"Chapter One Hundred and Two: Death at a Funeral" is the seventh episode of the sixth season of Riverdale and the one hundredth and second episode of the series overall.[2] It premiered on March 27, 2022.
Synopsis[]
HERMIONE COMES TO TOWN - Following the explosion at the Andrews residence, Archie assembles a team to help rebuild his home, while Jughead copes with his new reality. Meanwhile, at the Riverdale town hall meeting, Veronica breaks some news to the town, which later prompts a visit from her mother Hermoine. At Thornhill, Britta tries to get to the bottom of some strange happenings going on with Cheryl and Nana Rose.[3]
Plot[]
Jughead is still dealing with his hearing loss following the explosion at Archie's. Some things he can still do like before, such as read and eat, but other things, like writing, have proven more difficult than expected.
Betty tests Archie's invulnerability
Archie and Frank have assembled a crew, consisting of Tom Keller and Riverdale residents, to help rebuild his house. After the safety meeting, Betty uses a bench vise on Archie's hand to test the limits of his invulnerability, but he doesn't appear to feel a thing as she tightens the vise. All of Archie's childhood dreams of becoming a superhero seem to be coming true. Although, with Jughead being the fourth closest to the explosion, Betty begins to wonder if he's okay, and Archie agrees to check up on him.
Nana Rose tells Britta that Cheryl is gone
Britta alerts Nana Rose of her strange encounter with Cheryl, who seems less like herself than usual. Rose reveals that's because she transferred Abigail's soul from Britta's body to Cheryl's via an arcane ritual. Once untethered, her soul dissipated into the ether and nothingness. Cheryl is no more and there is only Abigail, who joins them and questions the excessively revealing fashion choices of this decade. Nana Rose explains that she brought Abigail back to lift them up and restore the Blossom family to their former glory. Riverdale once belonged to the Blossoms, and Rose wants to take it back, but first, Abigail would like to get a lay of the land, starting with the upcoming council meeting.
Upon learning that Jughead has lost his ability to hear, Archie communicates with him through index cards and asks if Jughead has experienced anything weird since the explosion. Archie claims that he's just curious, but Jughead isn't convinced.
Veronica comes clean to Reggie
Veronica confesses to Reggie that her father's body was found three days ago in a shallow grave, in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. His hands were zip tied and he'd been shot four times in the back of the head. His body was then burned. Reggie realizes that Veronica lied to him about calling off the hit and can't help but judge her. Additionally, Veronica reveals that they're hosting a memorial service for her father at the casino. Her mother, grandmother, and some of her father's associates are coming, but none of them know the truth about Hiram's demise. Reggie sarcastically asks if he should say that he's sorry for Veronica's loss and congratulate her.
Kevin tells his dad that he intends to stay in Riverdale a bit longer to look after baby Anthony and takes his father up on his offer to be his deputy. Tom is honored and toasts to Kevin joining the force.
Betty learns from Agent Lin that Glen's car was found outside of Pop's, and no one has seen or heard of Glen since he was supposed to be leaving Riverdale.
Veronica reunites with abuelita and mets Heraldo
Veronica consoles her abuelita, who has just arrived in town. She is deviated but not surprised. She always knew his life would always end in bloodshed on a dark night. She then introduces Veronica to Heraldo, her godson, who takes good care of her. And Veronica introduces her abuelita to Reggie, her business partner and boyfriend, who Heraldo hands a guest list to before revealing that abuelita would like for Veronica to give the eulogy at her father's service. Veronica is initially reluctant, but abuelita can think of no one more fitting.
Tabitha tries to help Jughead
Jughead shares with Tabitha that the doctor told him he has to wait at least six months before getting an implant. Tabitha asks him if he would consider learning American Sign Language (ASL), but he argues that he won't need it if he gets the implants. Tabitha then asks on an index card if he wrote today, but he hasn't. Jughead always listens to music when he writes, and when he tried to write without it, he couldn't. Even the inability to hear the clack of his keyboarded keys made writing feel alien to him, and unfortunately, there's nothing Tabitha can do to help.
Betty is suffering from headaches while going over what little evidence they have of Glen's missing person case. She is joined by Agent Lin, who informs her that she has a migraine and leaves a package on her desk. The package in question contains Glen's left foot, which Betty abruptly closes back.
Abigail sees Toni for the first time
Short for Toni, the Riverdale Council opens up the floor for community members to ask questions and give announcements. Abigail and Nana Rose are in attendance, where Abigail recognizes Archie as a descendant of Archiebald Andrews. After Archie asks for an extension on the permit for the dumpsters outside of his house, Veronica announces that her father is dead. She's fine and welcomes them to rejoice. Percival Pickens then takes the time to introduce himself to the community. In the earliest days of Riverdale, Abigail recalls how the Blossoms had a fellowship with the Pickens family, which Nana Rose reminds her did not end well. Alice welcomes Percival, who reveals that he's related to General Pickens and that with a little bit of luck and hard work, Riverdale could become one of the greatest and prosperous towns in America. He has many ideas he'd like to share with the council. However, before he can finish, Toni arrives after stopping a gang war from erupting. Abigail recognizes Toni as the spitting image of her beloved Thomasina and looks to Britta to tell her everything she knows about Toni.
With Tabitha still at the council meeting, Jughead gives another attempt at writing, but nothing comes to him. So instead, he decides to take a ride out on his bike.
Archie checks in on Veronica, who recalls that not too long ago, they were in his car, plotting to kill Hiram in a similarly gruesome manner. Archie remarks that they were simply angry and never would have gone through with it, but in reality, they'll never know for certain.
Britta tells Abigail about Toni
Britta informs Abigail that Toni spends much of her time at Riverdale High, where she's the guidance counselor and social justice history teacher, which doesn't surprise Abigail, as Thomasina was also a teacher. She requests that Britta take her to Riverdale High tomorrow, where Britta is to act as a Trojan horse. She then asks what led to Cheryl and Toni's breakup, but Britta isn't sure. Abigail is more shocked to learn that they were openly together, as such relationships weren't permitted in her time.
Betty informs Archie that TBK is in town and is keeping Glen somewhere, slowly killing him by dismembering him, piece by piece. Fortunately, if he comes After Betty, she should be able to see his aura. She's more worried about the townspeople. So, she'll have her mom spread the word on the news and have her team canvassing the town.
Jughead crashed his bike
Jughead can't hear what Tabitha is saying, but he can tell she is upset with him, and rightfully so, after he crashed his motorcycle. However, for those brief moments when he was cruising, all was right.
Betty gathers her team and hands out flyers alongside Agent Lin, as they explain that more than 50% of TBK's victims are from historically disenfranchised vulnerable communities. He preys on the unhoused because no one misses them. So they will be handing flyers in those communities in hopes of tracking him down.
Hermione returns
Before officially reuniting with her mother, Veronica has to first sign a release form that says she's okay with being filmed and her likeness being shown on television. After doing so, Hermione enters with the cameras rolling and dramatically embraces Veronica.
Archie is approached by one of his crewman, who hands him a piece of Palladium he found in the basement. Archie offers to split it with him as a reward, but Dennis refuses to take it from him. So, Archie allows him to keep any other palladium he comes across.
Frank notices Archie's strange behavior
Alice brews Archie and his crew a pot of fresh coffee. However, Frank and Tom notice Archie drinking his steaming hot cup without suffering any pain or burns.
Abigail goes up to Riverdale High with Britta, posing as Cheryl, and reveals to Toni that she would like to adopt her. Abigail invites Toni to Thornhill to walk her through the adoption process, but Toni has to bartend at the Wyrm, so Abigail agrees to pay her a visit instead.
Hermione and Veronica have a heart-to-heart
Hermione has invited Kevin to dinner with her, Veronica, abuelita, and Heraldo. Hermione knows that Kevin's a super fan and reveals that this extra special episode will be all about how she and Veronica are dealing with the emotional fallout of Hiram's death, but Veronica has no interest in putting on a show for the cameras. She then asks her mother if she cried when she got the news of Hiram's death. Hermione did not. Because the man she loved died many years ago. She cried when she mourned the death of her marriage, but she is through shedding tears for Hiram. Veronica asks everyone to leave and reveals to her mother that she put a bounty on Hiram's head. Hermione suspected as much. She doesn't like admitting this, but Hermione used to be jealous of Hiram and Veronica's relationship. Hermione always knew he loved Veronica more, and she feared that the same was true for Veronica, that she loved her father more. However, Veronica insists this isn't the case. Her father infuriated her, but he also had her full attention. Hermione's happiest moments were when it was just the two of them living in the Pembrooke. And then Hiram came home and took over, naming Veronica his best girl. Veronica apologizes for not being a better daughter and getting so caught up in her drama with her father. However, she would like to be a good daughter now, which there is nothing Hermione would like more.
Archie gets injured
Archie returns to the house and falls through the floorboard, during which he suffers a cut on his head, which indicates his invulnerability may be fading.
Jughead and Tabitha meet with a man named Daniel DaFoe, who, much like Jughead, experienced late life deafness. He learned to sign and read lips in his late 20s, and now he helps people with similar stories to his own. He wants to help Jughead, who hesitantly agrees.
TBK visits Betty
Betty wakes up in the field office to discover that she's been handcuffed to the couch by TBK whilst she slept. He caresses her face while referring to her as Pretty Betty and revealing that he got into the office through Glen's access card, who's still alive, at least for the time being, TBK reveals while also holding Glen's left hand as a trophy. He came to Riverdale after reading that Betty was nearly killed in an explosion. Betty's phone then rings, it's Archie, who TBK threatens to go after next. Betty encourages him to and also threatens to take on TBK herself.
Abigail asks Toni about Thomasina
Abigail meets with Toni at the bar and asks what does she know about her great-great aunt, Thomasina Topaz. All Toni knows of her is that she was a spinster schoolmarm, which Abigail takes great offense in, revealing that Thomasina lived her life passionately and drank deeply from the juices of the world until she was murdered by a warlock pirate, Fen Fogarty. Abigail flinches when they are joined by Fangs, who greatly resembles Thomasina's killer. Unaware that Cheryl is really Abigail, Toni mistakes her reaction for the fact that she and Fangs are together now. When Abigail asks how that happened, Toni reveals that they've known each other since kids and that after having a baby together, they grew closer. Abigail is in shock and excused herself. Fangs asks what that was about. Toni is unsure and remarks that Cheryl doesn't seem like herself.
Archie is weakened by palladium
Betty reveals to Archie that TBK visited her at the office, and what scared her most is that she couldn't see his aura. Maybe he's in her blind spot, she suspects. But all she knows for sure is that she keeps getting headaches. Archie reveals that something strange happened to him too. He fell through the landing earlier and got hurt, as if his powers are fading. If TBK is Betty's blind spot, she questions what is Archie's kryptonite. Archie recalls the piece of palladium that was given to him by Dennis earlier and suspects that it's the cause of his power loss, handing it over to Betty, who warns Archie that TBK is a jealous killer and that he should be careful, though unbeknownst to the two of them, TBK is listening to their entire conversation.
Hermione proposes that she and Veronica recreate a version of their conversation from last night, on camera, minus the part where she admits to killing her father. All of that was real for Veronica, and she is reluctant to retell it for cameras, but agrees nonetheless.
Nana Rose is put in the family dungeon
Abigail is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that Toni, who she repeatedly refers to as Thomasina, is in love with a descendant of Fen Fogarty, her ancestor's murderer. Britta is shocked, but Nana Rose is relieved. She reincarnated Abigail to reclaim Riverdale for the blossoms, not so that she can consort with Toni, who she refers to as "Serpent trash." Abigail grows upset with her remark, causing a storm to develop outside the house before locking Nana Rose away in the family dungeon. She assures Rose that Riverdale will be hers, as will revenge on the offspring of her enemies, but first, she must reclaim Thomasina. And she vows to bring death to anyone who stands in her way.
Daniel leaves Jughead alone in his office for five hours with pen and paper to write down his thoughts, but after five hours, Jughead has come up with nothing, not a single word. It takes time, Daniel says, without a trace of judgement. He then gives Jughead a graphic novel to read, one that Daniel had written and drawn himself about his experiences navigating deafness.
Veronica is targeted by Anatol
Veronica receives an unexpected visit from Anatol, who has been hired to kill her. He pulls out a gun and arms it with a silencer, but before he can pull the trigger, he is shot in the head and killed by Heraldo, who cleans up the body and will dispose of it tomorrow. He questions who sent the Russian. Veronica suspects it was Hermosa, in relation to her ordering the hit on their father, which Heraldo is aware of, but abuelita is not. He makes it his business to know about everything that happens in the Lodge family and makes sure none of it touches abuelita. Veronica asks how does he do what he does and then sit down with abuelita like nothing happens. He reveals that he doesn't see the world in black and white. No person is just one thing.
Jughead thanks Tabitha for never giving up on him
Jughead takes a play out of Daniel's book and starts writing his own graphic novel. When Tabitha returns home from Pop's, Jughead surprises her with the pages he's written and explains that he used to write by hearing words, but Daniel's graphic novel showed him a workaround. He could write from a visual space. Tabitha writes on an index card that she loves it, and then Jughead kisses her for never giving up on him.
Dennis hands Archie another piece of palladium and hits him over the head with a large wrench.
Betty at Sketch Alley
Betty gets a call, alerting her of TBK's whereabouts. She tracks him down to the end of Sketch Alley, where a man stands with a bag over his head. Betty draw her gun and orders him to the ground. He removes his mask and reveals a guy came by and gave him $50 to wear the mask and deliver a message to Betty, the message being for her to check the trash cans, which contain Glen's dismembered limbs.
Veronica gives her father's eulogy
Veronica hosts the memorial service at the casino as planned, where she gives her father's eulogy, as Hermione, abuelita, Heraldo, and Reggie sit in the crowd. She recalls how her father tormented her, her friends, and the town. However, on occasion, he did good things too, like donating money to finding cures for rare diseases and covering the funeral cost of Fred Andrews. Veronica loved him until the end. She wishes her father hadn't done what he did and she wishes she could sort her feelings more cleanly, but she can't. While Veronica can forgive him, she apologizes for his actions against the town and the fact that she will always love him no matter what. This brings tears both to Hermione and abuelita.
TBK captures Archie
Archie awakens to find himself restrained in the attic by TBK, who is preparing to torture him. He's not sure why, but he knows that palladium makes Archie vulnerable after eavesdropping on his conversation with Betty. He plans to use it to chop Archie up. When Alice unexpectedly arrives with Bingo, TBK orders him to get rid of her unless he wants to see Alice die too. Archie claims that he's just cleaning and that he'll come by later. Alice informs Archie that Bingo got into her closet and ruined her heels. Alice leaves Bingo at the house and exits. After she does, Bingo rushes upstairs at Archie's command and attacks TBK, knocking him through the boarded up window and on to the ground below.
Veronica says goodbye to her mom
Veronica says goodbye to her mom, who is proud of her and plans thanksgiving at the Barefoot Contessa's before leaving. After parting ways with her mother, Veronica joins Reggie, who offers to take abuelita to the airport. She thanks him for coming to the funeral, as he was the only one from the gang who did. Reggie enjoyed her eulogy, which resonated with her. Her never truly understood what type of relationship she had with her dad, and he doesn't think he has the right to judge her. What Veronica did doesn't matter because he loves her. Heraldo joins them with a recording that Hiram made during his final moments.
Betty is leaving town
After learning of his encounter with TBK, Betty questions where Archie hired Dennis. Archie explains that he must've seen the ads for a crew in Jughead newspapers and took the job as a means to keep tabs on Betty. He's clearly been watching them for some time. He knew all about Glen and their powers, but at least now they know what he looks like without his mask. And thankfully, Bingo remembered his old commands from his dog fighting days. As for Glen, Betty found most of him, including his head. So now, she needs to leave. She brought TBK to Riverdale, so he'll follow her if she leaves. She'll lead him out of town and circle back. Archie doesn't like the sound of Betty's plan, but he accepts her decision.
Veronica cries
Veronica plays the recording of her father's final moments, during which he reveals that Veronica become his treasure from the first moment he held her, and despite their troubles, she has always been the apple of his eye. Everything he did was for her. He thinks that he was testing the limits that a daughter can have for a father, and she never faltered. He never felt nothing less than love from her or for her. Lastly, he's leaving her his rum business, the crown jewel of his empire. He was never happier than when they were in their rum war. He always wanted to be a good father to Veronica and loves her very much. Veronica weeps as she hears her father's final words.
Cheryl trapped in the mirror
While brushing her hair, Abigail sees Cheryl's soul in the mirror, banging on the glass from the other side, desperate to get out. Abigail smashes the glass with a candleholder and gets up from her seat, unaware that Britta watches from the hallway.
Jughead continues to write his graphic novel when he hears Tabitha ask if she forgot to turn the oven off at Pop's. She then questions if she locked the door to the diner. However, Jughead comes to realize that she's not speaking any of this, rather he's hearing her thoughts.
