’s bedroom. Cheryl states that it’s their bedroom, but as Toni points out, it doesn’t feel like that at all. It’s entirely Cheryl’s space. Toni suggests that they may have moved in together too soon. In that case, Cheryl tells Toni to move out and then she herself leaves La Bonne Nuit.[18]

Toni vs Cheryl

Cheryl is cast in Heathers: The Musical, for which Toni joins as the choreographer. She wants to start with some simple steps, but Cheryl, still upset over their breakup, isn't interested in working with her. Toni's attempt at being professional is undermined by Cheryl, who along with Betty and Veronica, begin their musical number, Candy Store. Toni and the Poisons join in on the number, which upsets Cheryl, leading to a dance off of sorts between the two, who go back and forth on stage, until Cheryl shoves Toni aside to win as the song ends.

Toni and Cheryl make up

Cheryl is enraged after seeing Toni in an all-red outfit, immediately informing her that she's wearing Cheryl's signature color, giving Toni until first bell Monday to clear every trace of herself from the school. Toni instead breaks out in song and finds Peaches 'N Cream and Sweet Pea, whom she takes to the auditorium and tells to get undressed in an act of pain and revenge. But before anything can actually happen, Toni thinks of Cheryl and imagines her watching what she's about to do, and she can't go through with it. Later, Toni visits Cheryl at Thistlehouse to fight for their relationship because she doesn’t even know what they’re fighting about. Toni then asks what love was like in Cheryl's family. It was all or nothing. Pure adoration or distilled hate. Thornhill was a den of shadows, and Jason was her only light. And then he died, and it was dark again until Cheryl met Toni. Then it felt like Toni was disappearing on her too. Toni insists that she isn’t going anywhere and that maybe there’s still a chance for them. They then start singing "Seventeen" before sharing a kiss, reuniting. Later, as they prepare for the show backstage by doing their makeup and blotting their lipstick with a kiss. Cheryl declares that red lipstick was made for Toni and they kiss again.[19]

The Farm[]

Toni convinces Cheryl to stay home

After an odd encounter with Cheryl, who seems to have been brainwashed by the Farm after Betty sent her in to get information, Toni confronts Betty about what's going on. Betty explains that Edgar Evernever has somehow made Cheryl believe that she's talking to Jason. Toni sits Cheryl down and shows her the surveillance footage of her father shooting her brother because she needed to be reminded of the truth, that Jason's dead, in spite of whatever the Farm may have convinced her. However, Cheryl claims that the video is fake. Toni then asks if Cheryl ever hugged Jason while at the Farm, which Cheryl hesitantly claims she has. Evelyn confronts Toni at school about trying to turn Cheryl against the Farm, but Toni insists that she loves Cheryl and Cheryl loves her, and she's not backing down. To prove this, Toni seduces Cheryl into staying home the next night instead of going to a meeting at the Farm, telling her that she needs Cheryl more than the Farm does.

Cheryl approaches Toni in the girls locker room after being told that she has to make a choice between Jason and Toni. Toni attempts to explain to Cheryl that Jason's only a ghost, though Cheryl isn't convinced. And while she admittedly loves Toni, she's loved Jason her entire life. Toni refuses to allow their relationship to end, asking if there's anyway Cheryl can be with both her and Jason. Cheryl replies that there's only one way, and that's if Toni joins the Farm, which she does. However, unbeknownst to Cheryl, Toni is secretly working with Betty to save Cheryl and expose the Farm.[20] However, it doesn't take long for Toni to become brainwashed, too.[21]

Toni and Cheryl at Prom

Cheryl and Toni are working the Prom ticket sales booth when Evelyn approaches to inform them that campaigning for Prom Queen is strictly forbidden, as it goes against their strictures of equality. This is a test. They can either be Queens for one night, or they can live in the glory of the Farm for all eternity. Cheryl answers that she wants both, however, she ultimately concedes when Edgar threatens to keep her from seeing Jason. On the night of Prom, Toni expresses how sorry she is that Cheryl won't get to be Prom Queen. Cheryl says it's okay as Edgar gave her something more than a queen-ship, that being humility, which Toni knows isn’t true. Cheryl admits this and reveals that being a Farmie is starting to lose its appeal.[22]

After Betty discovers the Farm is harvesting organs, she shows proof to Cheryl in the form of a heart. Cheryl realizes that Toni is about to have her procedure done and rushes off to save her. As Toni prepares for her procedure at the Farm, Cheryl barges into the infirmary, demanding that they stay away from Toni. She shoves the nurses and grabs a scalpel, keeping the nurses at bay as she and Toni escape after learning that Betty was right all along about the Farm. They make a run for the back door, though a couple orderlies are right on their tail. Cheryl and Toni race down the hallway in search of an exit. They head down into a stairwell, where the door is locked but a tiny window, just barely large enough for them to squeeze through, is unlocked. With the two orderlies not far behind, Toni crawls out the window first, though Cheryl does not follow her, instead, she shuts the window behind her as the two of them would never make it far on foot together. Cheryl holds the orderlies off long enough for a bare foot Toni to make it into the nearby woods.[23]

Cheryl and Toni reunite

With her brainwashing broken, Cheryl explores the Farm in hopes of finding proof to get through to Kevin and Fangs, and instead finds Jason's corpse, which Edgar dug up and used to convince her she was talking to Jason. Just outside Thistlehouse, Toni has rallied the Pretty Poisons and Southside Serpents in preparation to storm the Farm and retrieve Cheryl. Much to their surprise, Cheryl has already escaped with the help of Alice, and runs into Toni's arms to kiss her. Cheryl asks where is Betty. Nana Rose replies that she's being hunted at Thronhill with all the others. Penelope has been planning this for weeks. It's the grand hunt. With little time to spare, the Poisons and Serpents ride out, saving Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead from the Gargoyle Gang.[24]

Cheryl and Toni meet with Mr. Honey

After their back-to-school dance for senior year is cancelled by Mr. Honey, Riverdale High's new principal, Cheryl returns to Thistlehouse, where Toni finds her in the chapel talking to Jason's corpse, which Cheryl secretly brought back from the Farm. However, Cheryl claims that she was simply praying for divine guidance on how to handle their discord with Mr. Honey. She's come up with a plan to host a back-to-school party at Thistlehouse instead. Cheryl gives a speech at the party, promising her fellow students to take down their new principal.[25]

While carving pumpkins at Thistlehouse, Toni tells Cheryl that it's time to bury Jason after she'd been promising for weeks they would. Cheryl wants to postpone the burial until after Halloween, but Toni presses her into doing it today. Cheryl settles and agrees to bury Jason on the Blossom family plot on the grounds of Thornhill, though she warns Toni Jason won't like this. And when they return, they find a doll sitting on the couch. Cheryl claims it's the doing of Jason's ghost, who's mad about them burying him. Toni isn't buying Cheryl's story and throws the doll away. While making out on the bed, Cheryl and Toni hear the twins crying over the baby monitor, only to find them sound asleep in the living room. When Cheryl asks Nana Rose for the other baby monitor, she tells them that she heard Cheryl's brother crying in the chapel. So, they head down to the chapel, where they find the other baby monitor and the doll that Toni previously threw away. Cheryl is insistent that this is the work of an angry Jason and suggests performing a séance in order to talk to him.

When the planchette begins moving, Cheryl insists this isn't her doing, and Nana Rose confirms that it's not Jason or Cheryl moving the board. It's Julian. Penelope held three babies in her womb. Julius was to be Cheryl and Jason's triplet, but in the end, only Cheryl and Jason were born because Cheryl absorbed Julian. Toni is beyond skeptical, but she's willing to bring Jason back if it means the hauntings will stop. After digging Jason up, Toni approaches Cheryl with Julian's doll after finding him on the bed. Although, it pains Cheryl to admit it, she was gas-lighting Toni before, but now she swears that she truly has no idea how the doll got back on the house. Nana Rose tells them it's Julian who returned the doll.[26]

Killing Bedford Blossom[]

Toni encourages Cheryl to consider her family's offer

Too scared to leave Nana Rose and the twins alone with Julian, Cheryl circles the doll with a barrier of salt, as it's believed to prevent evil spirits from crossing over. However, she returns from school after being informed that Dagwood choked on a ping pong ball and finds the barrier of salt broken and Julian now in the chapel, on Jason's lap. She then receives an unexpected visit from aunt Cricket and uncle Bedford, who wish to sell the family maple business. Cheryl isn't interested, but relents when Toni suggests that selling the house and business could allow them start somewhere new and fresh. However, when they request to visit the chapel, Cheryl changes her mind and kicks them out. Cheryl believes that somehow Julian has brought her extended family upon them, and so, it's time to get rid of him once and for all. Cheryl drowns Julian in the tub, placing him underwater and laying a brick on top to keep him from floating up.

Cheryl and Toni awaken from their sleep to noises coming from the chapel, where uncle Bedford has discovered Jason's corpse. He grabs Cheryl before shoving Toni and tells her that she's going away for a long time. Toni tries to pull him off of Cheryl, but Bedford overpowers her and shoves Toni to the ground. He presses Cheryl against the wall and tells her that he's going to report her to the authorities. Better yet, he might save them the trouble and take care of Cheryl himself, holding his forearm to her throat. Toni hits uncle Bedford over the head with a candle stand, and she embraces Cheryl as Bedford bleeds on the ground.[27]

Cheryl comforts Toni

Cheryl informs Toni of the quickly approaching ice storm and her plan to dispose of Bedford's body in Sweetwater River before the ice freezes over, though Toni's still guilt-ridden, having killed Bedford. Cheryl reminds her that she was saving her and didn't mean to, and she loves her for it. Toni later finds aunt Cricket is parked down the road, spying on them, making it impossible to get rid of Bedford's body. So Cheryl plots to scare Cricket off by inviting her to celebrate Thanksgiving with them while honoring her Gothic, ghoulish roots.

During dinner, Cheryl looks to Nana Rose to regale them with the tale of the first Blossom Thanksgiving, which consisted of the Blossom settlers becoming cannibals to survive. Cheryl can only imagine what a scandal like that would do to the family name, especially if it were to come out right as aunt Cricket was trying to negotiate the sell of their maple business. The Blossoms have always been highly carnivorous, after all. Cheryl ate her brother Julian in the womb, and Cricket is eating the meat pies made from uncle Bedford. Cheryl tells her aunt Cricket that she's welcome to search the house, as uncle Bedford will never be found. Any evidence that he was ever there is in the process of being digested. With no other option, Cricket and Fester leave Thistlehouse, falsely believing that they've eaten Bedford themselves, though he's actually been dumped in Sweetwater River as planned.

Toni and Cheryl claim that they baked Bedford into the food

At the night's end, Cheryl and Toni snuggle up on the couch, discussing their success: they defended their home, dumped Bedford's body in Sweetwater River as planned, and convinced Cricket and Fester that they ate Bedford, when really, they simply ate meat pies. And best of all, they have the house all to themselves for the rest of the weekend. Cheryl then grows serious, telling Toni that she loves her and is grateful for her. Toni tells her that she loves her too, and they share a kiss by the fireside while Julian sits nearby.[28]

Saying goodbye to Jason[]

Cheryl reads her results

Cheryl is ordered to see the school's guidance counselor, Mrs. Burble, and has a breakdown about everything that has been happening in her life, admitting that she fears she's gone crazy. Mrs. Burble reassures her that she hasn't, and helps her realize that someone is likely moving Julian around the house, making her think she's going crazy. She refers Cheryl to a test she can take to determine if she really did absorb a twin in the womb. Cheryl meets Toni at Pop's, and Toni assures her that she loves her and nothing would ever change that, regardless of what the results her. Cheryl is elated to discover that the results are negative, and shares Mrs. Burbles theory about someone moving Julian around the house.[29]

Cheryl and Toni embrace

Cheryl pretends to commit suicide in order to lure her mother out of the walls of Thistlehouse, which she does successfully before putting her on trial for her all of her crimes and then locking her away in the bunker when she finds her guilty. With her mother out of the picture, Cheryl decides it's time to bury Jason, as he deserves to rest in peace. So they head to Sweetwater River along with Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead. They were all with her when she tried to take her life. It's only fitting that they're present as she sends Jason off. Cheryl sets the funeral pyre ablaze, consuming Jason's body with fire, and Archie and Jughead push it into Sweetwater River. Cheryl holds Toni close and says that she wishes she could’ve met Jason for real.[30]

Getting revenge on Nick St. Clair[]

Cheryl tells Toni about her past with Nick

Nick St. Clair returns to Riverdale and is welcomed to the Maple Club by Toni, though Toni is unaware of his history with Cheryl. Later that night, when Toni asks Cheryl why she bailed on her earlier at work, Cheryl opens up to her about Nick's attempt to assault her Sophomore year. She says she thought she'd moved past it, but that seeing him triggered her. Toni understands because she went through a similar situation before, and offers to help Cheryl get through it. Toni devises a plan to get back at him. She returns to the Maple Club, where she offers Nick and his friends a refill. Toni then invites Nick into a private room. Unbeknownst to Nick, he's been drugged. When he awakens, he's without his pants, feathers are everywhere, and Kevin and Fangs are sitting at the edge of the bed. Toni then shows him the recording of the tickling videos they recorded of him while he was drugged and reveals that she knows exactly what Nick did to Cheryl and other women like her. She warns Nick from ever coming back to Riverdale or assaulting another woman. Because if he does, she'll show the world what was done to him. Toni then returns home and shows Cheryl the recording of Nick, and Cheryl thanks her for slaying yet another dragon from her past, marveling at how lucky she is to have Toni.[31]

Senior Year Break-up[]

Cheryl plans a dinner party

As senior class president and vice president, Cheryl and Toni head up the sign up booth for Prom court, where Cheryl explains how important being Prom queen has always meant to her. Toni doesn't share the same sentiment, but says if it's important to Cheryl it's important to her, but she's more concerned with being Serpent Queen. As they prepare for bed later that night, Cheryl proposes they host a dinner party at Thistlehouse before the prom. Cheryl wants to invite Toni's family specifically, however, Toni claims that her grandparents aren't quite ready for some "big gay Prom dinner party." Cheryl questions what happens when she meets them at graduation, to which Toni replies that it may be better if she pretends that they're not dating. Toni then approaches her Nana, who is already aware of her relationship with Cheryl, and is outraged not because Toni is dating a girl but that the girl is a Blossom. She reminds Toni how that family has taken everything from them over the decades. She refuses to allow Toni to date a Blossom, forcing Toni to choose between her lover and her family.

Cheryl and Toni dance at Prom

Just as Cheryl thinks she'll have to go to Prom alone, Toni shows up, assuring her there was never a doubt she would. They pose for pictures with Nana Rose and then attend Prom with their friends, where they're crowned Riverdale's first openly gay Prom Queens. However, no queenship is complete without a court, so Cheryl invites Archie, Veronica, Betty, and Jughead to join them for the traditional promenade court dance. However, the dance ends abruptly after the Auteur makes their next move, playing on the big screen another snuff film. While they didn’t get to finish their ceremonial dance, Cheryl is overjoyed that they were crowned prom queens. Now, a carriage awaits them to Thistlehouse. However, Toni can’t leave with Cheryl. Her Nana said that if she didn’t return home by midnight, then she would never speak to Toni again. With no other choice, Toni parts ways with Cheryl, who understands and thanks her for a memorable prom. Toni promises Cheryl that they'll work it out, but Cheryl ends the night crying on the floor at home, telling Nana Rose that she's realized she and Toni won't end up together because she's a Blossom, and they're destined to be alone.[32]

Cheryl and Toni plan a vacation

Toni approaches Cheryl at her locker after overhearing her run-in with Ms. Bell over graduation gown colors. Toni then apologizes for not going home with Cheryl after prom. Cheryl sympathizes, as she doesn't wish to make Toni choose between herself and family. Cheryl then tells Toni that she has Blossom family business to attend to. Cheryl attempts to get her family members to agree to sell part of their land and have it declared sanctuary grounds for the Uktena people, but they refuse, so Cheryl approaches Penelope for help. She tells Cheryl to get an alibi, so Cheryl proposes that she and Toni take a mini-vacation away from both of their families given the stress they’ve both been under. When Cheryl returns, she discovers that Penelope has poisoned the entire extended Blossom family, leaving Cheryl in full control of the business to do with what she wants.[33]

Cheryl and Toni break up

As everyone prepares for graduation, Cheryl spots Toni showing her nana her locker, where she tells her of all the special memories she's made at the school, including with Cheryl. But when Cheryl hears her nana tell Toni that she's gone the Topaz family proud, she realizes, she sadly walks away instead of joining them. After the graduation ceremony and time capsule burial, Cheryl reveals to Toni that she's no longer going to Highsmith. It no longer feels right, however, she insists that Toni still go when she says she won't go if Cheryl isn't. Cheryl must stay behind and redeem her family, as the Blossom family name conjures a horror show. Now that she has control of the maple factory, she has a chance to lift the town and take back the Blossom family legacy. Toni questions if Cheryl's sudden need for redemption stems from her encounter with Nana Topaz. Toni tells Cheryl that she need not worry, as her nana is starting to come around to the thought of them being together. As tears run down her face, Cheryl tells Toni that she loves her with every ounce of her soul, but that she doesn’t want to force her girlfriend to choose between her and family. And perhaps if Cheryl's successful, one day, Toni won’t have to choose because they could be together with their full blessing. Toni doesn't want to hear Cheryl say they're breaking up, so Cheryl promises she'll never say it, but that's what happens.[34]

Seven years later[]

Cheryl paints Toni

Seven years after graduation, Toni is finally Serpent Queen and is also pregnant. After Toni got back from Highsmith, she checked on Cheryl a couple of times, but it didn't amount to much as Cheryl gave her the brush off. She had taken up painting and even offered to paint Toni. As Cheryl painted her, Toni stated that no one had seen Cheryl in town for years. Cheryl insisted that she was fine and that she didn't have a reason to leave Thornhill. Toni asked if Cheryl wanted to hear about her after all their time apart, however, Cheryl had kept a close eye on Toni since their breakup. She knew that Toni graduated with a 3.9 GPA after majoring in social work and a minor in photography. She also did extensive charity. Toni then revealed that she was out and open with her family. They talked about Cheryl, whom her family recognized for her attempts to make up for her family's sins. Toni believed that they would approve of them being together, but Cheryl explained that the Blossom curse ran too deep for them to get back together. Cheryl was doomed to a life of unhappiness. After that Toni, they sat in silence while Cheryl painted Toni for another twelve hours.

Reviving the Vixens[]

Toni's plan works like a charm

After Toni's plan to lure Cheryl out of the house by reviving the Vixens works, Toni's practice is interrupted by Cheryl, who is intent on reclaiming the Vixens, but Toni refuses to give them up without a fight, as she's in the process of rebuilding the team. To settle the dispute, Cheryl challenges a pregnant Toni to a dance off. One of the Vixens volunteers to dance in Toni's place. Cheryl and the young Vixen battle back and forth, though the battle ends with a draw, resulting in Cheryl and Toni sharing control of the Vixens, just as Toni wanted.

Toni confronts Cheryl

Toni confronts Cheryl after a disagreement in how to train the Vixens, reminding Cheryl that the team belong to the both of them. She goes on to say that Cheryl has gotten away with murder because of her money and privilege. She understands that Cheryl has been through a lot, but that doesn't give her the right to be a holy terror in Riverdale without reason. Cheryl retorts that Toni will never understand what it's been like for her holding up in Thornhill for the last seven years. Toni replies that Cheryl cursed herself. Isolating herself wasn't as great of a sacrifice as she thought. In fact, it was selfish. Toni refuses to allow Cheryl to take over the Vixens for vanity of revenge. Though she wants Cheryl on the field with them, fighting with the good guys, Cheryl first needs to get herself together. Cheryl simply replies that Toni's cruelty is beyond words.[35]

Cheryl confronts Toni

After announcing that Kevin and Fangs are engaged and having a baby with Toni as their surrogate mother, she speaks with Cheryl about possibly taking control of the Vixens in her leave. However, Cheryl is enraged and overwhelmed by the discovery that Toni is giving birth to Kevin and Fangs' child and that Toni didn't tell her the truth. It was her idea to carry their child after being diagnosed with a medical condition that makes it more difficult to get pregnant the older she gets while a junior at Highsmith. She and Fangs are like family; they were initiated into the Serpents together, so when he and Kevin began discussing adoption or the possibility of a surrogate mother, she volunteered. Whilst she may be having a child with Kevin and Fangs, Toni would like to pursue a relationship with Cheryl. But given recent developments, Cheryl no longer sees that as possible.

RD-Caps-5x08-Lock-&-Key-106-Toni-Cheryl

Cheryl has a gift for Toni

Cheryl apologizes to Toni and offers to host a celebration at Thornhill for her, Kevin, and Fangs, which Toni agrees to, because her support means the world to her. The party ends up being a key party, where everyone picks a key from a bowl and has to spend the night with whoever they're paired with. As their friends pair off, Cheryl and Toni are the last ones, which Cheryl says is fate, though Toni doesn't believe in that. However, Cheryl has a gift: a nursery for Toni's child. She explains that it's a place where they can be together. Toni now realizes that Cheryl staged the evening to break up Kevin and Fangs. All these years, Cheryl has been compelled to restore Thornhill without truly ever understanding why. Now she sees that all her efforts were to make a sanctuary for Toni's child. However, Toni refuses to raise her child in a "house of horrors." Toni refuses to be trapped at Thornhill as she was at Thistlehouse. She wanted to have a normal relationship with Cheryl, but clearly that was a mistake. She apologizes to Cheryl for leading her on and leaves.[36]

Making Amends[]

Toni visits Thornhill

When Toni goes into labor at the Whyte Wyrm, Cheryl helps deliver her baby upstairs at Pop's, and later informs the gang that Toni had a boy.[37] Later, a young student named Britta comes out to Toni and reveals that she's been kicked out of her house for being gay, causing Toni to search for a foster family for her. After she fails to find any place that can take her, Toni eventually goes to Cheryl, revealing that Britta has a similar story to hers, and asks if Cheryl would mind taking her in. Cheryl expresses surprise that Toni would trust her with Britta after their recent falling out, but Toni reminds her that she's loved her and felt her love, so she knows the huge capacity for love that Cheryl has. Cheryl says she'd be honored and begins fostering Britta.[38]

Rivervale[]

Cheryl calms Anthony

When a bomb goes off in Archie's room, a parallel universe is created called Rivervale, which is exactly like Riverdale, except the supernatural exists. Cheryl finds Toni out in the woods with Anthony, who won't stop crying due to a bad case of colic, and offers to try calming him down, and is immediately successful in getting his crying to stop when she holds him. She thinks it must be the perfume she made, and offers to give some to Toni if she'll agree to help her with something. That something ends up being a ritual sacrifice of Archie, to help revive the dying town of Rivervale.[39]

Cheryl's Possession[]

Abigail and Toni talk

Back in Riverdale, Nana Rose plots to bring Abigail back from the dead after it becomes obvious Cheryl will not do her bidding. She secretly casts a spell that puts Abigail's soul into Cheryl's body, while Cheryl's is locked away in Abigail's mind. The plan is for Abigail to get revenge on Betty, Archie and Jughead, as the ancestors' of the people that killed her, but her plans are quickly derailed when she sees Toni, who is a spitting image of the love of her life, Thomasina Topaz. She asks Britta to share what she knows of Toni, and then uses the desire to adopt Britta as an excuse to meet with Toni in her office. She flirts with Toni and asks her to come to Thornhill to discuss the adoption, but ends up visiting her at the Whyte Wrym because Toni has to work. As she questions Toni about what she knows of her ancestor Thomasina, she discovers that Toni is dating Fangs, a descendant of the man that killed Thomasina, and is heartbroken. When Nana Rose declares relief that Abigail will no longer be distracted by 'Serpent trash", Abigail locks her up and declares that she will get her revenge with Thomasina by her side.[40]

With plans to transfer Thomasina's soul into Toni's body, Abigail brings roses to Toni's office in an attempt to get some of her blood for the spell. Toni happily accepts the roses and opens up to who she believes is Cheryl about all of the problems in her life, including Fangs' recent arrest and Archie's tension with the Ghoulies.[41]

Red Wedding[]

Toni tells Cheryl she's getting married

After Toni proposes to Fangs to strengthen their side of the custody case for Anthony against, Toni stops by Thornhill to deliver the news to Cheryl of her and Fangs' engagement without revealing the real motivation. Cheryl is clearly upset by the news, and they are joined by Heather, who Toni recalls Cheryl previously mentioning. Toni seems a bit taken back but insists that she's happy for Cheryl, and invites them both to her bachelorette party. Upset by the news, Cheryl goes to Kevin and together they cast a wedge spell, meant to curse Toni and Fangs' relationship, leaving the wedge up to the universe to decide. Cheryl later stops by Toni and Fangs' apartment to deliver some muffins. Upon her arrival, she learns that Baby Anthony has been crying non-stop and that he has colic. It started around yesterday afternoon, and now Toni fears they may have to cancel the bachelorette party. Realizing that it must be the result of the wedge spell, Cheryl runs home and ends it, calling Heather for help on how to fix it. Heather gives Anthony a calming tonic she concocted in the greenhouse, which stops his crying. Heather asks Cheryl what caused her to react so recklessly, and Cheryl admits to her that she's been holding on to the idea that she and Toni were fated to reunite, and now that it doesn't seem to be the case, it's cutting. With Baby Anthony no loner ill, Toni proceeds with her bachelorette party at the Babylonium.[42]

Toni dying in Cheryl's arms

Cheryl informs Heather that Toni has asked her to officiate the wedding, as Cheryl was previously a minister, Heather asks what she said, and Cheryl morosely says that she agreed, which Heather says was a very nice thing for her to do. Cheryl perks up a bit as she agrees that it was nice, and declares that she's going to give Toni the best wedding gift ever: she's going to kill Percival for her. Though her plan is unsuccessful, Toni and Fangs' wedding still proceeds with Cheryl officiating as promised. But during the reception, Percival enacts the final plague, the death of all firstborns, and half the guests in attendance collapse. As Toni falls to the ground, Cheryl rushes to her side, and holds her as she dies in her arms.[43]

Cheryl tries to get through to Toni

Cheryl, Betty, Veronica and the remaining living plot to bring the dead back with the help of Sabrina, who informs them that they're going to have to die in order to go into the Sweet Hereafter and convince their loved ones to come back. Cheryl doesn't hesitate to volunteer to go in for Toni, and reluctantly adds Fangs, as well as her nana and Dagwood. When she shows up in the Sweet Hereafter, she finds Toni, Fangs and a grown up version of Anthony in their apartment, celebrating Anthony's new relationship with Twyla Twyst's son. She tries to convince Toni and Fangs that this isn't real and that they died right after their wedding, that the real Anthony is still a baby and needs them to come back to the real world. Neither believe her, especially Fangs, who harshly accuses her of making this up to try to break them up. Cheryl eventually appeals only to Toni and her motherly instincts before leaving, and eventually her words get through to Toni, who realizes Cheryl was right just as Cheryl, who has discovered she's a phoenix, brings them all back to life.[44]

Possessed by Abigail and Thomasina[]

Cheryl and Toni's souls

With Bailey's Comet headed straight for Riverdale thanks to Percival, Cheryl reveals to Toni that Abigail will only agree to help them break Percival's binding spell in exchange for one final evening with her beloved Thomasina in carnal form, and they need two vessels. Toni wonders about their respective relationships with Fangs and Heather, but Cheryl brushes it off, as it won't technically be cheating, as Heather will keep their spirits in a jar until the love making ends. Toni agrees, and the two of them hold hands as Heather recites the soul transference spell, where Toni and Cheryl's attached souls are placed in a jar, allowing Abigail to possess Cheryl's body and Thomasina to possess Toni's body. The spell is a success and the reunited loves head into the bedroom, where they have sex.

Cheryl and Toni wake up together

When Toni and Cheryl awaken, both claim not to remember anything from their time together, and Cheryl thanks Toni for agreeing to help. Later, while Heather and Cheryl are untying the knots to break the spell, Heather reveals that she saw something during the ritual earlier, and that Cheryl and Toni are forever soulmates. When Cheryl argues that Toni is with Fangs, Heather assures her that they are only together for now, and that Cheryl and Toni's fate is written in the stars and transcends time. As Cheryl prepares to melt the comet with her powers outside of Pop's and Toni hides in the bunker with Fangs and Anthony, they are seemingly thinking of one another as they sing "The End of the World" with their friends all across town, all waiting for what could possibly by the end.[45]

1955[]

To save them from Bailey's Comet, Tabitha used the last of her life force to send everyone back in time to 1955, where they now must live as high school students without their memories, while she works to try to untangle the timelines.

After being repeatedly denied and stonewalled, as a last effort to get her story about Emmett Till's murder heard, Toni suggests that she and Betty approach Cheryl, as junior class president, to help them. Betty doesn't see why she would, given her parents already tried to silence them, but Toni has faith Cheryl will do the right thing. They meet her in the girls washroom and ask if she'll help, to which she agrees. The three of them and Tabitha then devise a plan to distract Principal Featherhead and Miss Bell so Cheryl can sneak Toni into the office and allow her to read a poem by Langston Hughes over the PA system. Later, while Featherhead reprimands them for their behavior, Toni can't keep her eyes off of Cheryl.[46]

Cheryl is selling tickets for the annual sock hop when Toni strolls up and starts flirting with her, causing her to get all flustered. An amused Toni tells her to calm down, and suggests that Cheryl should ditch the planned musical entertainment of Kevin and the Crooners, and instead let her buddy Fangs perform, an idea Cheryl immediately rejects. But after discovering that Toni has been threatening anyone that plans to go to the dance, Cheryl goes to the Dark Room to confront her, only to end up accepting Toni's invitation to hang out and get to know each other, and watch Fangs perform. The next day, Toni and Cheryl work together to sell the rest of the sock hop tickets, and this time, Cheryl returns Toni's flirtations as they discuss her plans to let Kevin down gently. At the sock hop, Toni convinces a nervous Cheryl to join her for just one dance, unaware that Featherhead is watching them closely. As the final slow dance commences at the end of the time, Cheryl watches Toni longingly from across the room, until Featherhead approaches her and reminds that only boys and girls are supposed to dance together.[47]

Repressing Feelings[]

Toni is putting on a performance at the Dark Room, and invites Cheryl to come to the show. Cheryl declines, until Archie, upon Julian's urging, asks Cheryl out on a date, and she realizes going with a boy gives her the perfect excuse to attend the show. During Toni's erotic spoken word poetry performance, Cheryl fantasizes that Toni is performing just for her, and becomes aroused. Horrified by her feelings, Cheryl demands that Archie take her home immediately when she snaps out of it, as Toni watches on knowingly. Later that night, after forcing herself to kiss Archie to prove something to him and herself, Cheryl has a sex dream about Toni. The next day at school, Cheryl makes a show of walking down the hall holding Archie's hand, but Toni sees right through her act, and later tells her that she doesn't need to parade Archie around to prove something. Cheryl snaps at Toni to stop making assumptions about her, but is unable to hide her jealousy when Toni kisses Julian in front of her at Veronica's make out party that night. The next day, when Veronica asks Toni how the rest of her night went, Toni reveals that she's playing the long game with someone, but doesn't want to say who just yet.[48]

After Cheryl lies to Penelope about having sex with Archie in an attempt to get her off her back about her lack of interest in boys, both of their parents force them to get engaged to save Cheryl's reputation. But when Toni overhears them talking about running away to California to elope, she confronts Cheryl and tells her that she shouldn't do it. Cheryl demands to know why Toni thinks she knows her better than she knows herself, and Toni admits that it's because she was once in her position, and she understands what she's going through. She tells Cheryl that no matter how far away she runs, she'll never be able to run away from herself, and that one day she'll have to face who she really is or she'll just wither away. Taking Toni's advice, Cheryl ends things with Archie and then meets her at the Dark Room, admitting that she doesn't know where to go from here. Toni offers her a lesbian pulp novel to read, to see if anything in the story resonant with her.[49]

When Cheryl returns the book to Toni after reading it, Toni invites her to the Dark Room so they can discuss it, but Cheryl declines, as she has Vixens try outs, something she assumes is too square for Toni's interests. Toni proves her wrong by showing up at try outs, and Cheryl has another sexy fantasy of Toni when she does her routine. Once she's done, Cheryl offers her a position on the spot, much to Evelyn's chagrin. While Toni's friend Lizzo teases her about how into Cheryl she must be to become a cheerleader, Evelyn tells Cheryl she's not comfortable having a "lezzie" on the squad and in the changing room with them. Cheryl assures her that Toni isn't into girls and threatens her to stop saying such things. Toni later catches Evelyn snooping around her locker, and Evelyn, having found the book, says she knew Cheryl was lying about Toni not being into girls.

The next day, an angry Toni confronts Cheryl about what she said to Evelyn, informing her that she's not ashamed of who she is or who she likes. Cheryl says she was just trying to protect Toni, but Toni doesn't need a savior, and she can't keep doing this with Cheryl. Realizing her chance might be slipping away, Cheryl chases after Toni and admits that she's not only attracted to girls, but attracted to Toni, too. Toni exhales, glad that they're finally getting somewhere. They head to the Dark Room, where they share stories about their past. Toni says she's always known she likes girls and boys, and that her parents caught her necking with a neighbor girl when she was younger and kicked her out; now she lives with her grandmother, who more or less accepts her. Cheryl explains that she had an aunt Carol growing up, who her mother cut out of their lives for being gay, and wondered at a young age if she was like her aunt. She didn't think she could ever live like her though, openly loving women, because if she wanted to be accepted by her family, she'd have to play a role, which is what she was doing with Archie. Now, though, she's ready for something else. Toni discreetly takes her hand and says she can dig that.

At the next Vixen practice, Cheryl appoints Toni to the top of the pyramid and informs Evelyn she can quit if she has an issue with it. Later, once they're alone in the locker room, Toni thanks Cheryl for the gesture and asks if she can show her appreciation. Cheryl says it would be more than okay, and they share their first kiss.[50]

Going Steady[]

After cheering at a losing Bulldogs game and sneaking in a makeout session in the empty gym after, Cheryl suggests to Toni that they should go steady. Toni questions how that would even work, since it's not as if she can pin her or they can walk down the hall holding hands. Cheryl says it could be just for them, their secret, but quickly backtracks when she sense Toni isn't into the idea. Toni explains that going steady is just a thing that squares do, and Cheryl understands, saying they're basically going steady anyway. The next day, Lizzo teases Toni about how she always goes after closeted girls because she knows there's no risk of commitment, and then Tabitha expresses surprise that she's a cheerleader now, wondering what happened to her writing for the Blue and Gold. Their comments get into Toni's head, and once Cheryl announces that all the Vixens will be paired up with a basketball player, she decides to quit the squad because it's not her scene. Cheryl understands, but asks if it also has anything to do with her asking her to go steady. Toni says it doesn't, but that she's not the settling down time and feels like she's lost herself. She apologizes and says she needs space to figure herself out.

When Toni tells Tabitha and Clay about her plans to start a black literary club at school, they wonder what happened to the Vixens, and Toni admits that she quit because she only tried out because she had a crush on Cheryl and now that's over. Clay asks what happens, and Toni says that they're too different that it would be impossible to work, but Clay argues that while it would be hard, it wouldn't be impossible, as he and Kevin find a way to make it work. It just depends on how much you like the other person. Toni later finds Cheryl outside school and asks if she, as class president, would be able to help her get funds for her literary club. Cheryl applauds Toni's idea and says she'll try, but warns her that Featherhead has to approve the budget, so it might not happen. Toni assures her that they'll find a way even if it doesn't, to which Cheryl promises to help if it comes to it. Cheryl asks if the reason Toni broke up with her is because she's white, and Toni admits there were a lot of interconnected reasons, but that was one of them. Cheryl accepts that and promises to try her best to get her the money, leaving Toni to watch her walk away, questioning her choice in ending things.

Cheryl ends up taking the money from a fundraiser her family hosts at Thornhill for the Bulldogs and Vixens because she thinks Toni's club is more worthy of it. Toni thanks her, and then as Cheryl's leaving, Toni stops her and invites her to go to the Dark Room after school, so they can talk about trying again.[51]

Between Toni starting up her literary club, Black Athena, and Cheryl's commitment to the Vixens, they don't get to spend much time together, and when they do, they have to be five feet apart. As a result, Cheryl expresses that she's been missing Toni and invites her to a movie, but Toni has to decline, as she has a book to finish reading. Cheryl wonders if she could perhaps sit in on a meeting, just to listen, but Toni says maybe once the club is more established and settled at the end of the semester. Cheryl is understanding, until she speaks with Kevin, and finds out that Clay invited him to a meeting to hear him read a poem. Later at the Dark Room, Cheryl drops hints about Kevin's invite and Toni eventually agrees to have Cheryl come, seeing how much it obviously means to her, and Cheryl promises not to take the privilege lightly.

At the meeting, they discuss the book Native Son, which Cheryl says was the most powerful book she's ever read. She admits that the family in the book reminded her of her own family in unfortunate ways, When she's asked if it's the first book by a Black author she's ever read, she says it is, but that she's looking forward to reading more. Clay says he can give her a reading list if she's interested, and Toni watches on proudly. Toni and Cheryl clear out the music room after the meeting, and discuss how it went; Toni admits she was worried Cheryl would feel uncomfortable around her friends, but they both agree that while it was uncomfortable to start, it ultimately went well. Toni says it was really nice to have Cheryl there, and while Cheryl says it was, she also realized why it's so important for Toni to have her own space. She says it meant a lot to be able to experience it, but that she'll stick to just attending public meetings from now on. Toni says they have an open mic night coming up and that Cheryl can also read the books on Clay's list, to which Cheryl agrees, suggesting that after she reads them, the two of them can discuss them together. Toni likes that plan, and invites Cheryl on a date to Fangs' concert, to which Cheryl happily accepts.[52]

Witch Hunt[]

Veronica organizes a secret Ghost Show at the Babylonium once she hears that Halloween isn't celebrated by teenagers in Riverdale, and Toni asks Cheryl if she wants to spend the night together at the show, since she promised to perform with Veronica. Cheryl says that it's tradition for the Vixens to have a sleepover, so she can't. Toni gets it, but also suggests that Halloween is the one night of the year that everyone is wearing a mask, so people like them can lets theirs slip a little. When Midge tells Cheryl she wants to skip the sleepover to go see her boyfriend Fangs perform at the Ghost Show, Cheryl decides she wants to go after all. They both say they're good at keeping secrets because they have big ones of their own, and agree to share them that night.

Toni is "over the moon" when Cheryl shows up after all, telling her that it means a lot to her that she came. Cheryl says that she was right, if they can't let their masks slip tonight, when can they? During the performance, Cheryl impulsively pulls Toni into a kiss on stage in front of everyone, and is met with cheers. Later, they go on a double date at Pop's with Midge and Fangs, where Cheryl finds out that Midge is pregnant. After she promises their secret is safe with her, Midge comments on their kiss, to which Cheryl says if anyone ever questions her about it, she'll blame it on the Halloween spirit. Toni is thankful that the four of them were able to take their masks off for the night, and Cheryl takes her hand as she voices her agreement. But unbeknownst to them, Evelyn is at the counter watching them.[53]

Thanks to Evelyn, word of their Halloween kiss reaches Featherhead, and he's compiled a list of suspected deviant students at school and given it to Clifford, who confronts Cheryl with the fact that her name is at the top of the list. Cheryl denies everything, and when her father says he'll ignore the rumors if she helps to confirm the names on the list, she refuses, saying that getting away from her family would be a blessing. Then Clifford threatens her with the only thing he thinks she cares about, the Vixens. Cheryl ends up telling Toni, Kevin and Clay about the list, and the other three come up with a plan to get them off their trail; Kevin and Cheryl will pretend to date while Toni and Clay will pretend to date. When Cheryl points out that hiding her true self and pretending like that is against everything Toni stands for, Toni admits that is it, but for Cheryl, for all their sakes, she can live with that. Cheryl later resigns from the Vixens because she couldn't lead them in good conscience if she compromised herself like they wanted, and when the others thank her for doing that, she says that when it came to a choice between cheerleading and loving who she chooses, there was no choice.[54]

Art & Love[]

Kevin and Clay write a musical about Archie and all his friends, and their senior year. When Toni and Cheryl express their dissatisfaction with being glorified chorus girls and then being shoehorned into a song about wanting Archie that they clearly have no business being in, they challenge Kevin to write something more truth about them, and himself. He and Clay then invite them back to sing a song about what it's like to be in relationships like theirs. As the four of them sing together, Cheryl and Toni have visions of what is seemingly their first time sleeping together in Cheryl's bedroom. Toni expresses her love for the song when they're done, saying it perfectly expresses what it's like being in a queer interracial relationship in the 50s, but when Kevin says it's not part of the musical and was just for them, Toni and Cheryl quit the show, as they aren't interested in acting when they get enough of that in their daily lives.[55]

While Cheryl and Toni gush over pretty female celebrities in an entertainment magazine outside school, Lizzo shows them an underground lesbian pinup magazine she bought called Femme-and-In magazine. They both excitedly flip through it before Toni asks if they can borrow it. Lizzo says they can keep it, as she always gets two. Later in the Dark Room, Toni suggests that they should have a pinup shoot of their own, as she has a camera that has a timer, so they could both be in it. Cheryl is into the idea, suggesting that she paint a portrait of their favorite in the style of a pulp novel, and that they should have the photoshoot in Thornhill's chapel, as her family never uses it.

Cheryl and Toni have their sexy photoshoot in lingerie, and later Toni develops the pictures in the school's dark room with a smitten smile on her face. She later shows the final prints to Cheryl, who is in awe of Toni's talent. Toni insists photography is easy when the models are as stunning as them, and even jokingly suggests they could send the pictures into the magazine, to which Cheryl replies maybe after they graduate. They both agree on their favorite picture and Toni says she can't wait to see Cheryl's paintings. However, after Cheryl spends the night creating a perfect portrait of them, Penelope finds the painting the following night while Cheryl and Toni are at Polly's burlesque show and destroys it. When Cheryl finds the ruined painting and pictures the next morning, she confronts her mother about it and then meets Toni at Pop's declaring she's ready to bring her parents down for good.[56]

Cheryl and Toni develop another set of their pictures together in the school's dark room with the intention of publishing them in Femme-and-In magazine, so they can come out in the loudest way possible and get back at her family. After, Cheryl bumps into Betty and Betty sees a picture of them kissing, and she ends up coming out to her and telling her she's going steady with Toni. Betty isn't very surprised, realizing it makes sense in retrospect, and then reveals to Cheryl that she's behind the The Teenage Mystique, because she's planning on publishing a book version, and thinks Cheryl and Toni's story and pictures would be a good addition. Cheryl says she'll have to talk about it with Toni, but she thinks it would be a good fit. Betty than asks if they would be willing to take her picture and turn it into a painting for her book cover, so Cheryl and Toni go over to her house for a photoshoot.[57]

Happily Ever After[]

After Cheryl and Jughead team up to take down the Blossoms and reveal them as Russian spies, Featherhead goes down with them, leaving the position of principal open for Toni to suggest Mr Weatherbee as his replacement, making him the first Black principal at Riverdale High. Without her father or Featherhead in charge, Cheryl is able to rejoin the Vixens, and she takes her captain spot back from Evelyn by winning a dance off. She then comes out to the squad by telling them she's going steady with Toni, and she's met with nothing but support, and even two other Vixens coming out too.

Angel Tabitha returns with news that she's finally fix the timelines by weaving all the different ones together to form one single one. However, she is not able to move people through time, which means that everyone is going to have to stay in the past. But, she can at least give them their memories, if they want them. She shows Jughead tapes of the original timeline first, and the two of them gather the gang and explain everything, giving them the choice to watch or not. Cheryl and Toni decide to watch together, and are accompanied by Reggie, Dilton and Fangs in the bunker. They hold hands as the tapes start, preparing for what they might witness. Once everyone has seen and remembers everything, they gather again to decide whether to keep their memories of their past life or not. They ask Tabitha if it's possible to only remember the good memories, and she says it is. So they gather one last time at the Babylonium to watch a highlight reel of their best memories, where Cheryl and Toni share adoring smiles as they witness their first kiss.[58]

In 2023, Jughead visits an elderly, dying Betty - the last of the gang still alive - and offers to let her relive one day of her life, and she chooses a day she missed: the last day of Senior year. As the two of them go through the day, Jughead informs/reminds Betty of how everyone's lives turned out. While the return of their memories caused Betty, Archie, Jughead and Betty to remember what it was like being with each other and caused them to all form a quad relationship to date each other, Cheryl and Toni stayed together all year, even with their memories.

Cheryl and Toni host a gallery opening for their collaborative art collection at the Dark Room, inspired by their picture/painting project. Cheryl calls Toni her partner in all things and says that their relationship is the most thrilling thing she could have ever imagined, that they're always creating, and there's no separation between their art and their love. They share a kiss in front of the whole crowd as their friends and family cheer them on. As everyone mingles, Narrator Jughead informs Betty that Toni and Cheryl stayed together, and moved out west together to the Oakland Hills, where they spent their lives as artists and activists, and that they had a son named Dale, named after Riverdale. When Betty asks how they died, Jughead assures her that they died peacefully, "after living full, gorgeous, sexy lives." Later, the gang all gather at Thornhill, and it's the last time they were all ever together, as Fangs died in a bus accident soon after. Archie decides to read a poem that's full of references and jokes to their previous lives, including the bad memories they were supposed to forget. He pokes fun at Cheryl for keeping Jason's body down in her cellar, but says he's glad to see her and Toni back together.

Back in 2023, Betty dies just as her granddaughter is pulling into the Pop's parking lot, and a teenage Betty gets out of the car, ready to join her friends in the Sweet Hereafter. When she enters the diner, she finds everyone waiting for her, including Cheryl and Toni, who are cuddled up together in a booth. They both hug her in greeting, and as Narrator Jughead says he'll leave them all there, where they're happy and forever seventeen, Cheryl and Toni share a sweet kiss as they finish their puzzle, surrounded by all of their friends.[59]

Quotes[]

Cheryl, I am so sorry. But you have to know your mother's wrong. You're not loveless. You're not deviant. Okay? You're... sensational.
— Toni to Cheryl[src]

Full disclosure... I didn't want to invite all the girls tonight. But I knew my hideous mother would never allow me to invite just you. Which is... what I craved.
— Cheryl to Toni[src]

You are the most important person in my life. I’ll do whatever it takes to make all these things right.
— Cheryl to Toni[src]

I need you tonight. I need you in every way. Mind, body, soul. But, uh, mostly body.
— Toni to Cheryl[src]

Sorry to interrupt your no doubt thrilling catch-up, chums, but, as you know, junior prom is this weekend. The theme is Fire and Ice, and, naturally, Toni and I are campaigning to be the most captivating prom queens this school’s ever seen. So it goes without saying, vote Choni for co-monarchs because, when you really think about it, no other options make sense.
— Cheryl[src]

Cheryl, I have no idea what you’re talking about, but I love you, and nothing would ever change that.
— Toni to Cheryl[src]

Toni, you know that I love you with every ounce of my soul, but I don't want you to have to choose between your family and me.
— Cheryl to Toni[src]
