"Chapter One Hundred and Ten: Things That Go Bump in the Night" is the fifteenth episode of the sixth season of Riverdale and the one hundredth and tenth episode of the series overall.[2] It premiered on May 22, 2022.
Synopsis[]
THE GHOSTS OF RIVERDALE - After failing to get Pop's declared a historical landmark, Tabitha enlists Archie's help saving the diner from Percival. Betty opens up to Agent Drake about her ability to see people's evil auras. Meanwhile, after Reggie and the shareholders declare war on Veronica, she turns to Jughead for help maintaining control of the Babylonium. Finally, Cheryl reconnects with her childhood crush Heather, and Toni and Fangs continue their fight for custody of Baby Anthony.[3]
Plot[]
Cheryl and Heather become reacquainted after years apart. When Cheryl asks Heather about her mother, she reveals that she died in a tragic accident not long after they moved to Greendale. Heather then asks about Cheryl and whether she's seeing anyone. Cheryl mentions Toni and their past nurturing relationship, but they've both gone on to forge different paths. Much like Cheryl, Heather is single. Unfortunately, she can't stay much longer, remarking that it's almost the witching hour. But before she goes, Cheryl reveals that she's turning Thornhill into a privately owned library and asks for Heather's assistance.
Despite her best efforts to have Pop's declared a historical landmark, Tabitha reports back to Jughead and Pop that her request was denied because Percival already claimed land rights. That said, Tabitha isn't just going to give up, as the diner is the soul of Riverdale. Luckily, she possibly came up with an idea that just might buy them some time.
Betty confides in Agent Drake about how her mother looked the other way and allowed her father's evil to flourish. They even buried a body together, which rotted beneath their dining room table for decades. Much like Betty before her, Hal was groomed by his mother to be a killer as well. Agent Drake notes that Betty survived 18 years of trauma in her childhood home and suggests that she move out immediately. Betty thanks Agent Drake for the impromptu therapy session and welcomes her to the team after she requested a transfer to help with the TBK case.
Betty arrives at Archie's just as he's headed out to take Bingo for a walk. Betty asks if she can move in with him whilst she untangles her childhood trauma, and before she can even finish her thought, Archie embraces Betty and tells her that she's welcome to stay for as long as she needs to.
Toni and Fangs meet with Janet to discuss how Kevin is still pressing for full custody of Baby Anthony. As they discussed, there are certain circumstances working against them, such as the fact that they're gang members and have criminal records. However, the fact that Toni is a high school guidance counselor with a master's degree in social work does work in their favor. Regarding Fangs, he works part-time at the bar and takes care of Baby Anthony while Toni's at school in the day.
Tabitha approaches Archie with a pitch to break Pop's down and move it safely to a new location, somewhere they know for sure that Percival can't claim eminent domain. She doesn't have a location worked out yet, but they can put the diner in storage for the meantime. Percival clearly sees Pops as a threat; the symbol and headquarters of the resistance. And so, Archie agrees to assemble a crew, though they have to move fast, as Percival will begin bulldozing in a few days.
Jughead is suffering from yet another case of writer's block when he gets a message from Veronica, asking him to meet her at the Babylonium, where she reveals that Reggie and the shareholders have declared war on her. She needs money to build up her war chess, and knowing that Jughead can read minds, she's proposing they use his gift for mutual benefit, with a mentalist act. Jughead can be the seer while she works the crowd. A 60/40 split Veronica's way, she proposes, but Jughead counters with a 50/50 split and him only reading the minds of the willing.
Archie rallies a crew at the El Royale to announce that Andrews Construction is going to tear down and rebuild Pop's. Carlos asks if this is a union job, which Archie confirms that it is, which comes with all the benefits.
Fangs returns home and reveals to Toni that he joined Archie's new crew to help move Pop's, though Toni tells him that they should probably talk to Janet before making any big life changes. Nevertheless, Fangs wants to start pulling his weight and doesn't want the judge to think that he's a freeloader. Toni is flabbergasted by Fangs' notion, as she couldn't do any of this without him. Fangs simply wants to do everything he possibly can to provide for Baby Anthony, as he thinks it'll make him a better father, but Toni assures Fangs that he's already an amazing father.
Betty returns home to find Juniper and Dagwood playing with the new family pet, a cat named Butterscotch that Alice brought home for them. But when Dagwood's aura begins to glow after mentioning how much fun they're going to have playing with his tail, Betty takes the cat to safety, claiming that she's simply taking Butterscotch for a checkup.
Deconstruction is underway at Pop's when a gumball machine randomly falls to the ground and breaks, much to Tabitha's surprise.
Betty seeks out Drake for further information on the supernatural. She reveals that she recently acquired the ability to see auras around people. Drake explains that auras are the energy fields that emanate from them. Some people are more sensitive and can see those vibrations. Drake deduces that Betty can detect hostile energy fields. Last night, Betty saw an aura around Dagwood and is worried that he's having evil impulses towards their new cat, who Betty put in an animal shelter. In addition to Dagwood, Betty has seen aura around killers and people with ill intent, but there are exceptions, as Betty didn't see an aura around TBK even though he was planning to attack Archie. It's as if she has a blind spot for certain people. Drake proposes using the twins as a test case scenario. Potentially, Dagwood may have inherited the serial killer gene, and maybe that's why Betty could see his aura. Drake advises Betty to get the twins tested before investigating further.
Betty takes Juniper and Dagwood to Dr. Curdle Jr., who has agreed to test them for the MAOA gene.
Heather sets an intention for Cheryl's new library by reciting a spell whilst burning sage. Cheryl reveals that she too is a student of the arcane arts. Studying Wicca and worshiping the goddess Hecate helped Heather self actualize.
After a day's work, Archie, Fangs, and the crew have packed up most of Pop's and locked the booths and decor in the back of a moving truck. Tabitha is in disbelief at how different and bare the diner looks without the furniture. They are then interrupted by Percival and Frank, who has a job opportunity for them. His railroad project is set to begin soon, and as foreman, Frank is offering long-term jobs on the crew with higher wages and a signing bonus. Archie tries to remind Frank that they're all long-time union workers, including his dad and Frank as well. However, Fangs is the first to take the offer, reasoning that he and Toni are drowning in legal bills.
Veronica performs at the Babylonium before welcoming Jughead, now known by his stage alias Forsythe the Fantastic, to the stage. They invite a random man up to write the first number that comes to mind on a blank card, while Jughead is blindfolded and correctly recites the man's number.
When Archie and Tabitha return to the diner the following day, they discover that the truck has been emptied and all the booths and decor have been set back up inside the diner. They suspect this was Percival's doing, as he wants to destroy the diner with everything inside. And so, while Archie and the crew resume work, Tabitha goes to confront Percival.
Tabitha arrives at the Curiosity Shop and accuses Percival of taking all the furniture out of the truck and putting it back inside the diner, but Percival claims to have no knowledge of her accusations, reminding Tabitha that he wants her gone more than anything. But Tabitha isn't convinced, knocking a vase on to the ground on her way out.
Carlos and Sam investigate the jukebox when it randomly turns on as they break down the diner. However, in attempting to move it, Sam is electrocuted.
Betty gets a call from Dr. Curdle, who has the twins' test results, revealing that Juniper surprisingly has the gene whilst Dagwood does not. And so, Betty and Drake begin to assemble a board to better visualize their investigation. Drake suspects that Betty's power may be counterintuitive, meaning those who have the serial killer gene are susceptible to her blind spot. The serial killer gene produces a special enzyme, and maybe it's masking Betty's ability to detect the aura. Betty recalls seeing Trevor Collins' aura at the hospital, as well as Cheryl's when she was possessed by Abigail. Before getting them tested for the gene, Betty first wants to get the twins out of the house, away from her mom. If the twins have any inclination to violence and mayhem, Betty doesn't want them around her mother, who is also in deep with Percival.
Reggie was impressed with Veronica's act with Jughead and demands a 20% cut. If she refuses, he threatens to expose Veronica for placing a hit on Hiram.
Toni returns home to find their new car out front. Once inside, Fangs reveals that he used his signing bonus as a down payment after joining Percival's crew, much to Toni's concern, as she warns Fangs that Percival is evil and suspects that he may have even been involved in Baby Anthony's kidnapping. Furthermore, people are claiming he can control minds, but Archie has already warned Fangs to use an emotional tether to prevent Percival from controlling him. Baby Anthony will be his tether.
Heather reads Cheryl's cards. Her first card is The Queen of Wands, which represents a new strength or ability discovered. The next card is The Lovers. Cheryl yearns for connection, intimacy, and love, to which she replies that they all do. However, her final card is The Tower, which promises disaster, carnage and war, but Cheryl doesn't appear phased. "Welcome to Riverdale," she retorts.
Tabitha meets with Archie at Riverdale General, where he informs her that one of his guys got electrocuted while moving the jukebox. Archie suspects frayed wiring, but Tabitha had it serviced two months ago.
Jughead has gotten past his writer's block, an unexpected bonus from helping Veronica. However, he is interrupted from his writing when Veronica comes over and reveals that Reggie is blackmailing her. She was wondering if Jughead is capable of erasing minds and hopes that he can wipe the memory of Reggie learning that she put a hit on her father, which doesn't seem to bother Jughead much. While he's not sure if what she's asking is possible, he agrees to at least do some research.
Tabitha arrives outside of Pop's to find the diner lights on and workers servicing customers inside. However, when she enters through the door, all that remains is a hot pot of coffee, a half-eaten slice of pie, and a couple milkshakes.
Tabitha alerts Archie that the diner is haunted by ghosts. She even checked with her grandpa, who confirmed that people have in fact died at the diner. However, the diner is the least of Archie's worries, as he's been getting calls all morning. Sam's electrocution was a tipping point, and his crew have quit to work with Percival and Frank. Tabitha will figure out their ghost problem whilst Archie devises a plan to get the crew back.
Archie meets with Frank at the Wyrm. If Archie's dad was there with them, he'd remind them that they're blood and make them find a way back to each other. Archie then pulls out an old childhood photo of Frank and his dad. While they may disagree, there are two things that they both love — Pop's diner and Andrews Construction. Archie is asking that they put their differences aside, at least until they move the diner.
Betty reports to Drake that neither Trevor nor Cheryl have the serial killer gene. Based on all the information they've gathered, their best guess is that her blind spot is the MAOA gene. It's presence short circuits her ability. Reading auras is part psychological and part biological. Now that they've established a working theory on why she has a blind spot, her brain may process, absorb and perceive auras differently. On a separate, Drake is curious on how well Betty is transitioning after having moved in with Archie.
Desperate and out of resources, Tabitha goes to Cheryl for help. There, she makes Heather's acquaintance, who comes to the conclusion that Tabitha is experiencing a classic haunting. The ghost likely haven't moved on because they're afraid of what awaits them in the afterlife or have unfinished business in the mortal realm. Heather has experience with communicating with spirits and offers to help Tabitha make contact with them and help them move on.
Tabitha, Cheryl, and Heather go to Pop's, where Heather recites a spell to invoke the spirits, four of them in total. A waitress named Gilda reveals that they're bound to the diner and must bear witness to the battle that approaches between good and evil. Only then can they complete their journey. Tabitha asks them to at least stop sabotaging the move, but Gilda explains that they must protect the diner, as it is the final battleground. There can be no disruption. Tabitha explains that Percival wants to destroy the land and cripple the resistance by building a train. Gilda is frightened by the mention of a train, suspecting that Percival is building the Ghost train, an engine that grants its conductor great power and dominion over the realm of the living and the dead. Gilda concedes, but explains that the diner cannot remain broken down for long. If it is, they will dissipate into the ether, and if that happens, there will be no witnesses, and the final battle can not take place. And there will be no opportunity to defeat the Eldritch evil. Tabitha can disassemble Pops, but only if she finds another location as quickly as possible.
Betty is confronted by Alice after she learns that Betty took the twins from her. Betty claims that there's evil in the house and that she's trying to protect them from growing up the same way she did. Alice is insulted, questioning if Betty cares about other people's feelings or if she even has feelings. All the sacrifices she's made were never enough for Betty. She always had to conjure up villains to explain everything that's wrong with her, but Alice accuses her of being the villain. It's then that Betty sees her mother's aura. Despite everything she did as a mother, Alice claims that Betty has always been a bad person. She hopes that Betty is never a mother so that she doesn't have to experience half the things Betty had made her endure.
Tabitha asks if they can set up the diner at the El Royale so that Pop's continuum isn't interrupted, though this means that the center may be haunted for a time. Fortunately, Archie isn't afraid of ghosts. Neither is Frank, who interrupts to inform Archie that he was right about everything he said at the bar about coming together to save Pop's. So, Frank and a few of the guys are willing to call in sick to help Archie move the diner.
As they prepare for bed, Archie shares with Betty how he and Uncle Frank have settled their differences. Archie hopes that this means Betty can fix her relationship with her mother as well. As for Pop's, they're moving everything out the following day. Betty offers to give a hand, as she may have some free time after handling a couple of things.
After doing some research, Jughead discovers that what Veronica is asking of him is something called telepathic erasure — the removal of specific images and thoughts from someone's memory. To do it, the victim has to either be asleep or distracted so that their subconscious is unguarded. So, when Reggie counts his cut of the money from Veronica, Jughead goes into Reggie's mind. Much like with Betty, Jughead is sitting at a desk, where he goes through Reggie's memories, which are configured to resemble a collection of comic books. Jughead tears a page from the comic where Reggie learns that Veronica killed her dad. After realizing that Jughead successfully removed the memory, Veronica takes the money back from Reggie. He threatens to expose Veronica to Percival but can no longer remember what he was blackmailing her with.
Archie, Tabitha, and Frank arrive outside of Pop's to find that the booths and most of the furniture has already been moved outside for them, which Tabitha presumes was done by the ghosts of Pop's. Frank and Carlos being loading the truck while the others start dismantling the diner.
Cheryl was already impressed with Heather's knowledge of the supernatural but what she did back at Pop's was death magic, better known as necromancy. Heather reveals that after her mother died, she was taken in by a powerful coven in Greendale. She's not just Wiccan. She's a witch, and based on what she's observed, she suspects that Cheryl may be a witch as well. Cheryl hasn't used that word to describe herself yet but she's been dancing around the word for months, if not years. She then reveals to Heather that she's pyrokinetic and asks Heather to teach her the witch's way.
Reggie informs Percival that he thinks Jughead and Veronica made him forget something, but he's not sure what. Percival suspects that Jughead's telepathic abilities have gotten stronger since they've first manifested.
Betty arrives at Pop's to help, but when she approaches Frank, she notices his red aura and rushes inside to inform Archie, who returns to the parking lot with Betty and accuses Frank of attempting to destroy everything in the truck by either dumping it in Sweetwater River or burning the truck. Frank refuses to hand over the keys and punches Archie with palladium in his hand, unaware that Archie is now invulnerable. Archie advises Frank to leave and tells him to warn Percival that he's invulnerable again and ready to fight.
Archie, Tabitha, and Pop arrive at The El Royale, which they've turned into Pop's diner. And thankfully, it's still a refuge for lost souls and the ghosts of Pop's remained tethered. When the final battle happens, it will be witnessed by the living and the dead, Tabitha remarks.
When Fangs arrives home, he finds dinner awaiting. Toni wanted to apologize for not having enough faith in Fangs. Her whole life, she's been fiercely independent, thinking she can take on everything herself, but now she realizes they need to be equal partners in every way, which is why Toni proposes they get married. When Fangs asks where this is coming from, Toni recalls her sit down with Janet, where they discussed how Toni and Fangs have been at odds often. Janet informed Toni that one of their biggest advantages over Kevin was that the court saw them as a happy, stable couple. Going into the hearing, they needed to be stronger together, or else they could lose baby Anthony. With that in mind, Toni lies to Fangs and tells him that she simply hears what he has been saying and asks again if he will marry her.
Betty reconvenes with Drake and says they were wrong about the serial killer gene being her blind spot, as she saw an aura around her mom, who has the gene. Drake explains that Betty's powers are a byproduct of trauma. And her most recent discovery about her mom is more trauma. Drake suspects this could be a natural expansion of her ability, sensing anyone who poses a danger, physical or emotional. However, she wasn't the only one. Betty saw another aura on someone who she previously didn't, someone who also has the serial killer gene, that someone being Betty. She saw the aura around herself in the mirror as Archie slept in bed the previous night.
