Betty leaving her private purgatory

Day after day, Betty checks the headlines and local news, waiting to see if they had been exposed for murdering the shady man and disposing of his body. She later enters her room to find Chic taking a shower. As life carried on, Betty could feel the walls closing in on her until what was once just her house became her own private purgatory.

Cheryl is in disbelief that her mother hasn't yet grown tired of taking filthy wads of cash from strangers after what was presumably another session with one of her clients. She is then scolded by her mother for her crude remarks and judgmental tone as it was Cheryl's doing that drove away the one decent chance she had at love and happiness, that being with Hal Cooper. Cheryl scoffs at her mother's idea of love. As she tries to leave the room, her mother grabs her by her arm and asks what she could possibly know about love as she herself has never experienced it, except to rip it apart because she is a jealous, spite-filled, starving, emotional anorexic.

Veronica and Archie planning to op up to the lakehouse

While leaving for school that morning, Veronica and Archie are approached by her Hiram, who suggests that they go out to the family lakehouse for the weekend as a romantic getaway. While Veronica is fine with Andre driving them down and later picking them up Sunday night, she demands that there be no chaperones and that Andre leave immediately following their drop off. And so Hiram agrees to her demands. He even suggests that they invite Betty and Jughead. Before sending them off, Hiram asks to speak with Archie privately. He tells Archie that while they are at the lake house, he and Hermione would be hosting a meeting at the Pembrooke with the major New York families due to the unrest since Poppa Poutine's death. And he prefers if Veronica is out of town. The lake house is more so a safe house. He also informs Archie that Andre will be unseen but nearby in case anything happens.

Kevin asking Moose out

Kevin approaches Moose at his locker to see if he wanted to accompany him to the Bijou to watch the 2018 American romantic comedy-drama film Love, Simon. Unfortunately for Kevin, Moose already has plans to go with Midge, though he does invite Kevin to tag along, claiming that Midge knows all about them. Supposedly, she is cool with it, but Kevin passes on the offer nonetheless.

At school, Archie and Veronica invite Betty and Jughead to join them at the lakehouse. Betty is thrilled though she looks to Jughead to see if he is on board with the idea. While hesitant, Jughead agrees. Reasoning that it would offer a chance for him to work on his novel though Veronica makes sure to remind him that the point of the weekend is to relax and unplug. Cheryl then enters the student lounge after overhearing Veronica and Archie's invitation. When she attempts to invite herself, Veronica explains that the weekend getaway is for couples only.

Betty and Jughead in the Blue and Gold

While she is excited for their get-away weekend, Betty pulls Jughead away to the Blue and Gold offices to confront him over her suspicions that he is up to something. Jughead admits that he needs a new source of intel for his article on Hiram Lodge and he is hoping that it will be Veronica since she is on the inside of her family's business. However, Betty asks that he refrain from investigating her best friend considering that Veronica was kind enough to invite them to her family's cabin. Betty then confesses that ever since the night of the killing, she began feeling suffocated by Chic, who was by her account, everywhere. She needs the weekend to be an escape. Hearing this, Jughead agrees to postpone his investigation for the weekend. They then kiss.

After school, at the Cooper house, Jughead is startled by Chic as he waits for Betty to join him downstairs for their weekend get-away. Chic asks Jughead if he knows about the killing. And while Jughead assures Chic that he is to be trusted, Chic threatens the safety of Betty and Alice should Jughead tell anyone. Before Jughead can sum up an appropriate response, Betty joins the two of them downstairs and heads out the front door with Jughead, completely oblivious to the conversation that has just transpired.

Jughead confronting Archie and Betty

After school, Andre drives the gang out to the cabin. When Veronica was younger, her family would go out there every summer, whenever her dad could sneak away for a weekend. Veronica then tells Andre that he is to return Sunday night at 7:00 pm. Upon exiting the vehicle, Jughead references the cabin being the last house on the left. Veronica then shows Betty the inside of the lakehouse while Archie grabs the bags from Andre. While doing so, Andre tells him to call if they get into any kind of trouble. As Archie prepares to take the bags to the cabin, he briefly notices a gun holstered within Andre's jacket, though he makes no mention of it. Shortly after entering the cabin, Jughead gets a call from Cheryl who tells him about Betty and Archie's kiss outside of Thistlehouse just before Christmas. After hanging up with Cheryl, Jughead confronts Betty and Archie.

Toni trying to comfort Cheryl

Meanwhile, Toni confronts Cheryl in the girls' restroom at school after overhearing her tell Jughead that Betty and Archie kissed in front of Thistlehouse just before Christmas. She asks what was Cheryl's reason for suddenly deciding to expose this secret now. Cheryl responds by introducing herself as "Cheryl Bombshell" and states that she needs no reason to do what she does. However, Toni sees beyond her defenses, suggesting that Cheryl tell her what is actually bothering her as Toni can tell that she is in a lot of pain. Unfortunately, Cheryl is reluctant to do so, instead, she resorts to name calling and demands that Toni get her hands off of her as she storms out the bathroom.

Veronica and Archie wonder whether or not Betty and Jughead are going to break up over the kiss. The only thing Veronica is certain of is that she and Archie didn't break up over it. She then kisses Archie as a show of appreciation for him telling her about the kiss when he did and trusting her. To her, that's all she needed to know to prove that they are meant to be together. Veronica and Archie then proceed to have sex.

Jughead and Betty resolving their issues

Betty asks if the two of them can talk about the kiss as they sit awkwardly in their bedroom. Jughead explains that while he isn't mad about the kiss, he is wondering why Betty didn't tell him the truth about her and Archie when he was truthful about his night with Toni after the gauntlet. Betty says that she wanted to tell him but she thought that Archie was his third rail. Admittedly, Betty and Archie growing up together and living directly across from one another used to bother Jughead, but after everything they had recently been through, he isn't intimidated by a Black Hood-prompted kiss. Just as the two of them make up, Betty and Jughead hear Archie and Veronica having sex through the walls. Can't they just have a conversation, Jughead wonders.

Jughead's toast

Jughead and Betty join Archie and Veronica downstairs a little while later to ensure them that everything is fine. That night, while drinking margaritas, Jughead proposes a toast to the Lodges' hospitality and to putting the past behind them. Despite earlier agreeing to Betty's request to postpone his investigation, Jughead begins questioning Veronica, asking her about her parents and the SoDale project. Jughead then points out that as they were driving up to the cabin, he noticed that none of the houses had mailboxes or numbers. Veronica explains that Shadow Lake is a private community. Which leads Jughead to wonder if they are hiding something. However, before Veronica can respond, Betty confronts him on his intrusive line of questioning, leading Veronica to conclude that they are actually still fighting over the kiss between Betty and Archie. Understanding the reason for the tension in the room, Veronica instructs them to change into their swimsuits.

Vughead kiss

During a moment of full disclosure in the hot tub, Veronica reveals that when Archie told her about the kiss, she absorbed and processed it. In the end, she bore no ill will towards Betty or Archie. But the thought of it has haunted her a bit for the past few weeks. Now, as it seem to Veronica, Jughead and Betty are caught in the aftermath. To clear the air amongst them all, Veronica suggests that she and Jughead kiss. While Betty and Archie are reluctant to agree, Jughead sides with Veronica's sentiment to ease the tension as it would level the playing field. He reasons that a "Vughead" kiss might be precisely what it takes to save future "Bughead" from imploding. With Archie and Betty reluctantly agreeing, Veronica and Jughead share a kiss in the hot tub as Betty and Archie watch.

Jughead and Betty preparing to have sex

Later that night, Betty points out to Jughead that out of the four of them, only he and Archie haven't kissed. Jughead almost immediately realizes that this means that at some point, Betty and Veronica had shared a kiss. While getting dressed in the bathroom, she asks Jughead if kissing Veronica made him feel better. Jughead replies that watching Archie's face made him feel better. She then asks again if he enjoyed kissing Veronica. Knowing entrapment when he sees it, Jughead chooses not to answer. Betty then exits the bathroom in black lingerie and a black bob-cut wig, and tells Jughead that she will have to punish him if he did enjoy his kiss with Veronica. Betty packed the outfit in case he needed a distraction from sleuthing. So she proceeds to push Jughead onto the bed and climb on top of him as the two of them have sex.

After getting his daily workout in, Archie gets in bed. During which time, Veronica suggests that they have sex. However, Archie claims he is tired because he is clearly still upset about Veronica and Jughead's kiss. The two of them become distracted at the sound of Betty and Jughead having sex in the next bedroom.

Veronica confronting Andre and Archie

The next morning, Veronica watches from the balcony as Archie chops wood in the nearby forest. However, she grows suspicious as he takes off after receiving a message. So she follows him only to find that he is in communication with Andre despite making it perfectly clear that she didn't want him hovering over them. Veronica confronts the two of them. Archie and Andre reveal that her father is doing business in Riverdale with some of the other families so he wanted to make sure that Veronica is safe. Veronica resolves the matter by ordering Andre to leave, but not before telling him to call her father, and tell him that his cover has been blown. From Archie, all Veronica wants is space. So she would be heading into town with Betty.

Sierra and Tom flirting

Josie returns home to the Five Seasons to find her mother and Sheriff Keller supposedly discussing installing a security system at the law firm. As the Sheriff exits the room, her mother explains to her that she cares for Tom. While Josie understands, it is still weird to see her mother with another man, especially when her father still doesn't know. Unbeknownst to Josie, her father does, in fact, know about the affair as Sierra had told him. They were initially going to wait until after Josie's graduation but her mother decided it was time to tell Josie that they were getting a divorce. Josie asks if the Sheriff is going to get a divorce as well. Sierra replies that he has to talk to his wife, who is overseas and Kevin first. She also insists that they respect that.

Jughead telling Archie about B and V's kiss

In the woods, Jughead tells Archie about the kiss between Betty and Veronica. It happened during the first week of school, during River Vixens try-outs. (see: Chapter One: The River's Edge) Betty tried to explain to him why they kissed but the rationale stilled eludes Jughead. Archie takes the opportunity to apologize for kissing Betty. While there is no good excuse, he is apologetic. Jughead forgives Archie as their situation is far more complicated than any of them could've planned. After a poor attempt to explain to Archie the miracle of their friendship, Jughead simplifies it to the fact that it should be amazing that they are all such close friends. But sometimes it terrifies him. It is as if the four of them are in a powder keg. All it would take is one match and they would all blow up.

After picking up a few items, Veronica begins to flirt with the store clerk, but Betty quickly ends it, reminding Veronica that she is still with Archie despite their fight. As they exit the store, Veronica asked about Betty's relationship with Jughead. Betty replies that everything has been nice though Veronica replies that "nice" isn't what she heard through the walls. Betty then admits to wearing the very same outfit with Jughead that she wore when they drowned Chuck in Ethel's hot tub. (see: Chapter Three: Body Double)

RD-Caps-2x14-The-Hills-Have-Eyes-79-FP

FP telling Jughead about Hiram buying Sunnyside trailer park

Back at the cabin, Archie greets Veronica as she returns. While she is still upset at Archie, she tells him that he can make it up to her by remembering one thing that was simple and non-negotiable, that from that moment on, it is only about two of them, no one else. Jughead then gets a call from his dad who tells him that everyone is over at the trailer celebrating because the eviction notices for the back rent are gone. Paid in full. FP tells him that his article shamed Hiram Lodge into buying the trailer park and allowing everyone to stay. After the call with his father, Jughead confronts Veronica as his suspicions has been confirmed, that her father is gobbling up the Southside, piece by piece, starting with the Twilight Drive-In, and now the trailer park. With the Southsiders' debt cleared and eviction notices revoked, Archie, Veronica, and Betty wonder why he is outraged. Jughead explains that Hiram's move with buying the trailer park is tactic. But Archie, Betty, and Veronica insist that he is merely being paranoid and that Hiram is trying to make amends.

Sierra scolding Josie

Back in Riverdale, Sierra scolds Josie after she learning from Tom that Josie had told Kevin about the affair. She credited Josie for a lot of things, but never for being cruel. However, Josie believes that she did the right thing in telling Kevin because it will provide him with the chance to save his parents' marriage since she couldn't save hers. Although, because of Josie's interference, Kevin is no longer talking to his father, who is also still trying to reach his wife overseas. Their lives were imploding, which Josie blamed her mother for. However, according to Sierra, that was the Lodge's doing. This isn't how she wished for the affair to come out, but that choice was taken away from her, just like Josie took that choice away from the Sheriff and Kevin, even if she wasn't trying to hurt them.

RD-Caps-2x14-The-Hills-Have-Eyes-89-Moose-Midge

Midge and Moose at Pop's with Kevin

Midge and Moose enter Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe to find Kevin eating alone. So she invites him to join her and Moose in their booth. She asks if he is meeting anyone at the Bijou, but unfortunately, he wasn't. Which Midge thinks is unacceptable. She offers to help him find a date, suggesting one of the new Southside Serpents that had recently transferred to Riverdale High following the shut down of Southside High. She had heard that at least one of them was gay, Fangs Fogarty. However, Kevin notes that he didn't think he could date someone named "Fangs". Moose interjects that Kevin should at least give Fangs a chance given that he is attractive though Midge disregards his comment. She then asks how Kevin and Moose became friends. Despite Kevin and Moose coming to know each other through clandestine sexual encounters, Kevin tells her that they were lab partners in Biology.

Kevin runs into Josie at the Bijou where she apologizes for telling him about the affair as it wasn't her place. While she should've left that up to his father, she was just hurting and upset at her mother. Kevin accepts her apology, and like Josie, he too is at the theater without a date. So the two of them see the film together.

Cheryl and Toni at the movies

After watching from her bedroom as her mother welcomed another one of her clients to Thistlehouse, Cheryl headed down to the Bijou for the premiere of Love, Simon. There, she bumps into Toni, who is persistent in her approach to get Cheryl to open up. Cheryl initially believes that she is being stalked. But Toni claims that she merely came to see the movie with Fangs but he bailed on her at the last moment, forcing her to see the film by herself. Noticing that Cheryl is troubled, Toni asks if she is alright, hoping to get past her mean girl facade. Cheryl tells her that she is at the movies alone while also trying to stay away from her mother, who had turned their house into her sexual playpen. So to answer Toni's question, she isn't alright. Toni suggests that they see the movie together considering that neither had a date.

RD-Caps-2x14-The-Hills-Have-Eyes-114-Jughead-Betty-Archie-Veronica-Intruders

Jughead, Betty, Archie and Veronica surrounded by intriduers

A game of Monopoly is brought to a stop that night as Betty heads off to take a call from her mother. While she is gone, Jughead tells Archie and Veronica that he met Chic, who he describes as being kind of creepy. Betty returns from the call with her mother to announce that Hiram Lodge just bought the Register. Veronica insists that she had no idea her father was buying the Register though this only confirms Jughead's suspicions that Hiram Lodge is making big plays to take over. In wake of recent events, Betty begins to question the sincerity of Veronica's invitation to the cabin. Their suspicions are warranted given that Lodge Industries is buying property all over the Southside and now the one newspaper in town, which will prevent people from reporting on what he was doing. The means to silence the free press and keep Alice from coming after him. As the two couples go back and forth, glass breaking can be heard from inside the house. Four men wearing black ski-masks then enter the lake house with weapons in hand, demanding their valuables. Veronica goes with one of the intruders upstairs to give him her wallet. While doing so, she presses the silent alarm behind the nightstand. She also recognizes one of the intruders as the store clerk from the convenience store. After taking Veronica's wallet, one of the intruders demands that they get down on their knees. As he grabs a baseball bat, the phone rings. It's the security company. With guards on their way, the intruders exit the house. However, Archie chases after them as they had snatched Veronica's necklace. Archie manages to tackle the intruder to the ground. He recovers the necklace and unmasks the assailant. Just as Archie is about to pummel the attacker, Andre appears and he tells Archie to get back to the cabin. As Archie runs in the opposite direction, a gunshot rings throughout the forest.

Meanwhile, in Riverdale, after the movie, Kevin and Josie call their parents and tell them to meet them at Pop's. They assure their parents that it isn't a trap, but when Kevin and Josie were talking, they realized that the conversation is bigger than all of them and that it was probably going to be a long one. So they believe it was best if they started talking about it.

Toni comforting Cheryl at Pop's

Toni and Cheryl also stop by Pop's for milkshakes after the film. Toni jokes that while Cheryl may have believed that she mastered the art of silent tears, she saw Cheryl crying during the movie. Cheryl admits that she usually never cries during movies because real life is tragic enough. But when Simon's mother (characters from the film they saw at the Bijou) said that he used to be such a carefree kid, growing up, and then at a certain point he stopped being that happy kid because he was hiding a secret, it brought up a sore subject for Cheryl. She proceeds to cry as she explains to Toni how people in town view her, as a loveless monster. But Cheryl insists that this isn't true. She loved someone who loved her, but her mother destroyed it. Toni assumes that Cheryl is referring to Jason after hearing how close they were. But in actuality, she is referring to someone from her a past. A girl named Heather who she was best friends with in junior high. She used to sleepover at Cheryl's house every weekend until one night when her mother caught them in bed together and called her deviant. Toni is saddened by Cheryl's story. She tells Cheryl that she is neither loveless nor deviant, and that she is sensational and deserving of love.

RD-Caps-2x14-The-Hills-Have-Eyes-132-Jughead-Betty-Veronica-Archie

Jughead, Betty, Archie and Veronica in a booth at Pop's

Also in a booth a Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe is Archie, Veronica, Betty, and Jughead. They join hands and come together after the horrific ordeal. But at least none of them were hurt and they had each other. Afterward, Archie meets up with Hiram in his study. Hiram learned from Andre and Veronica that the cabin was broken into by four masked intruders. Hiram assures Archie that he did the right thing in telling them to take what they wanted because it was both the smart choice and the only choice. Thankfully, none of them were harmed though Andre did have to handle one of them. So Hiram wonders if this bothered Archie. Archie replies that the night they stopped the Black Hood, there was only one thing he regretted, and that was him hesitating the pull the trigger. So, Hiram informs Archie that when it comes to protecting himself or his loved ones, he should never hesitate. Archie then hands Hiram Veronica's necklace that he had recovered from the intruder.

Elsewhere, Jughead sees Betty home. As they enter her house, he tells her that there was more than one kind of home invasion. It's not always fast and violent. Sometimes they open the door and let the intruders in themselves. In this, Jughead warns Betty to be careful around Chic as he had gotten an odd vibe from him during their first encounter. They then share a kiss before Jughead leaves.
