Archie: "Jughead you can talk to me about anything. You're like...You're like my brother."
Jughead: "Nice bro whisper, Archie. You are my brother."
―Jughead and Archie have a talk[src]

The relationship between Archie Andrews and Jughead Jones is complicated and pre-dates the series. They were best friends up until a falling-out in the summer of 2017 after Archie canceled their road trip at the last minute. Which Jughead later on in season one found out he ditched him for hooking up with Geraldine Grundy, the school music teacher. Their relationship improves over the course of the first season until Archie admits to investigating FP's trailer.

History

Archie and Jughead were best friends since childhood. Fred recalled Archie sneaking out at night to go to Jughead's treehouse.

They were supposed to go on a road trip over the weekend of July 4th, but Archie canceled at the last minute to hook up with Geraldine Grundy, with whom he was having an affair. Sometime afterwards, Jughead and Archie got into a serious fight that disrupted their friendship. They lost touch and never attempted to make up, and their first conversation since the fight is a tense encounter after Archie runs into him at the Chock'lit Shoppe while looking for Betty.

Throughout Riverdale

Season 1

After Archie and Veronica kissed at Cheryl's after party, Archie went looking for a heartbroken Betty to apologize, which led him to Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe where he found Jughead, sitting alone. Archie awkwardly walked over to his old friend and asked to sit in the booth with him. They talked about Jason's death and Jughead gave him a piece of advice, to just talk to Betty because it could go a long way; it would have gone a long way with him.[1]

At school, Jughead had a brief conversation with Archie in the hallway, where his sardonic humor over Jason Blossom's death fell short with Archie. Before heading off to class, Jughead recalled that he and Archie were supposed to go on a road trip during the summer, over July 4th weekend, which was the day Jason was thought to have been murdered. Archie happened to bail on at the last minute, which led Jughead to believe that Archie was hiding something.

Season 1 Episode 2 A Touch of Evil Jughead vs Archie

Jughead confront's Archie.

Jughead found out what Archie was hiding, when he discovered Archie was having a secret affair with his music teacher, Ms. Grundy. He stumbled upon them as they were in a close embrace, leading Jughead to confront Archie later that day at the Andrews house. Archie revealed that he and Ms. Grundy had been in a relationship since the summer and that they were both at Sweetwater River on July 4th, when Jason was ostensibly killed. They heard a gunshot that day, which Jughead urged Archie to report to the police, but he resisted, having been manipulated by Ms. Grundy into keeping this information to himself for fear their relationship would be discovered. Jughead claimed that she cared more about herself than she did Archie, the fact that she was the one who told him to keep quiet only supported Jughead's claim. Scared that Jughead would reveal his secret, Archie began to threaten him, but Jughead cut him off, wondering what exactly he would do. Before he left, Jughead remarked that although the Archie he used to know wasn't perfect, he at least tried to do the right thing.

Season 1 Episode 2 Archie Jughead 2

Archie sticks up for Jughead.

Despite the rift between them, when Reggie Mantle began picking on Jughead in the school lounge, accusing him of being Jason's killer, Archie immediately stepped up to protect his friend which resulted in a fistfight with Reggie. Jughead tried to help Archie by separating them, however, he was grabbed by one of the other football players, preventing him from stopping the fight and had to watch as Archie was knocked out.
Season 1 Episode 2 Archie Jughead

Archie and Jughead rekindle their friendship.

Archie later approached Jughead at the annual fall Pep Rally to inform him that he would be taking his knowledge of the gunshot to the police. Archie then apologized for the stuff he had said to Jughead the previous night. Jughead accepted his apology, which marked the beginning of them rebuilding their fractured friendship. To celebrate, they headed to Pop's Shoppe for milkshakes, where they ran into Betty and Veronica, who welcomed the boys to join them.[2]

Jughead attended the Taste of Riverdale event to question Dilton Doiley, where he met up with Archie who had snuck in, despite being grounded, in order to listen to the song that he helped Josie and the Pussycats write. Jughead admitted that the song wasn't too bad.[3]

Jughead was seated in a booth with Betty, Veronica, and Kevin at Pop's when Archie entered the diner with his father and Ms. Grundy. Betty immediately went to speak to Archie, as she had recently found out about Archie's affair with his teacher. Jughead hid low in his booth as Archie asked Betty if Jughead had been the one to tell her, though he hadn't, she had figured it out on her own. The next day at school, Archie asked Jughead how hard it would have been for a heads-up, and if Betty would be writing about him and Grundy in the paper like she did with Chuck Clayton. Jughead explained that not getting involved in the situation with him, Betty and Ms. Grundy was the most moral, apathetic choice he could've made. He also mentioned that Archie had nothing to worry about, as Jughead assured him that Betty would "never do anything that could possibly hurt him - probably". He then asked Archie what he saw happening long-term with Ms. Grundy, what Archie wanted out of it. Archie stated that he wanted to be with her for as long as he could, and asked Jughead to warn him if Betty did decide to do something about his secret.[4]

Archie later discovered that ver since the closing of the Twilight Drive-In, Jughead had been living out of a forgotten closet under a staircase at the High School. Jughead explained that things weren't good at home, and that his dad had fallen off the wagon after Fred Andrews fired him from Andrews Construction, and his mother had left with Jellybean to live with their grandparents a while back. Archie invited him to stay at his place, but Jughead declined, asserting his situation was only temporary. He also insisted that Archie not tell anyone, especially not Betty, which perplexed Archie. Later on in the student lounge, Archie noticed a moment shared between Jughead and Betty and was taken aback and a bit jealous.

Afterward, Archie caught up with Jughead and confronted him about the comment he had earlier made about not telling Betty about his living situation. Archie surmised that this was due to the fact that Jughead and Betty were now a couple, and Jughead admitted there was something between him and Betty. Archie said it was cool then quickly changed the subject. He had stated that he had spoken to his father about Jughead's situation, and Fred was willing to give Jughead's father another chance, but only if FP wanted it. Archie thought it would be a good idea if Jughead went to talk to FP as well. After he did, FP accepted Fred's offer.

Season 1 Episode 7 Archie Jughead

Archie and Jughead at Pop's.

After a long first day back at work, Archie and Jughead suggested they celebrate with a dinner at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe, where the two fathers reminisced about their youth, much to the amusement of their sons. Later that night, FP, Jughead, and Archie practiced playing music in the garage at the Andrews house. Before the Joneses left Archie wanted to know what had happened between FP and his father, and FP explained that Fred forced him to resign after he took up some odd jobs in order to provide for his family, which eventually landed him in jail. Fred was kind enough to bail him out, but at that point, Fred wanted to part ways. Shocked, Archie went and confronted his father who claimed that FP had been stealing from the company and selling things on the side, and all things considered, Fred believed he was being generous. He gave FP numerous chances, bailing him out of jail countless times, but when someone was drowning, Fred didn't believe you could save them if they were going to drag you down with them. However, Archie didn't believe it was fair for Jughead to drown too.

The next morning, Jughead was taken into custody and brought down to the Sheriff Station by Sheriff Keller, as a suspect in Jason's murder. He and Betty’s fingerprints were found on Jason’s torched car that they had previously discovered, which was expected. However, Jughead had a surprising juvie record from six years prior when he almost burned down Riverdale Elementary School which, according to Jughead, was an accident - he had just been playing with matches. Fred and Archie came to his aid, and Fred told Sheriff Keller that Jughead was working for his construction company on July 11th, which led to the Andrews later falsifying a time-card to prove. Jughead’s father showed up at the station just as everyone was leaving and caused a scene in front of Fred, Archie, and Betty. Jughead convinced him to let it go, and Archie once again extended an invitation for Jughead to live with him, until FP sorted himself out. In the end, Jughead went to live at the Andrew’s house and Archie apologized about how things went with their fathers.[5]

After a late night of gaming, Fred entered Archie's room to inform the boys that it was time to call it a night, as he would be breaking ground on the SoDale project early the next morning. He asked Jughead how he was settling in, and Jughead compared himself and Archie to college dorm mates.

Season 1 Episode 8 Archie Jug

Archie and Jughead help out at Andrews Construction

. Come morning, Fred had been abandoned by his crew, who had been lured away by Cliff Blossom in hopes of halting construction. Archie, Jughead, Kevin, and Moose Mason volunteered to aid Fred in keeping the SoDale project on schedule until he could find a real crew. Jughead commented how handy Archie was with a wheel barrel, joking that if his music career never paid off, he could always have manual labor as a fallback. As the day came to an end, the boys returned to the trailer. However, Moose realized he had forgotten his phone back on the project site. As he went to retrieve it, he was ambushed by two thugs, who warned them to stop construction or else they'd be back. While Fred thought that Cliff Blossom was at the center of the attack, Archie speculated that it could've been the Southside Serpents, who were angry due to being kicked off their territory. Jughead than reminded everyone that the Serpents never bothered him when the drive-in was still up and running.

The next day, Archie found Jughead with Betty and Veronica at Pop's, and asked for Jughead's help as he, Moose and Kevin planned on finding the supposed Serpents that attacked Moose. Kevin's boyfriend, Joaquin, who was also a Serpent, could get them into the Whyte Wyrm - a known hangout for the gang. They planned to find Moose's attackers and notify Sheriff Keller. However, Jughead insisted that going to the bar was a terrible idea, but all Archie wanted to know was if Jughead would back him up. Jughead stated that he wouldn't, and Archie left angry.

At the bar, Archie did not find the assailants but instead found Jughead's father, leader of the Serpents, and realized that was the reason Jughead didn't want Archie going to the bar. Angry at being lied to, Archie unexpectedly crashed Polly Cooper's Baby Shower and confronted Jughead, who tried to calm Archie down claiming he could explain everything. Archie didn't want to hear it and revealed Jughead's secret to Veronica and Betty. Veronica told then to stop, to settle their fight another time as it was Polly's day, and escorted Archie out. Later that night, Jughead returned to the Andrews house, where he admitted that he should've trusted Archie, but he was afraid that his father was at the center of the attack. Archie understood where Jughead was coming from, saying that they were brothers and that they would always be there for each other.[6]

Days later, in the student lounge, Archie announced to the group that he could be attending an exclusive summer music program with the help of the Blossoms. Jughead questioned their motives for doing so, and Archie explained that all he had to do was escort Cheryl to her family's maple tree tapping event. However, Jughead did not think it was a good idea to be getting involved with the Blossoms, asking if Val was cool with him being a Gigolo. Archie disagreed, and explained that if he wanted to succeed with his music, he had to make connections outside of Riverdale. Jughead, Archie, and Fred ate dinner together a couple night's later, after Archie had attended the Blossom event. They were momentarily joined by Cheryl, who dropped by to gift Archie with an expensive guitar as thanks for agreeing to escort her to a second event, which Jughead referred to as Archie pimping himself out.

After attending the second event, Archie finally realized what everyone meant about him not getting involved with the Blossoms. He went to see Jughead and Betty at The Blue and Gold offices and revealed a conversation he had overheard between Cliff and Penelope Blossom the night before. He revealed that Clifford Blossom might have been responsible for sending Hiram Lodge, Veronica's father, to jail. Jughead remarked that perhaps Hiram had taken his revenge by killing Jason Blossom, and added Hiram's name to their murder board.[7]

For the last few years, on Jughead's birthday, he and Archie would go to the Bijou for a double-feature, it became their tradition. However, since he had a girlfriend this year, Archie thought it should be Betty who accompanied him to the movies. She agreed and thought they should throw Jughead a surprise party as well, as she had been told by FP that he had never had a party before. Veronica and Kevin thought it was a great idea, but Archie, didn't think so as he knew Jughead hated his birthday. He eventually went along with the plan, even offering his house to host the party, stating that it would be epic.

After school, Archie informed Jughead that this year Jughead would be going to the movies with Betty this year. Jughead became a little upset that Archie had told her about his birthday, to Archie wondered why, exactly, he hated his birthday so much. Jughead explained that it was leftover from when he was a kid. His home life wasn't that good, usually on account of his father, and he found pretending everything was great one day of the year very meaningless and just made him feel lonely.

Season 1 Episode 10 The Lost Weekend Party (3)

Jughead Suprise Birthday Party

The next night, Archie, Veronica, KevinJoaquin and Ethel surprised Jughead as he returned home from the double-feature with Betty. Regrettably, Jughead was less than thrilled about his party. Just when Jughead thought the night could not get any worse, the doorbell rang and the entire school was at the front door, led by Cheryl and Chuck Clayton, all ready to party. Despite knowing Jughead was upset, Archie let everyone in, causing Jughead to angrily walk away. He had retreated to the garage with the Andrews dog, Vegas, where he was later found by Archie. Jughead confronted him, of the opinion that it was Archie's responsibility to ensure that a party like that never happened on his birthday. Archie, however, told him it was Betty's idea and he had just gone along with it. While a party like that was not Jughead's style, Archie informed him that since he was Betty's boyfriend he would be getting the party whether he wanted it or not.

The morning after, Jughead was having breakfast while Archie cleaned up the mess from the party. Jughead teased him about Veronica, who he had seen come out of Archie's room earlier. Archie began to ask him not to say anything before Jughead cut him off and promised he "wouldn't be telling anyone anything, literally ever".[8]

Fred Andrews' Shooting

Archie, Veronica, Betty, and Jughead at Graduation

Archie and Jughead appeared alongside Betty, and Veronica in one of Fred Andrews' hallucinatory visions following the shooting at Pop's. Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica were in their caps and gowns, prepared for graduation. In the student lounge, they stood collectively, waiting for Fred to take a photo of them. Next to Fred, was Archie's mother, Mary Andrews. Fred commented that he didn't think he would live to see the day, to which Jughead replied that he didn't, meaning he didn't survive the attack at Pop's. Before Fred could respond, the shooter appeared at the scene. As he entered the lounge with his weapon drawn, Fred yelled for everyone to go down, before a gunshot was heard.

After learning that Archie's father was shot by a hooded gunman, Jughead raced down to Riverdale General Hospital on his motorcycle. Once there, he ran into Betty and Veronica before embracing Archie into a group hug. After settling down, they sat around him as he recounted the events at the diner — Archie came out the bathroom to find a hooded man pointing a gun at Pop Tate, then at his dad. He fired the gun, then bolted, leaving a bloody Fred on the floor. However, Archie's momentary pause left Jughead wondering if he wasn't coming forward with all that had happened. While Archie held his bleeding father, Pop Tate called the ambulance, but when they didn't come, Archie took it upon himself to drive him all the way to the hospital. However, now he was now questioning this decision as he thought he may have made matters worse. Jughead insisted that Archie did the right thing, saying that first, he saved Cheryl, now his father. If he kept it up, he might need a superhero name, Jughead proposed 'Pureheart the Powerful'.

RD-Caps-2x01-A-Kiss-Before-Dying-40-Sheriff-Keller-Archie-Jughead

Archie and Jughead with Sheriff Keller

Sheriff Keller arrived at the hospital to question Archie shortly after her called his mother to alert her of the shooting. Jughead joined them as Archie recounted the moments leading up to Fred's shooting. According to Archie, the shooter was 5' 10 and approximately 160lbs. Archie added that he was wearing a dark jacket. Sheriff Keller hoped that he would elaborate on this. So, he asked if the jacket had any symbols or patches, leading Jughead to conclude that like others, Keller also suspected the Serpents' involvement. Fortunately, by Archie account, there wasn't a snake to be found on the jacket. After Archie described the shooter's green eyes and the hood that her was wearing, Sheriff Keller asked of him to fill the gaps in Pop Tate's story. However, just like before, Archie was hesitant in his telling of the incident, which Jughead undoubtedly noticed. Sheriff Keller suspected the shooter of being a thug from the Southside that was high on drugs and looking to make some fast money. How much money did he get away with, Jughead asked. A question that Sheriff Keller did not have the answer to just yet. Since it was Riverdale they were talking about, a town with a dark and violent history, Jughead felt compelled to ask what if robbery wasn't the motive. Sheriff Keller speculated that maybe the shooter was someone who held a grudge against Fred, but wanted to make it seems like a robbery. However, it was too early in the case to know with certainty.

As the two of them returned to the lobby, Jughead confronted Archie on withholding information from Sheriff Keller. Archie admitted that this was true. Apparently, Fred and Hermione fired the Serpents they had working on their crew. While Archie was aware that FP vouched for them, he couldn't help but consider the possibility that maybe one of them was angry enough to retaliate. Realizing that this could very well be true, Jughead volunteered to look around the Southside for answers. He then shared one last hug with Archie before exiting the hospital.

Later that day, Archie revealed to Jughead (and Betty and Veronica) that he wasn't the hero that they believed him to be. After the masked attacker shot Fred, Archie revealed that he stood there and did nothing, as he was paralyzed with fear. He didn't move an inch, not even when the shooter held a gun to his head. He shut his eyes and kept the, shut until hearing the bell on Pop's door ring. Archie perceived his actions as cowardice, but Jughead, Betty, and Veronica begged to differ as there was nothing else he could've done.

While Fred laid in the hospital bed unconscious, Archie and Jughead appeared in another one of hiss dreams. But this time Jughead was the best man at Archie and Veronica's Scottish themed wedding. Jughead stood alongside Archie as Veronica approached the altar. However, the dream came to an abrupt end as the hooded assailant appeared and fired his gun.[9]

The gang at school

At school, Jughead told Archie, Betty, and Veronica about the vandalism at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe and how Pop's staff to quit on him. Pop Tate wasn't sure how much longer he would be able to keep the doors open. Maybe not even a week. Archie concluded that this was because of his father's shooting. People were frightened, not that he blamed them. Archie had no plans on returning to the diner either. While it had seemed that they were willing to accept the closing of Pop's shoppe once and for all, Betty was much less willing to surrender. With Betty and Veronica taking point on saving Pop's, Jughead told them that he had to leave as he had to meet with his father's court-appointed lawyer, who was far from qualified for the task. Archie decided to join Jughead as he too had business at the Sheriff Station; he needed to drop some flyers off of the black hooded assailant.

Archie scaring Jughead

That night, as Archie kept guard of both the front and back door, he began to doze off until hearing footstep approach from the back. With his baseball bat in hand, Archie slowly entered the kitchen, nearing the back door as the intruder proceeded to enter the house. However, he would soon discover that the "intruder" was actually Jughead, who had been walking around all night, trying to wrap his head around how much time his father was facing. Twenty years, Jughead said. And that's if FP took the deal. If he didn't and the case went to trial, he'd be facing forty. Jughead expressed how terrified he was, though he wasn't the only one. Archie was dealing with fears of his own in relation to his father's shooter.

Both Archie and Jughead attended Retro Night, the organized event by Betty in show of support for Pop Tate and the diner. As the night came to an end Jughead, Archie, Betty and Veronica shared a booth, during which time they relished in their victory; a rare win for the good guys.[10]

The gang discussing Moose and Midge's shooting

After learning that Moose and Midge were attacked at Lover's Lane by an black hood wearing assailant, Jughead arrived at school, where he met with his friends to discuss the recent shooting. Given that Kevin found Moose and Midge, Archie wondered what he was doing in the woods, to begin with given that he could've been shot as well. Kevin claimed that he was night jogging. Now that another shooting has taken place, Archie hoped that they all could finally agree that there was a killer in Riverdale. However, with so much uncertainty surrounding recent events, Betty wasn't convinced that the latest shooting was in any way tied to Ms. Grundy' murder. Veronica then interrupted to invite them all over to her place to officially meet her father.

Archie, Betty, and Jughead meeting Veronica's father

As planned, Jughead, Archie and Betty met up at the Pembrooke to watch the Matchlerette and officially meet Veronica's father. However, Archie was distracted by the recent shooting. He expressed his frustration with Sheriff Keller and his inability to apprehend the shooter. He started to feel as if they were being specifically targeted by the killer. Veronica instructed him to keep his voice down but Jughead on the other hand wanted to hear more, stating that "Archie going Travis Bickle is my favorite Archie yet". It was then that Mr. and Mrs. Lodge entered the room to greet everyone before leaving for dinner. They were each introduced Veronica's father, starting with Betty, then Jughead and finally Archie. Mr. Lodge couldn't help but overhear their discussion in regards to Sheriff Keller's shortcomings. For someone who's had his own share of run-ins with the law, he could confidentially say that the police weren't always the answer. [11]

Friends Divided

RD-Caps-2x05-When-a-Stranger-Calls-112-Jughead-Archie

Jughead asking Archie to leave the trailer park

After completing the first three trials earlier that week, Jughead prepared for the fourth and final trial as part of his initiation into the Southside Serpents, better known as the gauntlet. Jughead exited his trailer find Archie approaching to deliver some news. Before he could get a word out, Jughead attempted to get Archie to leave, as Sweet Pea and the others were on their way. Unfortunately, the Serpents rounded the corner just as he was pleading with Archie to leave. That moment, Archie learned that not only was Jughead friends with the guys that attacked him, he was also joining the Serpents. Jughead asked if Archie was there to warn him, but Archie revealed that he had stopped by to inform Jughead that Betty was breaking up with him. Though, Jughead had a hard time believing this considering he had just seen Betty the day before. Archie claimed that she'd been wanting to end it ever since he crossed over to the dark side, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. Because of this, she sent Archie. She saw where Jughead was headed, as did they all. He couldn't be a Northsider and a Southsider. Realizing that it's over between him and Betty, Jughead told Archie that the message had been received. He then turned around to see the Serpents watching as it all unfolded, asking if they enjoyed the show.[12]

Street Racers: Serpents vs Ghoulies

Archie warning Jughead about the raid

While talking to Mr. Phillips at Southside High, Jughead got a text from Archie, telling Jughead to meet him outside, in a rather urgent tone. Jughead, meanwhile, was still in conversation with Robert Phillips about the article he just wrote for the Red and Black when he excused himself out of the room. In the hallway, Archie told Jughead that they needed to leave because a raid of the school was happening. As if on cue, Mayor McCoy and Sheriff Keller barged into the school, pointing left and right, arresting anyone wearing the logo of the Southside Serpents. Jughead and Archie ran out the through fire exit, as Sweet Pea and Toni were handcuffed and taken into custody.

Archie and Jughead at Pop's

After narrowly escaping the raid, Archie and Jughead convened at Pop's, where Archie urged Jughead to calm down, but Jughead was irate with Riverdale becoming a police state. Archie explained that Mayor McCoy was convinced that the Serpents were responsible for the influx in Jingle Jangle. But Jughead insisted that the dealing was the working of a rival gang, the Ghoulies. Archie suggested that he relay this news to Mayor McCoy, though Jughead wasn't convinced that she would listen considering that she just arrested his friends without reason. Jughead was confused as to why Archie even cared to begin with since he made it perfectly clear that he and Betty wanted nothing to do with Jughead ever since he'd crossed over to the "dark side". Archie apologized for their fall out. As for Betty, he suggested Jughead have a talk with her. However, Jughead had to leave after receiving a message from Tall Boy.

Jughead telling Archie about the alliance between the Serpents and the Ghoulies

Jughead returned to the trailer after his meeting with Tall Boy and the Ghoulies to inform Archie of the recent developments. Despite what he was being led to believe, the alliance with the Ghoulies wasn't an alliance at all, rather a hostile take over. Jughead proposed that he stall until Sweet Pea and Toni were released from police custody. He hoped that once they were out, they would rather go to war with the Ghoulies than start dealing Jingle Jangle. Though, Archie reminded him that his entire purpose for joining the Serpents was to prevent war, rather than participate in it. While this may have been true, his father would never allow such an unholy union to take place, so neither would Jughead. While Archie didn't have any better ideas, he figured FP would, so the two of them headed down to the prison to pay him a visit.

RD-Caps-2x06-Death-Proof-63-Archie-Jughead

Archie and Jughead talking to FP

The next day, at the prison, Archie and Jughead spoke to FP from behind the glass. FP told them that while Ghoulies dressed like fops, they were a nasty crew. However, the Serpents had survived much worse. Unfortunately for Archie and Jughead, the Ghoulies had them out numbered, meaning they had to avoid bloodshed at all cost by out thinking them, which Archie agreed with. The battle was over territory. The one thing Ghoulles loved above all else were their souped-up retro cars and hearses. FP informed the boys to challenge the Ghoulies to a one-on-one street race, but to keep it quiet. Should the police learn of the race, they'd all be locked up. As for the terms of the race, if the Ghoulies won, the Serpents would surrender, but if the Serpents won, the Ghoulies would have to back off, and they'd gain control of Southside High, thus bringing an end to the Ghoulies hold and the Jingle Jangle, as well as getting Mayor McCoy off their backs.

RD-Caps-2x06-Death-Proof-83-Archie-Jughead-Malachai

Archie and Jughead negotiating with Malachai

On FP's advice, Archie and Jughead returned to the Ghoulies lair, otherwise known as the House of the Dead, to challenge the Ghoulies leader, Malachai, to a race. Jughead explained that If they won, Serpents would remain autonomous and Ghoulies would have to quit dealing at Southside High. However, if the Ghoulies won, the Serpents fold, and they could continue to pollute the Southside with their "little straws of death". Though, with the Ghoulies having little to actually gain from the arrangement Jughead presented, Malachai wasn't interested in his offer, unless he was willing to put up some of the Serpents' territory. It was then that Betty and Veronica were brought into the room after they were caught by the Ghoulies, trying to sneak in through the garage. After learning that Betty and Veronica were with them, Malachai wanted all four of them out. In a last ditch effort, Jughead offered up the Whyte Wyrm if Malachai agreed to the race. Malachai agreed, but only after adding on the Sunnyside Trailer Park.

RD-Caps-2x06-Death-Proof-117-Archie-Jughead

Archie and Jughead racing the Ghoulies

During the tenure of Drag Race, Archie was Jughead's companion in the competition against Malachai and Verne. The race was to take place over Herk Harvey bridge to Dead Man's curve. First one back to the starting point won. Cheryl took to the center of the road as the flag girl, asking both drivers if they were ready before waving her flag, signaling the start of the race. Jughead took a momentary lead as the rival gang sped down the road. With Malachai repeatedly ramming their vehicle, Archie and Jughead didn't hold that lead for long. As they approached the bridge, Archie advised Jughead to fall back because it was too narrow for both vehicles to cross, though Jughead refused to back down, "the serpents are joining the Ghoulies over my dead body, Archie". With Herk Harvey bridge approaching fast, Archie pulled the emergency break against Jughead's wishes, forcing the car to a stop as the Ghouiles crossed over. Furious over Archie's interference, Jughead demanded to know why he would do such a thing. Archie explained that Jughead would thank him for it. As police sirens began to ring, Archie and Jughead followed the sirens over the bridge to find that Malachai had been stopped by Sheriff Keller and the police department.

Archie and Jughead returned to the starting point to inform everyone that they needed to leave immediately, as the police were just down the road. Tall Boy accused Jughead of calling the police, but Archie confessed to calling Sheriff Keller, and alerting him of the race. It was his idea to get rid of the Ghoulies. They got arrested for street racing, and now they were no longer a concern. However, as Jughead explained, they wouldn't be gone long for over a street racing charge, and when they got out, they'd want all of their heads on a stake.[13]

The Path to Reconciliation

After getting roped in with the Snake Charmer despite his father's warnings, Jughead headed down to Riverdale High School to ask for Archie's help and his father's truck. Jughead requested that Archie refrain from asking questions given that Archie owed him for the deal he made involving Sheriff Keller and the Ghoulies.

That night, Archie and Jughead went down to a shipping yard, where within a shipping container, they found the crate of drugs that they were supposed to be transporting to Greendale for Penny Peabody. The two of them grabbed the crate from opposite sides, loaded it into the back of the truck, and drove off. While Archie was willing to see the deal through, he had to ask where does Jughead being a Serpent end. However, this was a question that not even Jughead could answer, as he was living minute to minute. Archie then told Jughead of a post graduation idea he had. Instead of going to college, they'd move to New York after graduation, where he'd be a musician and Jughead a writer, both living somewhere like the east village. As for Betty and Veronica in this scenario, they were roommates in park avenue. But on a more serious note, Archie was concerned that if Jughead stayed on his current path, that he would end up in jail or worse. Unfortunately, as they were driving, the truck caught a flat tire, forcing them to call for help. After Archie shut down Jughead's proposition to call Betty, as he didn't want her involved in such business, they decided to call Kevin, who had a truck of his own. As they were doing so, a man named Farmer McGinty pulled up alongside the road to offer assistance. While the farmer didn't have a spare, he was willing to give one of them a ride to Greendale, but not without pay. Jughead offered up his last $18 in exchange for the ride, however, Archie wasn't so sure that this was a wise decision. Jughead insisted that he had no other choice, then telling Archie that his debt had been paid, and that they were all good. After loading the crate into the farmer's truck, Archie watched from his father truck as Jughead road off with Farmer McGinty.

Jughead, Farmer McGinty and Archie

On their way to Greendale, Jughead and Farmer McGinty stopped at a gas station and then a cafe. In the cafe Farmer McGinty told Jughead a story about the Riverdale Reaper and the family of four that lived out near Fox Forsest, who he murdered in their sleep with a shotgun. While the Reaper was never apprehended, some people say that the lynch mob hung him from the tree near Pickens Park. Others think he hopped a train and went out to California, where he started praying to the Devil. However, there was also a theory that he never left Riverdale, which left Jughead to question if the Reaper and the Black Hood were one and the same. Farmer McGinty merely believed that it was killing season. The waitress then put the check on the table, though the Farmer tried to pass it on to Jughead, who didn't have any money. Farmer McGinty then got up from his seat, and prepared to leave with intentions on taking the crate with him. Fortunately, Archie arrived to pay the bill, during which time, the farmer accused both him and Jughead of being sinners.

Archie and Jughead delivering the crate

Just outside the cafe, after paying for the bill, Archie and Jughead took the crate from the farmer's truck, and loaded it back into his father's truck, where Jughead thanked Archie for coming back for him. Archie reminded Jughead of their agreement to see the deal through. He fully intended on keeping that promise. Despite their efforts to adhere to the advice Penny Peabody by delivering the drugs, and leaving Greendale by Midnight, as it was a town that you didn't want to be in past such hours, Archie and Jughead had no choice. At 11:52 P.M., they got back on the road to deliver the crate as agreed. Upon their arrival at the Greendale warehouse, where they delivered the crate as promised, Archie and Jughead were joined by an older woman in a wheelchair, and the man that was pushing her. They were late, the woman remarked, thought Jughead replied that they had car trouble. As her male companion flashed a gun to frighten them, she told them not to be late next time, but Jughead had no clue what she was referring to as the delivery was a one time job. However, the older woman claimed to have been informed by Penny that the Serpents were taking over for the Ghoulies, and that they were set for regular deliveries, with a regular delivery boy (i.e. Jughead).

Jughead and Archie at Pop's

After making the delivery, Archie and Jughead returned to Riverdale. At Pop's, Jughead thanked Archie once more for his assistance even though doing what they did violated every strand of Archie's DNA, Jughead acknowledged. However, Archie didn't seem too concerned, stating that they'd all done bad things ever since the Black Hood first entered the diner. It was almost as if he was making them do it. Maybe it was just a tale from the dark side, but Jughead had been thinking about the story he heard regarding the Riverdale Reaper, and the possibility of it being an actual lead. He hoped that Archie would join him at the library to research the topic. However, Archie would be busy the following day as he and Reggie were taking Moose to physical therapy, and after that, he would be having dinner with Veronica and her parents. Maybe the day after that, Archie offered. He then further expressed his concern for Jughead, and the hole he was in with the Penny and Serpents. Jughead told Archie that he would try to get himself out, before leaving to visit his father in prison. Shortly after Jughead's departure, Pop Tate announced that he had just gotten off the phone with the Black Hood, who said that they were all sinners that failed his test, and that the reckoning was upon them.[14]

Betty and Jughead informing Archie and Veronica of his father's release

In the Blue and Gold offices, Jughead and Betty informed Archie and Veronica of the recent development in his father's case, which involved his father's release. What heralded this miracle, Veronica wondered. Jugead claimed it was due to a combination of overcrowding at the jail and Cheryl's testimony, which the Judge must've reviewed. However, both he and Archie knew the true reason for his father's release was because of the drug-run they made into Greendale for Penny Peabody, during which time they discovered that Penny had set Jughead up to be her permanent drug-runner. With a new lead on the Black Hood case, Jughead and Betty were hoping that Archie and Veronica could follow up on it, as Jughead would be busy helping his father readjust. Essentially, they wanted Archie and Veronica to be them, in the sense that they would be investigating the case as a investigative team.

Archie and Veronica informing Jughead and Betty of the third Conway child

A some time had passed since they spoke last, and in a reversal of roles, Jughead and Betty were called down to the Blue and Gold offices by Archie and Veronica, who had gone to the house of the Reaper's murder, and discovered from the Sheriff's case files that there was a third child of the Conway family, Joseph Conway. He survived the massacre. His name was changed and his identity was hidden so that he could lead a normal life. According to Sheriff Howard's notes, he was adopted by another family in Riverdale, and presumably enrolled at a local high school. Fortunately, they had a photo of Joseph, meaning that all they had to do was match the photo to one of the students at Riverdale High School during the years he would've attended. If they found him, then he could possibly tell them how the Conway massacre was related to the recent killings. Jughead speculated that finding Joseph Conway wasn't the best idea since he could be the Black Hood. Considering that Joseph possibly saw the slaughter of his family, that type of brutality and viciousness could've traumatized him, which he might even blame Riverdale for, and is punishing the town because of it. Jughead and Betty then invited Archie and Veronica to his father's retirement party.

That night, after sweeping the perimeter, Jughead entered the Wyrm for his father's party, where he found Archie sitting near the bar. Archie told Jughead that he was waiting for Veronica to arrive, as he was looking to clear the air between them. Tonight's going to be a good night, Archie said. Here's hoping, Jughead replied, before walking off.

Later on in the night, Jughead watched from the crowd as Archie performed on stage with Veronica. Although, their performance was cut short after Veronica ran off the stage in tears.[15]

Archie and Jughead discussing Christmas plans

As Jughead worked on his novel from Pop's, Archie and Mr. Andrews entered the diner with the Christmas tree that Pop Tate had ordered. After setting it up, Archie joined Jughed in his booth, where the two of them discussed Holiday plans. Despite initial plans to visit his mother in Chicago, Archie and his father were staying in town for Christmas, as his mother had booked a singles cruise. When Jughead asked about his current relationship troubles with Veronica, Archie told him that they weren't in the best place. If it was any conciliation, Jughead and Betty weren't on the greatest of terms either. Mr. Andrews then asked Jughead if he and his father wanted a Christmas tree, free of charge. Jughead accepted his offer, though it would have to be a small tree given that they lived in a trailer. Archie then left, but not before making sure that Jughead would also be attending Kevin's secret Santa gathering.

Secret Santa

Though they did not speak, in the days leading up to Christmas, both Archie and Jughead attended Kevin's Secret Santa gift exchange in the student lounge at Riverdale High School. While it remains unknown whose name Jughead picked or who picked his name, he watched with a potential look of concern as Betty opened her gift from Archie, which was an old read-a-long record that she and Archie used to listen to when they were five years old, entitled "The Swiss Family Robinson". She loved the present, thanking Archie for such a wonderful gift. Moose and Midge then entered the lounge to join them for the Holiday event.

Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and, Archie talking about the Black Hood

Jughead met with Archie, Betty, and Veronica in a booth at Pop's after Sheriff Keller killed the Black Hood, and they discovered that the man behind the hood was Mr. Svenson, Riverdale High's janitor. The four of them discussed how Veronica's instincts about Svenson were correct. She thought he was the Black Hood, and had Archie listened when they confronted him at school, they could've end everything. But after looking directly into the killer's eyes the day that his father was shot, Archie didn't see the resemblance in Svenson's eyes. Taking a moment to forget about his eyes, they couldn't believe that he would cut off his own finger. The finger of accusation, Betty pointed out. "So we know whodunit. Why did he do it?", Jughead asked. Svenson accused an innocent man of being the Riverdale Reaper and murdering his family, which got the man killed. Maybe, in some twisted way, Svenson thought that targeting sinners would balance his sin, Betty explained. Him having such vast knowledge on their lives made perfect sense given that Svenson was always around, lurking in the hallways. He could have seen Archie and Ms. Grundy in the music room, as well as Moose and Midge buying Jingle Jangle. While they continued to go over the killer's motives, Jughead was just grateful that Svenson was in a body bag and they weren't.[16]

Archie propsing a truce between the Northside and Southside

After learning that Southside High was closing down and that some of its students were being transferred to Riverdale High School, including Jughead, Archie joined Veronica in welcoming the transfers (Jughead, Toni, Sweet Pea and Fangs Fogarty, amongst others). To ease their transition to the Northside, Veronica had set up a registration desk in the hallway for locker assignments, class schedules, and a list of sports and extracurriculars. Cheryl and Reggie then interrupted. With the River Vixens and Riverdale Bulldogs in tow, Cheryl approached the registration desk, hurling insults their way, referring to them as "Southside scum" and "raggamuffins". Cheryl refused to allow Riverdale High's above average GPA to suffer because of overcrowded classrooms with underachievers such as themselves. So she instructed them to find another school to deface. In doing this, she upset Toni. Just as the two were about to face off, Archie stepped in the middle of them, hoping to put their Northside and Southside differences aside to start over but the rivaling sides continued to go back and forth until Mr. Weatherbee arrived to send them off to class.[17]

Jughead and Thomas at Pickens Day

At Pickens Park, Archie watched from the crowd as Jughead, Toni, Sweet Pea, Fangs Fogarty and the Southside Serpents protested Pickens Day. Jughead stood next to Thomas Topaz as Toni, who seemingly led the charge, stood in front of the stage with Sweet Pea and Fogarty to announce that they represented the dead and the silenced. Pickens Day was a lie. General Pickens slaughtered the Uktena tribe, Toni's grandfather's family. And the land in which they were standing on, would soon give way to a new Southside, which was stolen from them. While the Serpents couldn't bring them back, they could at the very least honor them. Hoping to calm the crowd, Mr. Lodge got on stage to applaud the Serpents for standing up for justice, as well as the honor and legacy of the Uktena, who contribute to the rich tapestry that is Riverdale, that is the Southside and that will be SoDale.[18]

Jughead observed from the front counter at Pop's as Archie retrieved Mr. Lodge's order in what he described as being a classic trope of Mob movies. A rich, high-rolling, gangster taking a small town kid under his wing.

Kevin, Archie, Betty and Jughead at Veronica's ceremony

In the student lounge, having already invited Archie, Veronica invited Jughead, Betty and Kevin to her confirmation ceremony. Usually those kinds of events were family only, but since they were her chosen family, she managed to pull a few strings and reserve them a pew. Later that week, Jughead attended Veronica's confirmation. He sat alongside Betty, Kevin and Archie as Veronica was confirmed.[19]

In the student lounge at school, Jughead, Archie, Betty and Veronica learned from Kevin that the police had found a dead body that morning, leaving Jughead to wonder if the Black Hood had risen from the grave. While the investigation was ongoing, it was supposedly a gruesome, gangland style execution at the motel.[20]

Archie and Jughead's relationship began to crumble. At Pop's, Jughead accused Archie of siding with Hiram over Fred. However, Jughead is in the dark about Archie's blood oath with Hiram. Jughead wanted to set up a protest so that Hiram Lodge would not demolish Southside High. Archie, was forced to stop the protest in exchange for Hiram letting his father out of the SoDale deal. Archie cut off the chains that Jughead and the Serpents had on.[21]

Quotes

Archie: "I'm sorry."
Jughead: "It's cool... We're not gonna hug in front of this whole town. [laughs] So why don't we both just do that bro thing where we nod like douches and mutually suppress our emotions?"
Archie: "Yeah, but as friends, right?"
Jughead: "To be discussed, over many burgers, and many days."
―Archie and Jughead rekindling their friendship[src]
